Principal’s Report

We have had a very productive term 2 so far.

The term started with our staff development day. This included presentations and workshops involving Headspace, WHS, literacy and numeracy targeted programs, SLSO work, Induction of new staff and information on Google Apps in education. The latter was a workshop created and presented by staff who had attended professional learning on this in the last holidays. My thanks to Mr Gee, Mr Mathieson and Mrs Shoobridge for undertaking this important training. My thanks also to Mr Gee and the Year 12 students who catered.

Our students did us proud again in local ANZAC services. Students and staff alike attended both Curlwaa and Wentworth ceremonies, often with groups other than the school, showcasing their multitude of talents. I was particularly impressed with Tegan and Bailey who gave excellent speeches at both ceremonies. My thanks to Mrs Alderton for helping with this and to the delightful Mr Atkinson for once again asking us to participate. We followed this up with our own Coomealla High school service when we returned to school. Thankyou to Mrs Buckley for organising the event and to Year 10 students for their input.

We have also been busy upgrading the school and again we have had extensive re-carpeting completed in the holidays. We are combining this with a library upgrade and have sourced some funds to assist in this process. The library upgrade will continue over the next few years and I am looking forward to seeing each stage of this “futures driven” project. Visitors are most welcome to come and see our bright new furniture and specialised learning spaces as they are created over the next few months; thank you to Ms Watson and Ms Nixon for their work on this.

Well done to those students who participated in our Cross Country. A big congratulations to Ashton Tilley on his performance. More details of this event can be found in this newsletter.

The next stage of our uniform change is well underway; thankyou to Ms Nixon for her work on our new windcheater. The options are in sketch form and were voted on by students on Monday and went to the P&C on Tuesday. We are hopeful of final decisions being made quickly as the weather is getting chilly! It is anticipated that the windcheaters will be sold through school. As well as enabling us to sell them at a very reasonable cost this will also be an initiative of the retail class and will help them fulfil some of their competencies. Thank you to Mr Celegon and his class for their role in this. We also looked at a few more minor options with Lowes on Monday morning, more details on these ideas soon.

Postponement to Work Experience for Year 10 Dear Parent/Guardian, I am hopeful your Year 10 students have by now handed you a letter concerning work experience that they received on Thursday morning 12.5.16. Just in case they did not, this is a broad summary of the contents! I am writing to advise that a variety of unforeseen circumstances have made it difficult for us to deliv-er the Year 10 Work Experience program that was originally scheduled for 6 – 10 June 2016. In keeping with a timetable which sensibly operates in common across all Sunraysia schools, Work Ex-perience for CHS Year 10 students will now take place in the week beginning 1st August 2016. We apologise for any inconvenience. Students with firm arrangements already in place as at today 12.5.16 will proceed in the original week. The postponement for everyone else presents us with several good opportunities. It gives stu-dents who have already submitted preferences a chance to change them to reflect new or different in-terests they may have developed in the year to date and to match more closely against planned subject selections for Year 11. Students with an interest in our Vocational Education (VET) courses could form relationship with an employer which could be very valuable when they are seeking mandatory industry work placements for those subjects. Finally, this week is closer to the time when employers start thinking about their labour requirements for the coming year and beyond and may give students a better chance to source and secure apprenticeships, traineeships or general employment. We see work experience as a unique opportunity for our Year 10 students and a vital part of our school curriculum. We also take seriously our responsibility to the nation and its diverse and well re-sourced training framework. It is expected that every student in Year 10 will take part in this im-portant activity, and we seek as always the support of parents and the community in assisting students to get appropriately organised. It is also our expectation that any student not attending work experi-ence will be at school for all 5 days of the week of 1 August 2016, or that parents will advise the Prin-cipal in writing well prior to that date of any exceptional circumstances that require their student to miss both school and work experience on any/all of these days. To avoid double handling, any student who already has their wishes in writing to Ms Wakefield and does not intend to change them need not resubmit these – we will do our best action their existing re-quest. Whilst most students enjoy their first or second preference, assurances can never be given in relation to available placements and employers. Students wishing to change their preference/s should see Ms Wakefield before the 20 May 2016 (Friday week) to obtain a new form, complete and resubmit it. Students without any submitted prefer-ences are most advantaged by the change as they have another chance to do so, and should also take a form. Again, assurances are not possible. Preferences must be returned to Ms Wakefield or Mr Celegon by Friday 27 May 2016. Mr Celegon Head Teacher HSIE
