President's Message

At the February Exec meeting, I wasupset to hear of the death of oneof our members. Historically, wehave avoided mention of members

deaths in the pages of DER 6ASSER,the reason being that we don'talways hear of every members death,and we wouldn't want to mention one

while overlooking another. For themost part, I tend to agree, butthere are certain circumstances

where exception should be taken.Through the years, only a smallnumber come immediately to mind -Joe Bickle, Rocky Williams, ZackWobensmith, George Howard, Earl andEvelyn Stone (the last four werementioned at recent meetings) andof course, Mark Donohue and A1Holbert. Yes, some were just closepersonal friends of the ExecCommittee members at the time, butthe real reason for their mention

was that all these members embodied

the true spirit of Riesentoter.

The recent death of George Bukovskyshould not go without mention.George, a true competitor, was theonly really serious concours personthat I know of in our region. Ipersonally did not know him well ona social level, but like many of us,I knew him on a competitive level.His impeccably prepared concours 911was a fixture at our annual picnic,the Philadelphia Car Show andvarious other events for miles

around. Anyone who has everseriously entered a concours knowsthe hard work and frustration

involved, but that never seemed tohave a detrimental effect on

George. He was always smiling andwilling to take time to answerquestions about his car and thework he put into it. We extend our

condolences to his family andfriends. We will all miss him and

his bright red 911 at the events.

The 1990 racing season looks to bea rocky one for Porsche. With tworaces already run, Porsche has yetto post a win. Jaguar placed 1-2at Daytona, and Nissan won at Miami.Actually, Toyota was dominating theFlorida street race until a

confrontation put it into the"Jersey curbing", squelching analmost certain win. Of course,there is no such thing as "almostcertain win" in racing, just askDale Ernhardt who lost the NASCAR

Daytona 500 in the last 1/4 lap I

Porsche's Indy car effort continuesat Warrington; however, there hasbeen a slight glitch in the plans.Sponsorship for this season was tohave come from the investment firm,Moneytron, but within the last twoweeks that sponsorship has beenwithdrawn. Needless to say, thiswas an unexpected and unpleasantsurprise. Fortunately, the effortwill continue with Porsche backingif another sponsor cannot beobtained. Quaker State Oil willcontinue as a secondary sponsor.

I spoke with Jurgen Barth at Miamiconcerning Le Mans. He said therace definitely will go on - withthe two chicanes in the Mulsanne

straight. The way this affects thecars and drivers is that the topspeed attained is not changed, butthe length of time at that speed isdecreased very dramatically. Thefactory will not be entering a workscar, but will be assisting the Joestteam there. Actually the Joest teamhas been chosen as the development

team for the "new" 962. There won't

he any major chassis redesign atthis time, but there will be someaerodynamic changes to improve theoverall competitiveness of the car.

Well, nearly everyone I talk to isgetting the urge for the car seasonto start, be it rally, concours,autocross or driver's schools.

Jerry Weger has an early springtech session scheduled to allow

everyone to clear the cobwebs outof his/her Porsche. Our two

January events were very wellattended, I hope that this is anindication of the rest of the year.Keep the momentum going - 1990 -the Year of Involvement.

Vintage Opportunity

Last month, I wrote that Philly willhold a vintage race on August 4-5.We will be able to participate byvolunteering to be course workers,corner workers and the like. We

expect to have a Porsche Paddock inreturn. We might even be able tohost a side show autocross.

The race preparations have advancedto where final insurance matters

are being ironed out. Having cementbarriers around all parts or justspectator parts of the 1.7 mileFairmount Park course is the majorunknown at this point. Mercedeshas come in as the automobile

sponsor, and as yet, a Philadelphiaheavyweight has not been identifiedas the major sponsor.

Once sponsorship is buttoned down,I will attend a work committee. To

gain maximum benefits, we need tocommit maximum workers. Please

call me 293-1916 (H) or 687-4801 (W)to say you are interested, so thatI can gauge how many people we candeliver to the event. It will be

fun to participate in an historicrace which the city has missed forthe last 80 years.

I guess back then the 356's wereused year round and not only whenthe sun was shining and there wasn'ta cloud in the sky.

March 1965 - Missing

March 1970 - "April to August and aHillclimb every month!" If youattended our meeting last month,you heard about hillclimbing andsaw some video of these very

events. Given the schedule, youcan see the amount of interest.

March 1975 - "A little tidbit from

Road & Track" - "TEN YEARS AGO we

tested the brand-new Porsche 911,which was the first entirely newPorsche in 16 years; all theprevious models were derived fromthe Type 356, dating back to 1948.But because the basic qualities arefar above average, it undoubtablyrates in the top class among modernGT cars. The comments are almost

Exec Committee Minutes

The February Exec meeting was heldat the home of Lisa and Rex Carle.

In attendance were: Bob Lamb, JimHartman, Bob Russo, Bill Miller,Sybil and Paul Margaritis, Janetand Jerry Weger, Rex and LisaCarle, Debbie and Bill Cooper, ArtRothe, Vern Lyle, Bill O'Connell,John Williamson and Betsi Leidy.

Autocross and Hillclimb will be the

topics for the February generalmeeting. Vern Lyle will speakabout autocrossing, no surprise toanyone except himself, and DickSweigart wil present hillclimb. Apermanent location for the generalmeetings was discussed, no decision.

We will hold a Charity Car Wash,site and date to be determined; andLarry Herman will be asked if hecan run this again. The Club willtake a year off from the car raffle,due to difficulties with sale of

tickets in *89.

Treasury has a balance of $5,300.Jim Hartman asked to be keptabreast of which vendors must be

invoiced. We should probably havea bigger slush fund to be moreflexible, but ways to do this werenot determined.

John Williamson reports a total of758 members: he is trying to getmore application boards to thedealerships, but maintaining themis a problem. Due to high mailingcosts, we may eliminate mailingPANORAMA to prospective members. Adirect mailing will precede the NewMembers Meeting, which will probablybe held in the spring, venue notyet fixed. Heads of the variousareas should give a presentation.

Two drag races are scheduled atMaple Grove in conjunction with theCorvette Club; one will be combinedwith a picnic.

We will offer the owner of Cornog$200 since his price was not firm.April 15 date will be changed.

Bob Lamb handed out a revised list

of track events in the northeast.

He is negotiating with PIR for acontract. All tracks want more

coverage for insurance which meansthat costs will go up. We need atleast 100 entrants to break even

and 120 to make money. Our Mid-Ohioevent was cancelled for various

reasons, some of which are: ourdate was too late in the season,many other regions run there, andwe were not able to combine with

Allegheny, so it was a goodpossibility that we would losemoney. Other marques will not beallowed to enter our schools until

we see how Pocono fills up.

Jerry Weger will purchase twotorque wrenches and a vacuum brakebleeding kit for tech.

The annual picnic will be at CampHideaway on August 26. Camp costsus $500, we will charge $15/couple.

Spring Wine Tasting is in planningstage, with same format as lastyear; cost to be kept to $10/person.Investigations are being made abouta one-day trip instead of overnight.

The number of people to sit on theyear-end awards committee wasdiscussed, no decision. We alsoshould write down the meaning ofthese awards.

Historian Debbie Cooper will buy a$30 file to store Club records.

It was with sadness that we learned

of the death of George Bukovsky.It was decided to remember Georgewith an award given in his name atthe picnic car show.

On Backroads - Rally Date Changed

Saturday, March 31 is the date ofRiesentoter*3 Fool's Folly Rally.If you pay careful attention tosuch things, you'll notice thatthis is different from the April1st date originally announced. Thechange in dates is not an AprilFool's joke, merely a reflection ofthe very busy schedule of eventsthat PCA (and SCCA) have in storefor us this year. Rather thanconflict with the SCCA autocross

school (my true allegiance isshowing) and PCA events onsucceeding Sundays, I changed thedate to Saturday. A Porscheenthusiast's dream weekend - a

rally on Saturday and an autocrossschool on Sunday.

Riesentoter members have shown a

renewed interest in rallyingrecently, however, our rally skillsdon't seem to match up with ourenthusiasm. For this reason, Ihave made this a verystraightforward map rally, with nointentional traps (a temptationhard to resist on April Fool'sweekend), yet it should beenjoyable to all who participate.At registration you will receive amap of Bucks county withapproximately 8 locations marked onit. All you have to do is go toeach of these sites, answer asimple question to verify that youhave been there, go to the rallyendpoint (a nearby restaurant) andshow me how many miles you drove.The winning team is that which hasanswered all of the questionscorrectly, and accomplished it inthe least number of miles.

Simple. You pick the route, youdecide when to leave and where

you're headed. You decide what

speed to drive and how long thisrally is going to take you. Youcan't get lost. I'll even make

allowances for the "hard-core"

rallyists with odd-size tires whofeel their odometers are incorrect.

What I'm trying to convey is thatthis is a FUN, easy rally; plus,Bucks county has some terrificrally roads that you should drivein your Porsche. Ideally, each carwill have a driver and a navigator,but if you would like to tacklethis rally without a navigator,I'll let you do that, too (youcould be a navigator without adriver, but you won't have much funsitting in the passenger seat alonewith a map). You don't even haveto drive your Porsche if you don'twant to. The rally will leave fromHolbert's Porsche-Audi-VW on Route

611 in Warrington (i.e. not theformer Porsche-only facility).

Registration will open at 12 noon,and you can start on your AprilFool's Odyssey anytime after abrief driver's meeting at 12:45.You should be home before dinner,or you can stay and enjoy therestaurant's fare. Also, we runrain or shine. Cost will be $10,there will be one class for all

entrants (INEXPERIENCED, judging byRTR's past rally history), ANDbring a pencil with a good eraser.You can bring along a piece ofstring or a ruler to help plot yourroute, but no opisometers, please.If you have any questions, give mea call at 661-7771, weekdays.

Malibu Challenge - April 28

Saturday, April 28 will see some ofthe closest competition anywhere,between Porsche drivers in close to

identical cars at Malibu Grand Prix.

The cars are automatic trans, 440ccLolas on Goodyear slicks and willgo around 45 mph. Think that'sslow? Try the twisting scaled downtrack as fast as you dare. Youwon't worry about what speed you'redoing, only the time that flashesup for everyone to see. It's aboutcar control and precise positioning.

Each car is a little different, butit's not enough to matter. I'veseen everyone in a group want towait for the "blue" car because it

has run the fastest lap that day,shunning the yellow pig that's bogslow. Then the quickest drivergets in the yellow car and runseven faster than he did in the blue

one. It's always the driver.

When the competition starts, itwill be random selection in

whatever car is available: you mayget the "blue" or the "yellow"one. Three consecutive laps in thesame car, and your score will bethe total of each team member's

fastest lap. Remember, three malesand one female make up a team.

By the way, if you want to play butcan't get a team together, just letme know and we'll match you up withsomeone else in the same boat.

There is a $10 entry fee per team.t

We'll start practice at 10:00 withcompetition runs around 11:00. Weonly have exclusive use of thetrack for 2 hours, so latecomerswill be missing practice. You mustpurchase a Photo ID for $2.35, (socome a little early), and the lapswill cost $1.50 each. You canbring your own helmet, but it musthave a face shield.

Despite the picture, the cars neverget very close together, eventhough there may be three on thetrack at one time. A computercontrols the starting lights.

If we don't fill out the ten teams

(40 drivers) by the March meetingon the 28th, we will open the eventto the hardcore SCCA autocrossers,and it will fill up immediately.

There is the possibility of apractice session on some otherSaturday prior to the actual event,we'll keep the registered teamdrivers informed about that.

The prizes are being worked out andwill be awarded to the winning team,probably cash so they can split it,and to the fastest male and the

fastest female driver.

Malibu is in Mount Laurel, NJ, just7 miles from the Tacony-Palmyrabridge, off Route 73. Turn rightonto Fellowship Rd north, it's thesecond turn (a jughandle) at theintersection; 1/8 mile, Malibu ison the left. If you reach Rt 295,you went too far.

AX Ramblings

Riesentoter is gearing up for thefast-approaching 1990 autocrossseason. The first event is set for

April 8 at the Naval Air DevelopmentCenter in Warminster. It is easy tofind (see directions below). Onthat date, we will be holding ourannual school as well as the first

of our 5-event series. Novices or

experienced drivers looking for afew pointers from our expertteaching staff, should come out tothe school then stay for the mainevent. What a great opportunity toget the season off to a good start:driving while the instruction isfresh in your mind! The school willfeature instruction in most aspectsof autocrossing, the lane change,slalom, braking and acceleration,and both increasing and decreasingradius turns. This should get youoff on the right foot.

For those of you new to the sport,autocross is generally a low speedevent run on a course that is

defined by pylons. The racing isdone against the clock, notdirectly against another driver.The course is different at everyevent and you will not know what toexpect until you arrive. Also,there is no practice as a rule, soyou must "walk-through" verycarefully to plan your drivingstrategy. The thrill of this typeof driving is hard to express,especially to people who like todrive fast no matter what. This isnot an event of speed, but ratherof judgement, smoothness, analysis,and decision-making. Watch thosewho do it well and you will knowwhat I mean.

Our new site is an abandoned runwayabout 1/4 mile long with a smoothsurface so your tires can do theirbest. This setup should allow for

some third gear sections. Verntells us he has some ideas from

previous SCCA National courses runon a similar site, so we're off toa good start on that front.

The Naval Air Development Center atJohnsville is located at the

intersection of Street Road (Rt 132)and Jacksonville Road in Warminster.

Take Exit 27 of the PA turnpike(Willow Grove), north on Rt 611, andright onto Blair Mill Road. Goright onto County Line road, crossYork Road (Rt 263), then left ontoJacksonville. Main entrance is at

Jacksonville and Street Road. Payheed to the MP's directions once

you're inside; they don't want uswandering all over the place, andwe don't want to inconvenience them.

The only rules changes for 1990 arethat 911s over 3.2 liters will run

in Class B - and the modification

penalty points for a front "cambertruss" have been reduced from three

to one.

Well, it's March and time to getgeared-up for the track andautocross seasons. I hope to see agood turn out at our Tech Sessionon April 7 at Rosemont Imports.Come at nine o'clock and get a lift!

When you receive your DriverEducation packets for the Poconoevent I would appreciate it if youwould take a minute to review yourTech Forms, so that when you getyour car teched there will be no

misunderstandings or surprises.There have been some changes thatcould affect you. Please understandthat tech is conducted so that we

may maintain the highest possiblesafety standards. It is for yourprotection, and the protection offellow participants. We all strivefor safe and educational events so

please leave your "attitudes" athome and come willing to play bythe rules.

It is now required that all oillines on the pressure side beequipped with threaded typefittings. In other words, hoseclamped and push-on bayonet typesare considered inadequate. Thisprimarily affects cars withaftermarket oil coolers. Thereason for this is obvious. We

just can't take a chance of havingone of these fittings fail. Atbest it will mean interrupting anevent to clean up the oil spillthat is invariably placed exactlyon the line.

I know that some of us waterpumpershave joyfully screwed our fireextinguishers to the plywoodbacking of our rear seats. Sorry,no good. Thru bolts with largebacking washers are OK, but metalto metal is more desirable.

Also, on some late model 944s and944 turbos there is a less than

strong fuel line fitting thatdeserves attention. This line ison 85 1/2 and up cars. It is ontop of the engine where fuel isdelivered to the fuel injectionrail. This rail is to the side of

the valve cover and is shielded byblack plastic. An upgraded line isavailable (#944.110.413.02) andcosts about $25. You will need anopen-end 19mm wrench and the newpart to affect the fix. Don't letit go - a leak is very possible andthe exhaust manifold is close by.Handy hint: replace this line withthe engine cold. Some fuel willspill from residual fuel systempressure and you surely don't wantto cause the problem that you aretrying to avoid. If you need help,see me, with new part in hand, atthe Tech Session. Nuff said.

Driver's Education

Nearby is a list of this year'sDriver's Education events in theeast. From March to November thereis hardly a break anywhere. Thislarge number of events is certainlya testimony to their popularity,however, it raises some questions.As a region, how many events shouldwe run? Is the market possiblyoversold? In recent years we haverun 3-4 events a year, and theyusually generated a surplus ofmoney that is used to support otherClub activities. Now though,several regions, including ours,are experiencing problemsattracting enough participants tocover the costs associated withrenting a track and running anevent. There are several causes:the tracks are more expensive torent, and insurance requirementshave increased. With so manyevents to choose from, potentialentrants can be very selective.The result is that quality isprobably more important thanquantity. The timing of an eventand its proximity to competingevents are important considerations.

This year, we will be running threeevents. The first is at Pocono on

April 21-22. We believe this is agood date and venue for severalreasons. It is a good track forbeginners, it is nearby and it isearly in the season, so it may drawwell from other regions, and thereare no competing events.

On June 2-3, we are at P.I.R, aone-mile tri-oval in Nazareth.This is a new and different trackfor us. The facility is beautifullymaintained and only an hour and 15minutes from King of Prussia. Thetime of year is mild, we have littlein the way of competing events andthere is interest from other regionsdue to a curiosity factor.

On July 21-22, we will be atWatkins Glen. The time of year isperfect, and the Glen almost alwaysdraws well due to its uniquereputation and mystique.

We normally have an event at SummitPoint in early August. Earlierthis year I contacted Bill Scottand it seems that the only falldate left was the weekend afterThanksgiving, and that was not veryattractive. Particularly sincePotomac is scheduled there theprevious weekend. We will try fora better date in 1991.

In 88 and 89 we ran events atMid-Ohio. The facility is veryattractive and the track is apleasure to drive. However, it isa long way away. Very fewRiesentoters attended. In order tokeep from losing money at Mid-Ohio,we need to draw 75% or moreparticipants from out of region.That is tough to do. There weretwo dates available, but oneconflicted with Pocono, and theExec Committee felt that the otherdate in October was too late in theyear. However, if you want to runat the Mid-Ohio track this year,Potomac has a very nice date latein September. I suspect that youwill be able to get into theirevent.

I share all this to suggest it isnot easy to get good track dates,since many clubs compete for them.On the other hand, there are plentyof events at any track you mightwish to run. In most cases, thehost clubs are looking for out ofregion participants just as we arefor our events. If you have notattended another region's events,you are missing a lot of fun.

Autocross Revisited

I was going to present this at theFebruary meeting, but since therewere not many people left when itwas my turn to speak, 1 thought itwas better to publish it here somore people could take from it whatthey will. If anyone did not get acopy of the 10-page handout whichdescribes autocrossing in much moredetail, these will again beavailable at the March meeting.

Since the program was billed as asort of history of Riesentoter inautocrossing, a few things come tomind. Way back when, maybe beforethere were pylons, RTR used to r\inevents at a go-kart track nearReading called Christmas Village.They were called gymkhanas then,and the man who was called "KingGymkhana" was Dick Sweigart.

For several years, there was aformal series pitting RTR againstMJR and Schattenbaum regions withteam drivers and 50-60 cars everyweekend. The competition was sointense that Chuck Walter even

brought out a VW Squareback just toget team points - and he beat a fewpeople with that car, too! SkipChalfont drove a SAAB for awhile;Wayne Flegler taught us somethingabout stagger, running bigger tireson the right side of the car. BobKoerbel was in a different car

every week. Bob McCullen and BobPatton were in the same cars theyhave today. And who could forgetDick Miles towing his Speedsterwith a Bentley! It was during thisperiod that the Broken Crankshaftaward got started. Bill Schmidtused to beat up on most everybodywith a slightly-improved 4-cyl 912on Michelin-X tires. When he

retired, he passed along histwo-piece crank as the trophy forthe most improved new autocrosser.

RTR was also involved with a groupcalled the Delaware Valley SprintAssociation consisting of 5 or 6clubs in the area who developed aset of rules and ran great serieschampionships for 12-15 years.

Some of the sites we used were GE

in Valley Forge, Bucks and Montcocommunity colleges, the parking lotof the Bazaar of all Nations in

Willow Grove, Christmas Village,Cornog, of course, and in the lateryears, the Montgomeryville Mall.DVSA was eventually replaced by thepresent SCCA series.

You may think of autocross asdodging pylons and driving at lowspeeds. It's neither of those.First, it's a lot of fun and mostimportantly, it is competition -the only truly competitive drivingevent offered by the Porsche Club.Secondly, as a contest of precisiondriving, it puts a premium on yourability to analyze a new coursethat you've never seen before,deciding on a strategy for you andyour car to run it as fast aspossible, and executing your planin just three attempts.

You can't throw away the first runto "learn the course", go all outon the second run to "find the

limits", then correct everythingfor the final run. That's a

beginner's approach that doesn'twork. You have wasted the first

two runs and put all the pressureon yourself for the third. Peoplewho try this often say, "except forthe pylon on the last run, I couldhave had a 56.7." Approaching itlike that - you'll never know. Youhave to try to be perfect on thevery first run, eliminating anymistakes on the other two. In a

competitive event, where someone ina comparable car is trying to beatyou, there is no room for error.

Most people who come out to try anautocross are several seconds

behind the class winner. Most of

them think that the difference is

in the car - and it's not. It's

experience, and it's the differencein attitude. The class winner has

realized that the striving forperfection within yourself is thegreatest challenge of all, anddriving in competition is puttingyour effort and your skills out inthe open for all to see.

It can be very ego-shattering toface the fact that someone in an

"inferior" car can drive better

than you do. Well, most everybodystarts at this point - but the bestdrivers go on to learn how to getthe most out of their car, and moreimportantly, out of themselves.They can tolerate losing by a fewtenths of a second every weekbecause they realize that they aregetting better and soon they canchallenge for the class win. Whenyou get several experienced peoplewho all think that they are thefastest, that's when you'll see thebest driving you'll ever see.

Incidentally, beginners should notworry about "setting up" the car.The driver counts for about 75% in

this game, so if your car is ingood condition, it is sufficientfor a beginning autocrosser. Ifyou think it isn't, have anexperienced driver take it out fora couple of runs. He/she willprobably go a full second or twofaster than your time. Until voufind those two seconds in vour own

driving, vou don't need more power

or the stickiest tires or larger

sway bars or anv other demon tweaks.

Spend vour money on more seat time

and your energy on concentration -

that's what makes you go fast.

If you think you can already drivelike Alain Prost, come out and showus in competition - we'd reallylike to see it. But if you want toleam how to drive at the absolute

limit of acceleration, cornering,braking and concentration 100percent of the time - get someexperience in autocrossing. Itwill definitely make you a betterdriver. Even those who think that

since they've been to a driver'sschool at Watkins Glen or to a

hillclimb they know how to "race".Maybe especially those people.

Autocrossing is a lot of fun with agood social atmosphere as well, andyou don't have to get too seriousabout it if you don't want to.

The autocross school is on April 8.

OK, folks, its time for a littlehistory lesson. Many of us loveour Porsches so much that we treat

them much better than almost anyother possession we might have.Always sparkling clean, enginesrunning so smooth that they purr,and usually resting peacefully in awarm, well-secured garage. I, onthe other hand, and I know I'm notthe only one, drive my car everyday,rain or shine, and drive it as hardas it is meant to be driven(personal opinion, of course).But, whichever school of thoughtyou come from, if asked by anon-Porsche person, how much wouldyou know about your car'sheritage? Well, the followingshould give you some insight. Yousee, Porsche has "roots". Read onto learn more, there'll be a teston this next month.

In 1947, Porsche was a respectedautomotive design company. But notan auto manufacturer. Havingworked on everything from race carsto tractors to road cars for

leading automakers, Ferdinand AntonErnst Porsche had definite ideas

about what a car should be.

Looking around the world, this cardid not exist. Cars were too big,too heavy, and they did not let thedriver feel in touch with theroad. The relied too much on brute

strength rather than agility andtechnology to achieve performance.

The only answer was to build it. Asmall, light sports car that couldcover long distances comfortably.Handcrafted, yet built to endurethe rigors of racing. This car wasto duplicate as nearly as possiblethe feel achieved in an open-wheeledracer. Yet serve as durable,everyday transportation.

In the spring of 1948, this carrolled out into the sunshine forthe first time. In what would

become true Porsche fashion, itignored virtually every acceptedconvention of the day. The enginewas mounted just ahead of the rearaxle. The body was of hand-hammeredaluminum. Trim was minimal. It waspowered by just 35 hp, yet becauseof light weight and aerodynamicdesign, it had a top speed ofnearly 85 mph, which was trulyimpressive for the time.
