to up-date it every New Year’s Day so they will remember. Marv andLouise Ahlstrom, as a result of this exercise, found their kit wasoutdated, so they re-stocked theirs and planned to do it every eightmonths.Kent and the Fillmores, Third: Pack for all eventualities. We had no

allowances for toiletries, toilet tissues, wet wipes, extra clothing, etc. Pack sufficient warm clothing for comfort in any weather.

Kent, Fourth: “Make sure you have enough water set aside so you can just grab it.” The Magnussons recommended a water-filtering unit.

Kent, Fifth: “Consider how you plan to shower. Consider how you willhandle latrine duties. Do you have a tent without a floor that candouble as an outhouse with a sit down set up or for use as a shower or wash down space? When you are clean you feel better and you sleep better.”

The Ahlstroms had a portable toilet which was a lifesaver. She highlysuggests that you think about this necessity. (The details of theouthouse - well, we won’t go there.) They were able to take showers because they found a stream that looked very much like the hose in their yard.

Kent and Tonya, Six: Include disposable utensils and paper goods inyour kit so you don’t waste water washing dishes. Also check your supplies periodically. Batteries do go bad and so does your food if youdon’t pay attention.

Kent, Seven: “Include a Dutch oven or two and a camp chef if you haveroom. The best meal I had was from stuff that I scavenged and cookedwith the soup in my 72-hour kit.”

Tonya recommended: --$.99 blow-up swimming rafts as mattresses tosleep on because they are light-weight and easy to store. --One realchallenge was that there was no where to sit. --The Ahlstroms hadsleeping bags for the whole family, but they were light-weight and as aresult, they all slept cold. So buy warm sleeping bags. --to help keepthe children occupied, she recommended books to read to them,miniature-sized games, card games, crayons and coloring books. --a large pan to boil water in --more granola bars --include burn cream infirst-aid kit for burns from the fire and hot pans --head-band lights--rolling back packs to make it easier for the children to carry their   belongings --fly-trap paper --have money (cash) in your kit (the best meal the Ahlstroms had was at Wendy’s the last night). Whydidn’t the rest of us think of that?
