  • About Us

To Create New Frontiers of Knowledge in Quest for Development of a Humane and Just Society Andhra University is not just one of the oldest educational institutions in the country, but is also the first to be conceived as a residential and teaching-cum-affiliating University, mainly devoted to post-graduate teaching and research. Andhra University was constituted in the year 1926 by the Madras Act of 1926. The 86-year-old institution is fortunate to have Sir C.R. Reddy as its founder Vice-Chancellor, as the steps taken by this visionary proved to be fruitful in the long run. The alumni of the University occupy important positions in government administration, Industry and research organizations with in and out side the country. The Government of Andhra Pradesh has appointed the professors of the University as chairman and vice-chairman of the APSCHE and presently ten Universities had Vice-chancellors from Andhra University. There are 636 affiliated colleges spread across five districts under the territorial jurisdiction of Andhra University. The enrolment in Affiliated Colleges is more than 1.5 lakh.

Recognizing the innovative, modern and industrial related curriculum in all courses of the college, research, R&D and consultancy projects undertaken by the faculty, leadership and development, the college has been selected for upgradation to IIT status.

The college is accredited by NAAC with A grade (3.65/4.0), by NBA with 5 years. The college is ISO 9001 2008 certified.

STAR NEWS International TV Channel has adjudged Andhra University College of Engineering (A) as the BEST GOVERNMENT ENGINEERING COLLEGE in February 2011.

In 2014, AU was ranked 27th among the top 50 engineering colleges in India by the Education World magazine, & ranked 10th among the top universities offering PG courses by India Today.

  • From Vice Chancellors Desk

It is a matter of great pleasure and pride for me to invite you to walk through the portals of Andhra University . As one of the oldest Indian Universities, it is well known for imparting higher education in traditional and contemporary areas of science, engineering, arts, commerce, law and fine arts with international standards and recognition. Initiated by the founder Vice-chancellor Dr. C.R. Reddy in 1926, legendaries like Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, a great philosopher and a role model for the human race who later rose to the position of President of India, Dr. V.S. Krishna, a great visionary have continued the tradition of initiating innovative academic programs of national and international relevance and contributed to sustained development of this University. The University's attention in augmenting state of the art equipment, infrastructure and library facilities and conceptualizing and implementing healthy practices in teaching and administration with a democratic team spirit has been applauded by the NAAC, the apex body to judge the credibility of any Indian University. Five constituent colleges and five P.G. Centers of the University provide quality training and research leading to Masters and Doctoral degrees in more than 160 courses. Apart from under graduate programmes in Engineering and Technology the University offers Under graduate degree programmes with a variety of combinations of subjects in B.A., B.Sc., and B.Com courses. Believing in more focused training in professional courses, the University recently started five year integrated programmes in fields like Geology, Information Technology and Software Engineering. I cordially invite you to participate in the Campus Recruitment Programme at our institute and assure you to provide with all the support needed in the process.

Prof. G. S. N. Raju Vice Chancellor, Andhra University.

  • Andhra University College of Engineering The Government of Composite Madras State sanctioned the present Engineering College at Visakhapatnam in 1946 even though the seeds of Technological education were sown when Sugar Technology was started in the year 1933. In 1946, initially the College was located at Cocanada, now called as Kakinada. After the separation of Andhra State in 1953, the Department of Engineering with Mechanical, Civil and Electrical Engineering sections was started as a part of Andhra University. In 1960 it was shifted to a 167 acre land now called the North campus of Andhra University. The restructuring of the University Colleges saw the emergence of Andhra University College of Engineering in 1960. By 1962 the Department of Chemical Technology, earlier known as Sugar Technology that started way back in 1933 itself, was also moved to the North Campus. The sections of Basic Sciences were upgraded in 1964 to Departments in 1979. Over the years, the Andhra University College of Engineering grew from strength to strength and at present offers 17 UG and 42 PG Programs. Andhra University is a premier Institute of higher education in India, was established in 1926. Located on the uplands of Visakhapatnam, 'The City of Destiny', the natural beauty of the University campus is breathtaking, with the spread of serene blue shade of the 'Bay of Bengal' on one side of it and on the other, beautiful green Kailasagiri hill range. Sir Dr. C.R.Reddy was the founder Vice-Chancellor of the Andhra University.

Prof. P. S. Avadhani Principal, AU College of Engineering (Autonomous), Andhra University.

  • Department of Marine Engineering

The idea of starting the Marine Engineering course was mooted because of the age-old links of maritime trade and a long coastline, boosting the enormous marine and oil wealth. With the defense and protective needs of the Country, Visakhapatnam was long "destined" to become not only a viable Port City but also a center of learning of Marine Engineering. In 1965 with the concurrence of ministry of education, ministry of shipping and transport, the Government of India and the Directorate General of Shipping; Marine Engineering specialization was introduced in the form of 'electives' to undergraduate students of Mechanical Engineering.

In 1971, Marine Engineering course was started with the approval of the Ministry of Education and AICTE. In 1981, the course was restructured as Marine Engineering and Mechanical handling specialization to cater to the needs of the industry. The department of Marine Engineering was constituted in the year 1981. The department here is a shining example of the coordination that exists between the university and the local Marine and Shipping organizations. A training program for the engine/Deck cadets of Dredging Corporation of India Limited (DCI) has been continuing since 1977 in the department.

With increasing onshore and offshore oil explorations activities and the Potential Wealth of Marine resources, a four year BE (Naval Architecture) degree course was started in the year 1981, to cater the needs of Hindustan Shipyard Limited, Naval Science Technological Labs, National Ship Design and Research Center, Indian Navy and Visakhapatnam Port Trust. In the year 1999, the Indian Navy has started B.Sc. (Tech) Marine Engineering (4 year) course on self finance basis. The courses have been merged into a single course NAVAL ARCHITECTURE AND MARINE ENGINEERING in 2009. The courses offered by the department are B.E. (Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering), M. Tech (Naval Architecture), M.E. (Marine Engineering and Mechanical Handling) and Ph.D. The department has so far more than 900 undergraduates and about 200 post graduates and many of them have risen to occupy the highest posts in the Merchant Navy and Shipping Industries in India and abroad.
