INVESTITURE CEREMONY STUDENT COUNCIL

2016-17

First address by SAATHWIK THIMMAIH, PRESIDENT - STUDENT COUNCIL 2016-17

Good morning parents, teachers and my fellow students!

I cannot tell you how happy I am to be here today. After all, it is not every day that you get sworn in as President

of The Student Council.

Today, I start my term as President. But, that would not have been possible without your support. I am truly

thankful to all my fellow students for having faith in me. Even though you have known me for a very short while,

you have placed your trust in me. You have my word that I will never let you down.

To borrow from the words of Henry Ford, “Coming together (to vote for me and my team) is a beginning; keeping

together is progress; working together is success”. I hope all the students and teachers will work together with my

newly elected team, to ensure the continued success and growth of our respected school.

I thank all the parents, who took the time out of their busy schedule to come and witness this event. It is you who

moulded us into what we are today, and without you we would be nothing.

My heartfelt gratitude to all the teachers our second parents for making this event and everything else possible. My

special thanks to our teachers Mr Jagadeesh Madathanil and Ms Meera Rangarajan who managed the electoral

process and our Vice principal & IBDPand Ms Kinnari Shah for her constant support and encouragement to all the

contesting candidates.

A big thank you to all those unseen teachers and students who were quietly working in the background all set to

ensure the success of this important exercise.

I will not forget our administrative and support staff under the guidance of Mr Satish who ensured the necessary

materials and facilities were provided and in good order throughout the election period and even today. And above

all else, my thanks to The Almighty, as we would not even exist without God.

Thank you and have a nice day!

Every day I learn more…..

Research suggests that students retain a great deal of factual information from field trips.

With this in mind, on 30th August 2016, Nursery students visited the Nahar Medical Centre at Powai

as a part of their current UOI ‘Me’, included under the theme ‘Who we are’. This was Nursery’s first field

trip ever at RBKIA, and the students were really excited about it. The day before, when the teachers told them

they would be visiting a clinic to talk with a doctor, they glowed with enthusiasm and anticipation and could not

stop talking about the trip.

The students really enjoyed the bus ride to the clinic, curious about the scenery, the buildings, and the people they

saw in the streets, showing that everything is a learning experience.

The primary purpose of this field trip was to provide an opportunity for the students to learn more about health

and hygiene. The students met Dr. Gamy, who interacted with them and also showed them the equipment she

used. They enjoyed the trip and when they came back to school, they were able to reflect on what they had seen.

This was certainly a great learning experience for our little ones!

Painting the town red……

The preprimary section of RBKIA celebrated ‘Red Day’ on 26th August 2016. Students brought red objects and spoke about them with their peers. The little ones enjoyed the day thoroughly seeing red colour around them.

A session with CRY NGO

On 23rd August, 2016 the students of Grade 5 had a

session on ‘Child Labor & Child Rights’.

It was conducted by Ms. Abha Duggal who is a senior

manager at CRY NGO. She briefed students about

the rights of children, emphasizing the fact that all

children are born with fundamental rights.

It was an enlightening session, as she shared her real

life experience and told the students the importance

of child rights. She also showed two videos about child

rights to explain to students that it’s not just one thing

that stands in the way of child rights, it's many. The

students learnt about aspects such as issues of child

labor, causes of child labor, and the importance of

child rights. It was a learning and interactive meeting

for the students as she answered all the queries put up

by the students to their full satisfaction.

Students Reflections:

On 23rd August,Ms. Abha Duggal , a senior manager from CRY organization came to our school to talk about child

rights. She explained to us about the different fundamental child rights. She also showed us some informative

videos. It was fun! I asked lot of questions to her and she answered all my queries. This was a very informative

session!

- Srushti Linge ------ 5A

Ms. Abha from CRY NGO came to our school to talk about different issues children are facing worldwide. She was

very friendly with us. She also explained to us how her NGO works to rescue child laborers and how it helps them.

She also showed us two videos that I found very interesting. Each one of us was asking her a lot of questions, and

she patiently answered all of them. I enjoyed the session as it was very informative!

- Neil Vaswani------ 5 A

When I heard about the guest speaker who was coming to talk to us from CRY NGO, I remembered my mother used

to work for CRY, and on the way back home I told her about the guest speaker. She asked me if it was Ms. Abha

Duggal. I said yes. I learnt a lot about child rights and how they identify the children’s age by running a bone density

test when their team rescues child laborers.

A session with CRY NGO

We had a guest speaker coming to us from CRY. She taught us the importance of learning

about CRY, and from that we gained a lot of knowledge. We also learnt what are the hazardous

places like dump yards and many other things like the number of people that have been rescued.

We asked many questions too, like which was the first NGO established, and how do you get to know a child’s

proper age? It was fun! I hope we have more and more guest speaker coming to visit us.

— Aalisha 5 B

I had a lot of fun yesterday; Ms. Abha gave us all lots of information. She has worked with Mr.Kailash Sathyarthi for 8

years and with CRY for more than 11 years. She explained us about child rights and donation. I did not know that

brands like H&M and GAP indulged into child labor. CRY rescued more than 80, 000 children.

— Rishabh 5 B

I gained a lot of knowledge from the CRY NGO. Our guest speaker’s name was Ms. Abha. She showed us a video on

child rights. She is one of the members of CRY NGO. She worked with Mr. Kailash Sathyarthi and CRY has handled

almost 200 projects so far.

MUN BRIEFING GOES A LONG WAY

On 26 Aug 2016, Mr Kevin, a member of the MUN Cafe, visited our school and briefed

us on the MUN conference this year. He talked about how MUN was an important experience not

only to add to your achievements but also to go out and interact with people from different walks of life.

He started off by telling us what MUN is and how conferences are held, this was important for any new

students that were interested in participating. He seemed to make it clear that MUN was not only about going to a

foreign country and sightseeing, but was about getting out of your shell and seeing problems from other’s the point

of view of other countries. Overall, MUN is a very unique opportunity and I recommend participating in it.

- TANAY SHENOY

GRADE 9

Mr Kevin talked to Grades 9-12 about MUN. It was an interesting interactive session in the auditorium as he

explained to us about why we should make MUN a part of our life. He also told us about how it would help us

improve our confidence level and how it could help us when we go overseas for our further studies. As he worked

for “MUN cafe” he explained to us about Harvard MUN in Boston. Previously I always thought that MUN was a

waste of time, but after this session, I surely will attend MUN conferences.

Each One Teach One: School initiated service

As IB students, we are required to serve the community as a part of our learning process. Our school has worked very hard to achieve this. So, every MYP class is given a dedicated period when we have to serve the community. The "Each One Teach One" idea, I thought was an excellent topic and there we're many ways in which we could implement it. It is a take-off on our Prime Minister Narendra Modi's dream, that one day, the entire Indian population will be literate. So, Grade 8 decided to make the housekeeping staff of our school computer literate on 2 September 2016.

Though this seemed like a brilliant idea, most of us had doubts as to whether we would be able to pull such a feat off. I mean, kids teaching adults is not something that happens every day. Would they understand us? Would they actually learn something? Would we be good teachers? These were some questions that we went on in my mind.

Nevertheless, we were very excited about the fact that we could pass on our knowledge to someone else, be it kid or adult.

When the day finally came, we were all very enthusiastic. We thoroughly enjoyed teaching them. They were all very cooperative and they made it much easier for us! Most of them had never used a computer before, so it was a treat to watch the excitement on their faces. We helped them create their own e-mail accounts. Then, we told them to log in themselves and they were all successful. This was a great and enriching experience.

Being an IB student, this was an amazing way to serve the

people around us. This activity reflected fairness and

development. How we help the community to develop, and

how along the way, we can grow too was proved right by this

activity. We learnt to be caring and effective communicators,

because we had to effectively communicate with the staff and

show them the knowledge that we had about computers. This

was a very fulfilling experience and I'm looking forward to all

the other sessions in the future!

Each One Teach One: School initiated service

In school we engaged in a community and service activity on 2nd September, 2016. Our class had to teach 21 housekeeping staff members of our school how to create a Gmail account under the "Each One Teach One" programme. As a student, I had doubts about the success of the activity. I wondered whether it would be easy teaching an adult, whether they would look forward it. Also, would they be open enough to learn something new, and if I would be able to be a good teacher, patient enough to teach an adult properly.

But I was wrong, it was a huge hit. All of us rocked and made sure that we helped the housekeeping. The housekeeping staff members were enjoying and quite enthusiastic and were even looking forward to learning more about their account. All of us were great teachers and the staff was also great. I would really appreciate teaching new things to the house keeping staff. We are committed to the global context fairness and development as we helped the community around us develop and in the process we even achieved the learning profile caring by being patient while teaching them. This experience was unique and quite fulfilling for me and I am eagerly looking forward for the next session. SHREE SENGHANI GRADE 8

IBDP French Language Students Sample French Cuisine in Mumbai

They say that the best way to learn is through experience. consequently, the IBDP French students were taken to a

French café for a field trip, for cultural immersion in order to polish their French. The venue was the Suzette creperie and

café which is located in Powai. We left school at 11:15 a.m. and walked into the eatery at around 11:55am. The café had a

very pleasant ambience and looked fresh, warm and homely. The proprietor enlightened us about how it all started five years

ago and about the dishes it specializes in. He spoke in French to enable us to get a feel of the French accent. Without wasting

any time and hungry with anticipation, we ordered food. They must believe in the saying ‘hunger is the best sauce’ because

they really made us wait for it. But the food was worth it! All the ingredients were fresh- the lettuce was crispy, the tomatoes

juicy, the bread spongy and the cheese melted in the mouth. All the ingredients were combined in the perfect blend to make

dishes that were as splendid as they were filling. But the cherry on top was the bonding experience that school trips always

offer. Dining and travelling together are one of the few things that can truly bring people closer; and travelling back with your

friends while listening to music after having hearty meal is, by me, one of the best feelings ever.

DP Students host Teachers’ Day Party

Friday 2nd September, 2016

Every year, teachers’ day is celebrated on 5th of September, but as the Ganpati festival is coming up and the school is closing tomorrow (i.e. 3rd of September), Grades 11 and 12 thought of an innovative idea to surprise our hard working and dedicated teachers. We decided to throw them a party. The event was conducted in the auditorium. All the MYP/DP teachers were invited to the function. Kanishk Arora & Sheila Lumumba (IBDP-2) were the hosts of the show and they performed with great enthusiasm. Later there was an entertaining dance performance by students of IB diploma 2. Games like musical chairs and pop-the-balloon relay were played and the scene was absolutely hilarious. The event ended with a humorous but yet emotional speech dedicated to teachers who as our second parents mostly ignore our mischief because deep down we know that they love us too! A sumptuous brunch was organised for the teachers and we shared a delicious white forest cherry cake which had been specially baked for the occasion by Arnav Sachdev’s mother. During the brunch the teachers had a surprise in store for them! The souvenirs were fruit-painted jute bags which were done by IBDP 1 students and packed with intricate bow detailing done by me. I quipped, “We aren’t really artistic students, but we did really put in a lot of effort into this” Ms Sunitha responded by saying, “It’s the gesture that matters”. This instantly brought a smile to my face and made my day! I am really glad we, being part of grade 11 got such an opportunity to arrange an event like this, and as the Cultural Activity Leader, I would like to organise more events like this in the near future.
