Derrick the Dentist and the Mighty Giantp. 4

BRAMBABANG! The sound was very loud. It was so loud thatpeople had to c_______ their ears. But their eyes were _______ _______.

They could see the _______________ all around them. Wooden buildingswere _______________ into pieces. Fire burned through the farmer'sbarn. A thick cloud of black smoke ________ _____ over the village.

"AAARRGH!"There was a loud __________ as a huge shape came into view. The

_________________ giant had returned.

Terrified women ran through the streets holding their children.Men hid behind _____________ shelter they could find. But it was no use."AARRRGH!" The giant roared as he ______________ the buildings

aside like tiny toys.

p. 7"Aaaah! Someone save us!" cried the villagers, as they ran this

way and that, trying to escape.Then suddenly, the giant turned around slowly and __________

________ into the woods. The attack was over quickly.The villagers looked around at all the _____________ the giant hadleft behind.

p. 8That evening the villagers met to talk about the problem they

had with the giant. They had to _______ ___ ________ to stop his attackson the village.

"We must do something," shouted the mayor. He was standing

on a table so that everyone could see him. "For months now, the gianthas been _____________ our village. It takes weeks to ______ the damage,then the giant just comes back to ___________ everything again. He'salways in such a ________, but what does he want? He never takesanything. Is he hungry?"

p. 10"We could try and ask him?" said the baker. "If he's hungry, I can

make a giant loaf of bread. That will fix him!"

"Yes, let's _______ _____ what he wants," the farmer agreed. "Ifhe's hungry, I have plenty of food on my farm."

"But he never takes any food when he comes here," said the farmer'swife. "He could _________ take all our food if he wanted. He just roarsand ____________ everything, then leaves.

Chapter 2, p. 12The mayor listened to everyone arguing.

"Enough!" he shouted. "There's only one thing we can do. We mustfight and kill the giant, or we will never have peace in our village."

Everyone was quiet.Then the tailor finally spoke up. "Kill him?" said the tailor. "But we'renot warriors. Not a __________ ______ here knows how to fight, and notone of us knows how to kill a d_______________ giant."

p. 13"Only we can save our village," the mayor told everyone. "We'll

put all our names in a box and _________ one name. That's the _________want to choose who will face the giant."

All the men put their names into a box. Then the mayor asked alittle girl to pick one name from the box.

"Derrick the dentist!" ______________ the girl."Who?" asked the butcher. He could not believe what he had heard."Derrick the dentist?"

Everyone stared in _____________. Although very experienced withpeople's teeth, the village dentist was a small, thin man. There was noway he could fight the dangerous giant.

Some people in the room began to laugh as the mayor called thedentist forward.

"You have been chosen to save our village from the dangerous

giant," the mayor announced. "Tomorrow the blacksmith willprepare your armor and sword. You are our _______________, Derrick

p. 16The following morning at the blacksmith's shop, the dentist

looked a ________ sight. The armor was far too big for him. It __________every time he moved. When he was handed the sword, the littledentist was pulled to the ground by its weight. The villagers laughedloudly.

p. 17Derrick the dentist tried to be brave. He knew he had to try his

best to save his village."Don't take the armor off," warned the blacksmith. "It will

protect you from the giant.""If you take the armor off, the giant will __________ you like a littlebug," teased the butcher.The villagers laughed again.

p. 18Yet no one laughed as the dentist slowly rode the brown horse downthe main street to go and meet the dangerous giant.Everyone knew that the little mans chances of returning were very

___________ indeed.They waved a sad goodbye to their fellow villager.Good luck, shouted the butcher.

p. 20 Chapter 3Derrick the dentist reached the northern woods after a few days ride.The forest was dark.Derrick looked for clues so that he could find his way to the giantscave. He saw huge footprints along the winding path. He took a deep

_________ before continuing on his dangerous journey.As he got closer to the land of the giant, Derrick saw broken trees_____________ across the forest floor.The looked like giant toothpicks.Suddenly, Derrick heard a loud groan.He knew he was getting closer and closer to the giants cave.

p. 23Clang! Clang! The dentists armor was very noisy as he climbed off hishorse.Derrick stood still for a moment. He didnt want to make too much

noise in case the giant heard him.Derrick looked through the bushes and saw the mighty giant. He wassitting on a rock outside his cave.The giant was _____________ his head on his hand.He looked very sad.To Derrick, the giant didnt look very dangerous at all.Oh well, thought Derrick, he looks ______________. Maybe Ill just gohome, and he turned to leave.

p. 24CLANG! KACLANG! CLANG! Derricks armor was noisy again as hebegan walking back to his horse.He had to be as quiet as possible not to disturb the giant. But it wastoo late.Whos there? roared the giant, in a loud, ___________________ voice.Who dares enter my land?The little dentist stepped out from behind the bushes.

I am the chosen _______________ of t he village, he cried.I _________________you to fight to the death.

p. 26The dentist pulled out his sword, but he immediately fell to the floor.Wearing the armor and with the big heavy sword on top of him, thesmall thin man couldnt get up quic kly.He soon ______________ and fell again.

p. 27On the third try, the dentist _______________ to stand.T______________ from head to toe, he held up the heavy sword as high ashe could.The heavy sword made Derrick shake inside his armor, creating a______________ sound.The giant burst out laughing. Hahahah! They sent you to kill me? he

shouted.A find joke, Im sure. But little man, the joke is on you.

The giant stepped forward and raised his fists, preparing to crush thedentist like an insect.

Chapter 4

p. 29Poor Derrick the dentist was frozen with fear. He couldnt run awaybecause of the heavy armor.The giant stepped forward waving his fists. He was surely going tocrush the little dentist.Derrick hoped the armor would protect him from being squished likea bug.Suddenly, the giant stopped his attack.He turned away, clutching his jaw in pain. The giant stomped over to

a tree and _________________ it in half.He took one end of the tree and stuck it in his mouth like a toothpick.The dentist looked around at the other fallen trees.The all looked like giant toothpicks.Derrick then _________________ that the giant had a ________________. Agiant toothache!

p. 31It was clear that the giant was in pain.

And the toothache ________________ why the giant never took anythingwhen he attacked the village. He just ______________ things up becausehe was in so much pain.Thats a pretty bad ______________that you have, said De rrick thedentist.Toothache? cried the giant. Theres something _________ in mytooth. He sat there chewing on the tree-sized toothpick.It looks like a classic case of toothache to me.

Maybe I can help? asked Derrick.

p. 32Never! roared the giant.You are too small. And what do you know about teeth anyway? Oh, I know a lot about teeth, said the dentist.Ive treated peoples toothaches for years in my village. I know your toothache is a lot bigger, but the problem is much the

same.

Derrick had to ________________the giant that he wasnt trying to trickhim, so the dentist put down his sword.Then derrick took off his helmet, too.He was very happy to put down the huge sword and even happier to

take off the heavy, _______________ helmet.The giant let out a half-hearted roar, but remained still.

p. 34The dentist climbed onto a rock and told the giant to pen his mouth.The giants bad ______________ almost made the dentist faint.The dentist looked into the giants mouth and found the problem.Just as I thought! the dentist said.Now, come along.

Ill need my tools for a job this size.You have to come back to my office in the village.

p. 37As the dentist and the giant approached the village, they were met bya crowd of _____________ villagers.At first, they thought the giant was coming to attack the village again.Maybe the giant was mad that they had tried to send someone to killhim.

There was no way to ______________ the giant this time.Run for your lives, cried the baker. The giant has come back to attack us!

p. 38But the dentist soon ______________ everyone.The giant isnt going to harm us. He just needs help, explained thedentist.Help? Why? asked the mayor.

p. 40"Good luck! shouted the butcher. Everyone knew that before a toothache could be fixed, there wouldbe even greater pain.

How would they control the d______________ giant as the dentist tried topull out the bad tooth?Surely there would be even more d_______________ in the village!

But the giant wasnt attacking. Im tired of this pain, moaned the giant, holding onto his aching jaw. Ill do anything if you can stop the pain for me. The mayor listened carefully and then spoke to the giant.

Okay, he said, but you must _______________ never to attack ourvillage again.The giant promised, nodding his huge head.

p. 43And so all the villagers helped the brave dentist prepare the giant forthe _____________ work.The dentist had all his usual tools, but they were too small to fix agiants tooth. So he decided to use the big sword instead.

The tailor helped the dentist hold the sword in place. They bot had toclimb up onto the giants chin.

Luckily, they wore ________ _________ to protect themselves from thegiants bad breath. Then the tailor tied a rope around the bad tooth.The farmer brought two of his strongest horses to pull the rope.The horses pulled and pulled until the huge bad tooth came____________out of the giants mouth. That evening, the baker made some soft bread, and the farmer and

his wife made a huge pot of hot vegetable soup for the giant to eat.

p. 44And t_________ to his word, the giant never attacked the village again.He helped fix the d____________ he had caused in the past.

From that day on, the giant became the dentists biggestpatient. The dentist even asked the carpenter to make a hugetoothbrush so that the giant could keep his teeth healthy. There werecheers and c_______________ all across the village. Everyone was very
