in northwestern Hidalgo Co. Texas, in the San Jose Land Grant awarded to Jose Alejandro Farias by Mexico in 1829. In 1898, Arcadio Guertra (1864-) and his brother-in-law Jose Cayetano Barrera (1846-1930)bought adjacent land there. Cayetano was 28 yrs. Old when he married 17-year

old Crisanta Guerra (1857-1944), daughter of Manuel & Antonia Guerra. In 1883, Cayetano a carpenter by trade, had moved his family from Mier

to Los Braziles in Brooks Co. Texas, where he built a home across the creek from his mother-in-law. By 1895, when he took title to 430 acres, the couple had 12 children; two more were born at La Reforma (14 total). After 15 yrs. The Barrera’s and Guerra’s families sold their land to Ed C.

Lasater, founder of modern Falfurrias and they moved back to Rio Grande Valley. Cayetano bought 3,089 acres in the northwest Hidalgo Co. and

his brother-in-law Arcadio Guerra bouth adjacent land. Arcadio Guerra ‘s mother is Dona Antonia Guerra who in 1875 she purchased ranch land as well. The Ranch La Reforma or Reformation was used to raise cattle, there was a ranch school and Arcadio owned a general merchandise store

near Falfurrias. In 1920 Cayetano Sr. moved his family to Mission. As the children married they founded businesses and one son went into medical practice there. Sons Exiquir established a store and Jose a garage which developed into Barrera Supply Co. Dr. Cayetano E. Barrera opened the first medical clinic in Mission & the Barrera Drug Store. (there is a grandson who also is named Cayetano who is a doctor) Jose founded Barrera

Nurseries in McAllen & 3 sisters also owned nurseries. Most of the land Cayetano Sr. bought at La Reforma is still owned by the Barrera family

where they raise cattle & feed. Oil and gas has been found on the land.]

Gertrudis died, her son & sole heir Gregorio suited his father for his mother’s portion of the inheritance because his father had

remarried he felt he would lose his inheritance] [Provincial Governor under the Spanish crown of the territory lying between the

Nueces & Rio Grande rivers and had charge of all the Indian tribes in his province. Originally sailed from Catalonia Spain to the

new world and settled in Mexico. He was killed by mistake by a band of Indian warriors under the chief Castro in 1832 or 1833

at the Alamo ranch in Texas. Don Gregorio Vela settled on two leagues in the Santa Teresa grant, north of the Rio Grande. He

was returning from one of the ranches (Beteno) and on his way to Mier to attend to important business matters when he was

killed. Three of his daughters who accompanied him were captured by the Indians. One was ransomed in San Antonio, another

escaped from them about 6 miles from the Rio Grande and made her way to friends and the 3rd

Paulita was never heard from

although an uncle searched for her among the Indians for 15 to 20 years. ]

age of 25 he became the master of the steamboat Champion on which he traversed the Apalachicola & Chattahoochee Rivers

in Florida. He came to Texas in 1846 to serve as a steamboat captain with the U. S. Army during the War with Mexico.

Captain Kenedy ferried troops & supplies up and down the Rio Grande. When hostilities ceased in 1848 he recognized the

opportunity on the new frontier & decided to stay. He had a company, M. Kenedy & Company which dominated steamboat

trade on the Rio Grande. Kenedy married Petra Vela de Vidal who was a young widow of a Mexican Soldier. In 1869 the

Kenedy family moved from Brownsville & established the Laureles Ranch in Nueces County, which consisted of 172,000

fenced acres. It was a large working ranch that included more than 20 families. He was a wealthy man. The ranch was sold

to the Texas Land & Cattle Company due to Petra becoming ill. The Kenedy family established the Kenedy Pasture Company

in Cameron Co. with headquarters a La Parra Ranch. Petra & Mifflin settled in Corpus Christi in an Italian villa-style home.

When Mifflin Kenedy died in 1895 he did not leave a will. His only serving son John Gregory “Know as Don Gregorio”

bought out the other heirs’ interest in the vast Kenedy ranch, La Parra. He and his wife Marie Stella raised their two

children in the Big House.][The town of Kenedy, Texas and Kenedy County are named after Mifflin Kenedy and his best

friend and business partner was Richard King, owner of the famous King Ranch who he financially bailed out several times]
