    DER>>NSW Professional Learning Ideas 2010 School Development Days 1 | P a g e

Below are some ideas that may help to support Professional learning in School

Development Days over the end of 2010 and beginning of 2011 period.

    1. Digital Citizenship

Prior to the school development day a school team completes a scope and sequence for implementation

    across the KLAs

    a) What is the Digital Citizenship resource? In small cross faculty teams work through the Digital Citizenshipresource package. Set up a collaborative

document (eg titan pad) to centrally share ideas and reflections as the teams work through the course.

    b) How can we use the Digital Citizenship resource in our faculty? In faculty teams review your scope and sequence to identify a series of lessons or program area into

which each relevant dimension can be integrated and modify lesson plans and/or program area. Use the

lessons in the resource to support your planning.

    c) How can I use the Digital Citizenship resource in my classroom? From the mapping exercise, in pairs, target a lesson/series of lessons and integrate elements of digitalcitizenship.

    2. Technology Integration

    a) How well do I integrate technology?Work through the CLAS (Connected Learning Advisory Service) MyMap Tool to review your progress

since the last time that you completed it or you can complete the assessment for the first time.

    b) What will I do to improve Technology Integration?Use the information from this assessment to begin an Action Learning Plan / Individual Learning Plan.

Consider the support that you will need and map out the most useful strategies to assist you with your

    learning.

    c) How can I improve my skills to support my Technology Integration Action Plan?Refer back to your Individual Learning Plan, use resources from TaLE (Tools 4U and Ucreate) to

undertake your professional learning. As you complete these activities consider what adjustments you

can make in your teaching and learning.

    4. Shifting from the traditional assessment of a unit of work to a 21st

    Century model

Create a MindMap:Work in pairs or small faculty groups to create a Mind Map (use FreeMind on the DER Laptops, or Creately

online) that you will use to complete this activity. Once you have completed this mind map, share it with

colleagues from another faculty. Then use it as a framework to construct your assessment task.

Define the assessment task:Take a major unit of work that covers a significant area of your curriculum (make this the centre of your mind

map). Break the task into components (i.e research, tasks, decision making, analysis, publishing, reflection)and create a break out bubble for each.

    DER>>NSW Professional Learning Ideas 2010 School Development Days 2 | P a g e

Explore how the student can demonstrate their learning:For each component of the task identify a range of digital & non digital alternatives students can use to

provide evidence of their learning. Consider 4 or 5 alternatives to offer students. A good starting point is the

UCreate Series (in TaLe) and this list of WebTools.

Consider the means by which you will assess student achievement:a) What assessment guidelines will you provide?b) Build these guidelines by looking through sites such as: iRubric, Rubistar, Shrock Guide Rubrics

and TaLE Assessment with Laptops sites

    c) By what means will students submit their work and demonstrate their reflection on theirlearning?

    d) How will students submit this task (USB, Email or Edmodo)?e) How will you provide feedback (digital markup, mp3 audio notes, etc)? How will students

indicate to you their reflection on their learning and goals for improvement?

    5. Restock the Toolbox: a series of short workshops for the faculty or

    school teams

Every school has staff members who are able to mentor or coach for technology integration. Using these staff

members is an excellent means for developing a collaborative learning environment.

Some ideas for short workshops include:a) Choose one of the topics below and spend time sharing tools. This time should not be used as a

traditional presentation, use the time to walk through sites and tools, discuss pedagogy integration

and embed the tools into programming.

    b) Cross faculty groups, assign tools to each group, take 20 minutes to learn a tool go back tofaculties and share this knowledge and discuss implementation in existing programs.

    c) Circle of Sharing: Staff sit in 2 concentric circles facing a partner. In 2 minutes they share a tool thatthey have in their technology toolbox. After each 2 minute exchange, stop and have staff move

around in opposite circle directions and keep repeating the process as many times as you or they

    like.

    d) Online Hot Potato: create an online corkboard usingwallwisher, lino-it, stixyor titan padfor thetopics below. Split into small groups. In 5 minutes each group lists as many tools as they know thatcan be used for each topic. Rotate groups and repeat. Continue until all groups have filled in tools

on all online corkboards. NB: no tool can be listed twice

Suggested Topics: Tools for planning Tools for organising Tools for learning Tools for assessing Tools for sharing

    Tools for collaboration

2011-12 School Development Day DERNSW Professional Learning Ideas 1

School Development Day Professional Learning Ideas, 2011

This document will give some suggestions for Professional learning activities both on School Development Days and

for regular staff professional learning opportunities held during the school year.

Building Collaborative Teams using the Final Word Protocol for digital pedagogy discussions

    1. Form cross-KLA groups of 4 to 52. Read the selected passage (link here to a really thought provoking passage on technology and pedagogy

    a. Fullan: Learning is the Work:http://bit.ly/fullanworkb. Extract from Why Peer Coaching?http://bit.ly/PCoverview

    3. Follow the instructions as outlined in the Final Word protocolhttp://bit.ly/finalwordwhich can be run off forthe workshop or accessed if all teachers come with their laptops.

    4. Once everyone has had their turn using this protocol, the group could debrief on the effectiveness of thisprotocol in surfacing deep thinking on ICT and teaching and learning; the group could also consider the ways

in which a coaching model might enhance their professional learning and make one or morerecommendations as to how the school could move forward here.

    5. Bring your reflections back to the whole staff as a report.Allow 40-50 minutes for activity and 10 minutes for report with Q&A

Leading change to strengthen digital learning opportunities

This workshop will use the documents in this PDF portfolio:http://bit.ly/leadingdigitalchange Form groups (6 to 10) Using the Digital Education, Making Change Happen document:

o Review the summaries of the first three elements in Digital Education, Making Change HappenDocument

o Divide group into 3 and assign each group one of the three elements listed below: Element 1: Personalising and extending student learning Element 2: Enabling leadership Element 3: Supporting professional learning

Each smaller group should prepare a report or reflection for the whole group on the element they have beenassigned.

Report back to group the above reflection (10 minutes) As a Whole group:

o You will need to appoint a facilitator from your group or a group leader to work through the actions.o Actions

Complete the survey on the Individual reflection sheetto determine where you feelyou/your school is at. This document can be located in the PDF Portfolio linked above

Identify the gaps in your school digital pedagogy plan What actions/strategies could be put in place to move the school forward to

accomplished/leading status? Use the column provided in the reflection sheet to complete

    this activity

Prepare a report with recommendations and actions to be shared with the whole staff.

Allow about an hour and a half for this activity
