Dermapen November 20193

From the Honorary General Secretary’s deskDear members,

In the past one year, IADVL Karnataka has initiated quite a few unique activities for the benefit of the members and also for the benefit of general public.

Encouraged by the success of ‘Vitiligo Ratha’ in the previous two

years, we have gone a step further and bought an LED Roadshow vehicle. This will be called ‘Charmaratha’ and will travel across the state all through the year. I thank Dr Shashikumar, Dr Jagadish and Dr Manjunath Hulmani for successfully implementing this program. I request all sister societies to make use of this opportunity and educate the general public about quackery, steroid abuse and misuse, resistant tinea and other common chronic skin problems.

Focus on soft skills has become an essential part of our daily clinical practice. To develop soft skills, we have started three different programs; ‘SARATHI’ for the clinic assistants and front desk staff, ‘MANTHAN’ for consultants and ‘INNER CIRCLE’ for post graduates. I thank Dr Manjunath Hulmani for successfully coordinating these events. I request all the members to actively participate in all such programs.

IADVL KN Academy, headed by chairperson Dr Manjunath Shenoy and Convenor Dr Ashwini PK, is actively contributing towards designing the scientific content of all IADVL KN academic events. In addition to this, the academy has also initiated clinical research. I request all the institutes and sister societies to join hands with IADVL KN and IADVL KN Academy in these endeavours by organising more scientific events and also contributing towards clinical research.

This year, we have introduced elections for the posts of office bearers of IADVL Karnataka. All life members are eligible to participate through E voting. To facilitate this, I request all life members to update their mobile numbers and E mail ids on IADVL KN database accessible through our websites www.iadvlkarnataka.org and also www.iadvl.org.

I thank Dr Nagesh TS and Dr Namitha Chathra for successfully bringing out yet another issue of DERMAPEN.

I thank our president Dr Sathish Pai and all office bearers, zonal and district coordinators, office bearers of sister societies for their active contribution towards all the activities of IADVL Karnataka.

With warm regards

Dr Manjunath R

Hon Secretary General,

IADVL Karnataka.

From the Editor’s desk

Dear members,

It is a matter of great joy to bring to you the next issue of Dermapen, the official bulletin of IADVL- KN. In this issue, we have captured the numerous achievements and activities of office bearers and members of IADVL-KN during the last season.

Hellen Keller rightly says that the world is moved along not only by the mighty shoves of its heroes, but also by the aggregate of the tiny pushes of each honest worker. Similarly, IADVL Karnataka is fortunate to have not just heroes who have initiated several impactful projects such as Charmaratha, Vitiligo day observation, Vitiligo Ratha, Saarathi, Sethubandha etc, but also a multitude of honest workers who have taken these herculean projects to successful culmination. In addition to ably continuing these projects, the present leadership of IADVL-KN, with Dr. Sathish Pai at the helm, has laid the cornerstone for several new projects such as ‘Manthan’ and ‘Inner circle’.

In addition to supporting the academic and community service initiatives of IADVL-KN, our members and sister societies have conducted several CMEs, rural camps, community oriented services and relief activities for flood victims. Several members of IADVL-KN have brought laurels to the organization by making a mark in the National and International arena.

We thank Dr. Manjunath Kollegal, secretary of IADVL-KN; all the district co-ordinators and members of IADVL-KN who have actively participated in the various activities and provided the inputs necessary for bringing out this issue of the Dermapen. We take pride in showcasing such activities and achievements in Dermapen and request you to continue your support in the future.

We also urge all the members to exercise your right to vote and ensure the success of IADVL-KN elections.

Dr Nagesh T S Dr Namitha Chathra

Editor, Dermapen Assistant editor

District jail service, KMC, Manipal

Dermatology services to the inmates of district Jail,

Udupi have been provided for the last three years. The

Department of Dermatology and Psychiatry, KMC Manipal

received official permission by the district administration

on November 9th 2018 during the legal service day. We

have been providing health awareness, counselling,

consultation and free treatment to the inmates of District

Jail on the first Saturday of every month. Inmates with skin

problems are examined and then given free treatment.

Follow-up visits are done on subsequent weeks whenever

needed. Psychiatry medicines are provided by the Primary

health centre taking care of the district Jail. Dermatology

medicines are largely self-financed and includes samples

provided by H & H Pharmaceuticals. Pro bono services to

district Jails by the Dermatologist and Psychiatrists is very

Improving the lives of patients with leprosy

A project titled “Improving the lives of patients with

leprosy”was conducted from October 2018 to September

2019 for a period of 12 months in the Department of

Dermatology, RajaRajeswari Medical College & Hospital

(RRMCH), Bengaluru. The main objectives of this project

were to educate the health care workers, general public and

patients about leprosy, to provide secondary (appropriate

leprosy wound care) and tertiary rehabilitation of leprosy

patients and to conduct a pilot research project.

Education: Leprosy education and awareness to health

care workers, general public and patients were imparted

in the form of conducting health education camps in the

Primary health centres in and around rural Bengaluru in

association with the Department of Community Medicine,

RRMCH. In these camps the patients and school children

were screened for leprosy and associated complications.

Information about leprosy was disseminated through

educational talks and distribution of pamphlets. A total

of eleven camps were conducted in the last one year. We

were able to improve the awareness and knowledge about

leprosy in the health care workers and they were informed

to report any suspected case of leprosy immediately to

the medical officer. We screened a total of 1609 people

(950 males and 659 females) for leprosy and identified

four new patients (three male and one female) of leprosy

and twocases (one male one female) of trophic ulcers who

were started on treatment. These patients were counselled

regarding the importance of completing the prescribed

course of treatment and also to report if they noticed any

symptoms of reactions or any ulcers. We want to sustain

this educational activity by continuing to conduct more

health awareness camps and screen the public for leprosy

and also educate the health care workers and general public

regarding leprosy. “World Leprosy Day” was observed

on January 30th, 2019 in association with Summanahalli

Leprosy Rehabilitation Center, Bengaluru. The District

Leprosy Officer also participated in this program. The

inmates and their families along with the caretakers were

educated about the various treatment modalities available

at RRMCH for disability prevention and management.

Service : Appropriate dressing materials required for

leprosy wound care were donated to Summanahalli Leprosy

Rehabilitation center, Bengaluru, which rehabilitates

around 60 old and new leprosy cases and their family

members. Ten cases of chronic non-healing trophic ulcers

(8 males and 2 females) which were identified in the camps

and also referred from Sumanahalli Leprosy Rehabilitation

Cente were treated with platelet rich fibrin matrix (PRFM)

dressing. All the ulcers healed and are having a better quality

of life post- treatment with PRFM. PRFM is an innovative

method to treat chronic leg ulcers.Autologous platelet-

rich fibrin matrix (PRFM) being rich in growth factors can

be effective in the treatment of chronic non-healing leg

ulcers. We are sustaining this service activity by continuing

to help Sumanahalli by providing their requirements and

also by treating chronic non-healing trophic ulcers referred

by them to our hospital free of cost.

DermapenDermapenPresident’s message

Dear members,Greetings from IADVL KN.It is nice to hear that the next issue of DERMAPEN is being

brought out. After taking over in the month of October 2018, we continued

with the programs implemented by the previous office bearers. “SARATHI”, a soft skill program for front office staff, was a great success. With the success of this program, IADVL KN implemented two more soft skills workshop. The first one, “MANTHAN” program, was for the benefit of the consultants. We had four programs in different cities of Karnataka and more are in pipeline so as to cover entire Karnataka. This program taught us newer skills in handling our patients and also building up human skills. The other program, termed as ‘INNER CIRCLE”, was conducted for the benefit of residents. The first ‘Inner circle’ training was held at Father Mullers Medical College, Mangalore and about 60 residents attended, actively participated and learnt soft skills. This program will be continued in the coming months so as to benefit all residents.

The MIDCUTICON 2019 was held at Chitradurga and Dr Yogendra did an excellent job. A new community awareness program was launched by flagging off IADVL KN Ratha at Chitradurga. This will be an exclusive, fully fabricated vehicle owned by IADVK KN, and will travel to all districts, talukas and villages of Karnataka educating people about common skin diseases, skin health, misuse and abuse of topical steroids, quackery, over the counter sale of medicines etc. A road map for the entire year has been prepared. IADVL KN would like to thank Dr. Chandrashekar B.S., Dr. Shashikumar B.M., Dr. Manjunath Hulmani and others for conceptualising, implementing and seeing that it progresses as per the plan. We would also like to thank all the local co-ordinators who did a tremendous job of implementing the plan and also making sure that the core objectives of the Ratha program were achieved.

IADVL-KN’s connect program ‘Sethubhandhan’ and IADVL National Pan India GP round table meetings will be implemented in the coming months to sensitise the participants to the misuse and abuse of topical steroids.

IADVL KN election for various posts was initiated this year. I request all the members to register for online voting. This will also help you to vote during the IADVL National elections. By being e-voters you can also avail the group insurance scheme (IADVL GPA Scheme), the premium of which will be paid by IADVL National. IADVL National will also be providing Indemnity insurance for interested members. The insurance premium will be nominal and will depend on the insurance coverage. The premium will have to be borne by the members. The details of which will be released soon.

IADVL KN has acquired land for our office. This was possible due to the untiring effort of Dr Chandrashekar. We would like congratulate and thank him for making this possible. Many of our members have brought accolades to IADVL KN through their publications, community service and holding distinguished positions in National IADVL and public offices. We would like congratulate them.

I am extremely grateful to all the EC members, coordinators, sister society office bearers, each and every member of the association for their active participation, guidance and for effectively carrying out various activities of the association.
