Mission….

The Reason We Exist

The mission of the Church Building & Loan Fund (CB&LF) is to assist congregations younger than 30 years, as well as renewing congregations of any age, who are planning to buy either a first house of worship or a land site, or who want to build, renovate, or refinance their church building, meeting house, school, parsonage and/or other church buildings.

Mission….

The Reason We Exist

CB&LF’s predecessor entities were founded by congregations and leaders who were intentional about the role and purpose of these first building societies: to leverage financial assets to advance the mission and ministry of the church. A core guiding principle for CB&LF today is to expand upon this tradition ofleveraging assets for tangible, public, measurable impact in the advancement of the mission and ministry of the church.

Return on InvestmentThe Reason We

Deploy Assets for MissionWhat does it mean to “deploy assets for mission?

Invest to generate a return that grows the economy (realm, kin_dom)

of God.

Will it grow the Fund (increasing our capacity to advance mission)? Will it advance the CB&LF Mission Implementation Strategy/2015-2017?

Will it advance the mission of CB&LF?

Will it advance the mission of the UCC, the Great Commission, the broader Gospel Mission, the economy (realm, kin_dom) of God?

What’s Mission

Got to Do with It?In a post-Christian, post-modern, “un-Church” era,

to disengage from mission is to accelerate our irrelevance.

Most congregations have been slow to connect Mainline trends with local mission, vision and

strategy. Church financial institutions have been even slower.

For congregations to avoid 100% deployment of assets for mission is to take first place in the race to

oblivion.

Page 14: Deploy Assets for Mission

How should church leaders interpret these trends?

…the church is in a “Good Friday” season. We must live into the reality that…

Page 15: Deploy Assets for Mission

During this “Good Friday” season…We need to stop whispering, worrying, and whining.

Good Friday was “good” because of what came after…

2. In 2050, what kinds of spaces will Christ followers need to live out the mission and values of the church?

3. How can we deploy assets for mission today to co-create the church for a new tomorrow?

1. How may we co-create a “new thing” with our buildings and financial assets?

Let us grapple with Resurrection questions:

In 2050, what kinds of spaces will Christ followers need to live out the mission and

values of the church?

Innovate. Fail often. Try: • new uses• mixed uses• partnerships• “strange

bedfellows”.

Nothing is a mistake. There is no win and no fail. There is only make.
