OVERVIEWAstheproblemofmarinelitterhassteadilygrownworse,therehasbeenrenewedinterestindeposit-returnfortherecoveryofsingle-usebeveragecontainers.Thesesystemsseecustomerspayasmalldepositwhentheypurchaseacanorbottle,whichtheygetbackwhentheyreturnthecontainertoacollectionpointforrecycling.Deposit-returnsystems(DRS)areaproventooltocollecthighquantitiesofemptybeveragecontainersforreuseandhigh-qualityrecycling,andarevitaltoachievingacirculareconomy.Over130millionpeopleintheEUaloneliveincountrieswithdeposit-systems.It’salsousedinmostCanadianprovinces,10USstates,andlargeportionsofAustralia.ThelatestjurisdictiontoimplementacontainerdepositprogramwasNewSouthWales(NSW)onDecember1,2017.Otherjurisdictionsthathaveannouncedplansfor,orthathaveimplementedcontainerdepositlawsbutwhoseprogramsarenotyetoperationalandthereforenotincludedinthisreport,includeScotland,Fiji,Guam,Turks&Caicos,Barbados,WesternAustralia(expectedtostartbetween1July2019and1January2020),andQueensland(expectedtostarton1November2018).AtatimewhenmoreandmorejurisdictionsareconsideringtheimplementationofDRStoachievemandatedrecyclingtargetsandreducelitter,CMConsulting(inassociationwithReloopPlatform)ispleasedtoreleasethefirsteditionofDepositSystemsforOne-WayBeverageContainers:GlobalOverview(2016).Thisdocumentprovidesacomprehensivesummaryof39depositsystemsindifferentjurisdictionsaroundtheworld.Eachdepositmarketprofiledinthisreviewisstructuredalongthefollowingkeyparameters(whereinformationisavailable):
