Respect ~ Perseverance ~ Growth Deputy Principal Matters by Claire Cartwright D-Block learning begins again! Late last week and all this week moving has taken place between the de- mountables and the remediated D-Block. The Maths and TAS staff mem- bers have appreciated returning to their proper staff rooms and students have enjoyed the fresh look of the classrooms. The front office has had an entire makeover and, while the administrative staff are still awaiting some new office furniture, we are all very pleased with how great the reception area looks! SASS appreciation week This week marks the annual SASS recognition week. School Administrative Support Staff play a fundamental role in the running of our school. Without them, many essential aspects of your childs education would simply not occur. Our wonder- ful SAS Staff make essential orders of supplies and equip- ment, assist teachers to set up practical lessons and assist student learning in the classroom and in the library. They over- see attendance, finance and enrolments, fix our IT problems and maintain school grounds and buildings. They answer the phones, organise mail and photocopying and produce this newsletter! This week our SASS were treated to a Friday lunch, goody bags, flowers and cupcakes. Thanks go to Man- dy Sibbald, Mark Watson and the P&C for their thoughtful contributions to make our valued staff feel special. Year 8 into 9 subject selection 2021 Its certainly been an important week of decision-making for all year 8 stu- dents! Last Friday all students and parents were emailed a copy of the subject selection booklet. This year, due to Covid-19 restrictions, we could not hold our usual parent information evening. Therefore we created a website which contains resources to help students select their elective sub- jects for the next two years. On Wednesday, students were able to engage in the traditional subject taster sessions, whereby students rotated around to different venues to hear about the different subjects on offer and ask questions. Students will study two 200 hour elective subjects over the course of stage five (Years 9 and 10)and complete two enrichment projects Term 3 Week 6 28 August 2020 COVID 19 SICK BAY PROCEDURES If you child is unwell with flu-like symptoms, or sent home from school with flu-like symptoms then you must seek medical advice from your GP If your GP directs you to have a Covid 19 test, the school must be sent the negative test results before your child can return to school. during Year 9. Year 7 and Year 8 high achievers morning teas Each semester Mrs Gettens and Mr Smith host a high achievers morning tea for each year group. On Wednesday, a morning tea was held for the top 10 year 7 students and today, eleven year 8 students were invited. To be invited to the morning tea, students have to be highly ranked across all subjects, representing perseverance and dedica-

tion to all areas of study. Year 10 History incursion with the Sydney Jewish Museum Each semester, a year 10 History group will visit the Sydney Jewish Museum as part of their study “Have we learnt from the Holocaust?” Due to Covid-19, this semes-ter’s Year 10 group could not unfortunately participate in this highly anticipated excur-sion. Rather, the educators at the Sydney Jewish Museum was able to offer an online incursion, to help students learn about and reflect on the nature of Jewish resistance to the Nazi regime.

Snapshots of learning It’s always lovely to see smiling faces in the classroom and out in the grounds. What follows is some photos of Ms Chim’s year 7 Maths class.

P&C Transport Survey We would like to encourage our school community to participate in the P&C Student Transport and Traffic Survey. With the IEC joining us on campus in Term 4, transport arrangements for SIHS are up for review. Your feedback and student travel data from this survey will help to inform the decision making process. It is helpful if the decision makers are aware of any transport issues our students are currently facing, so these can be taken into account. Please check your email for the survey link.

YEAR 10 TIMBER

This week students began assembly of their bedside cabinet projects. In the lead up to this, students had to design and sketch their final product design, and learn to master the router, biscuit joiner and the bandsaw to manufacture the panels for their projects. Students have grown in confidence in using the workshop machinery, and are successfully working together to advance their products. A complex piece, the bedside cabinet is to be fitted with drawers, runners, doors, hinges and finishes yet to be made or applied. Well done to the class for coming back from lockdown and get-ting on with it. Josh Collins

YEAR 9 STEM

This term students in Yr 9 STEM have been busy learning how to construct and control a robot. Students then ap-ply their skills in a simulated First Lego League competition. Each team solves as many "mini missions" as they can around the theme of technology and saving water. The winner is the team which accumulates the most points at the end of the competition. Good luck! Ben Yuen STEM Teacher

Stay 1.5m apart where possible

Wear a mask if physical distancing isn’t possible

Get tested asap if they have even the mildest of symptoms

Tell the clinician doing the test they are a Year 12 student and to mark the referral ‘Urgent - HSC student’

Stay home and self-isolate until results are known

Receive a negative test result before returning to school; showing the school a screenshot of an SMS result is sufficient

Call the contact number provided by the clinic if results are not received within 36 hours

KEY CHANGES / ANNOUNCEMENTS FROM THE DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION - YEAR 12

Year 12 students will now have their COVID-19 test results fast tracked through pathology. They simply need to advise the nurse or doctor doing the test that they are HSC students. Results will be fast tracked to reduce disrup-tion to their studies and exams. It is important that all Year 12 students:

Students and their families can find the nearest testing clinic at: www.nsw.gov.au/covid-19/how-to-protect-yourself-and-others/clinics

SCIENCE WEEK NEWS On Monday, 9T Science participated in a 'Grand Challenge' run by Sydney University via Zoom. The students were guided through the design thinking process to come up with a solution that could contribute to the eradication of ma-laria. Students were then required to submit their pitches to the judging panel, where they were competing against teams from 11 other schools for cash prizes. Congratulations to: Second Place: Frida, Jasmin, Aleks, Jess & Jess The pitch: Solar powered street lights that double as mosquito zappers. Third Place: Aden, Vania, Mia, Lucy, Chanel & Ezra The pitch: Specially designed and sustainably produced clothing, with educators employed to re-apply insecticide on the clothing at regular intervals. Highly Commended: Tamaryn, Tabitha, Sophie & Alaiya The students showed great teamwork and innovation throughout the day, while learning a lot about malaria and how Science can be utilised to solve real-world problems. Science Week via Education Perfect was embraced by over 370 students from Tuesday 18

th - Tuesday 25th August.

The annual challenge is to achieve the most points by completing as many Science questions on a variety of topics. Our students answered 47 415 questions during this period and scored over 27 000 points. Out of 1850 schools worldwide, St Ives High was ranked 116

th. In Australia we

were ranked 12th in NSW and 23

rd in Australia.

This year our students achieved some great results.

Shelly Z (9) came 315th in the world with 5000 points. She

gained an Emerald award for her efforts. Tommy C (7) Silver, Max M (9) Bronze and the following all achieved Credits: Zoe C (7), Jack Z (7), Charlotte T (9), Sher-maine A (9), Sahil S (8) and Nitya K (9). The top participating classes during this week were 9 Science – E and 8 Science – X.

Well done to all who participated.

Here are some activities we have done in year 9 science - We are currently looking at current electricity. We started it off by making squishy circuits using play-dough, battery packs and LEDs. This helped students gain a basic understanding of how the components of a circuit and how to build simple circuits. We also went outside and ‘walked’ a large circuit. Students played different roles like being an electrons, a light bulb, an ammeter or a battery. We used props like a pool noodle to convey the idea that the battery gave electrons a ‘push’. We used crumpled paper balls to represent energy ‘picked up’ at the battery and used at the light bulb. Student en-joyed the role playing and gained a good understanding of how current moved in a circuit.

Last week, Year 8 and 9 Science classes celebrated Science week by participating in an Escape Room challenge. Students had to complete 10 practical and critical thinking activities within a time limit. The theme of the challenge was "Deep Blue" which gave students a greater understanding of the current state of our oceans and how they are being affected by changing climate and human influence. Students showed excellent collaborative skills to com-plete these activities and learnt about conservation methods to protect and sustain ocean ecosystems.

SUSTAINABLIITY COMMITTEE NEWS The students in the sustainability committee have been working away with our gardens and due to their commitment the local Council have offered to work with the school to help raise awareness of native bees around the area. The council is going to look at using St Ives High School as a poster school for other sydney schools looking to become more sustainable. The Students found great confidence in the fact that their hard work will not go unnoticed. The council has also offered us a rescue hive from a local job. This hive will be placed in the St Ives STIF forest and with the new planting program occurring soon, the bees will have a field day in the forest pollinating all the new native trees that will be planted. This is a special achievement for the students and the school. Congratulation St Ives High School for our sustaina-ble values being passed down through the students. Lucas De Palo HSIE Teacher

THE SIHS RUN CLUB The SIHS run club has been meeting in hot/cold/rain/shine every Tuesday morning at 7am for the past 2 years. Mem-bers of our group run between 3-5km depending on their level of fitness and it is wonderful to see that some of our newer members are starting to manage longer distances. We also have our virtual run club on strava www.strava.com search for SIHS Run Club and we encourage all mem-bers of the St Ives community to join us. For those of you who are new to running, here is Week 1 of a training pro-gram to get you up and going. The aim is to run 6km in time for the Bare Creek Trail which is scheduled to take place on Sunday the 8th of November. With so many students taking part in Steptem-ber, running is a perfect opportunity to get those steps in (and running allows you to do it so much quicker!). Take the challenge, bring a friend and join us this Tuesday. Beginners 5km Run-ning Program (courtesy of Run NSW) Intermediate 5km Run-ning Program (courtesy of RunNSW)
