Solution

The PAK system was selected to fulfill the requirements.

Two 528 channel systems (a total of 1056 channels) were

successfully integrated, tested and commissioned. Each

system consists of eleven synchronized mainframes, test

operation and analysis workstations, 28 TByte NAS for shared

storage and an automated tape backup library.

Contained within two standard racks, each system provides

528 channels sampled at 204.8 kHz with 24-bit resolution while

maintaining precise phase across the entire configuration.

Embedded controllers providing intelligence and local storage

to each mainframe guarantee data security in the event of

communication or power loss. Integrated signal conditioning

providing high powered ICP® current (for long cable runs),

voltage and accurate DC measurements are supported and

augmented by buffered analog outputs.

An optimized computing environment was delivered to

address the requirement of fast and reliable data handling and

redundant data storage.

At a glance

• Industry first data management to guarantee measurement

security

• and integrity for immediate and/or later analysis in various

forms

• Modular and scalable hardware supporting a wide range of

measurement parameters with precise channel-to-channel

synchronization

• Aerospace formatted graphics, hardcopy reports and quickly

accessible data for review and export, e.g. Time Histories,

PSD, FFT, Swept Sine, FRF

• Seamless integration within existing test environments,

cabling, signal conditioning, monitoring and control

equipment

Customer

Lockheed Martin in Sunnyvale, CA is part of Lockheed’s Space

Systems Company which focuses on businesses ranging from

missile defense systems, to surveillance, to human space flight.

Most notable products include human space flight systems; a

full range of remote sensing, navigation, meteorological and

communications satellites and instruments; space observatories

and interplanetary spacecraft; laser radar; fleet ballistic

missiles; and missile defense systems, e.g. NASA’s MPCV

(formerly Orion) and Space Shuttle External Tank.

The measurement and recording of high speed data

for aerospace and defense systems under test – in an

accurate and timely manner – is not a simple engineering

task. As channel requirements increase, the management

and data security of large files, along with the sharing and

reporting of results quickly, are examples of challenges

facing engineers.

Müller-BBM VibroAkustik Systeme GmbH

Müller-BBM VibroAkustik Systeme provides versatile solutions

with uncompromised dynamic data recording, monitoring,

analysis and data handling.

Tight partnerships with the aerospace, defense, automotive

and aviation companies together with our acknowledged

engineering expertise result in path breaking solutions. These

solutions seamlessly integrate into laboratory, production and

field environments worldwide.

Requirements

• Scalable, modular hardware for laboratory and portable use

• Data security from power loss and computer anomalies

• 204.8 kHz sampling with high local and host data throughput

• Embedded system processing and data recording

• Signal conditioning for a broad range of transducers

• Simultaneous support of different transducer types with

independent sampling rates

• High precision channel-to-channel synchronization

• Buffered analog outputs

• Multi-channel DAC outputs

• High speed, automated data analysis, reporting and export

• Application specific graphics display and customizable

reports

Challenge

High level acoustic testing of components, sub-systems or

complete spacecraft all present similar engineering challenges

along with the required test operation precautions. Depending

on the test item, accurate instrumentation, signal conditioning,

data acquisition, recording and reporting of hundreds of

channels may be necessary. Loss of any data and over testing

is never acceptable.

Equally important is the accurate simulation of the acoustic

environment to assure over testing and excessive product

fatigue is avoided. Closed looped excitation, measurement and

control of the environment must include numerous fail-safes

while equalization to the pre-defined test levels is achieved

quickly with precision.

Solution

NASA’s Vibration & Acoustics Test Facility (VATF) provides

acoustic, vibration and shock testing of spaceflight hardware to

ensure that functionality is not impaired by severe launch and

landing environments. Testing capabilities includes a Sonic

Fatigue Laboratory (SFL) with a reverberant chamber providing

vibroacoustic structural testing to high sound pressure levels for

components and smaller sub-systems. The larger reverberant

chamber of the Spacecraft Acoustic Laboratory (SAL) provides

vibroacoustic structural testing of large structures to high

sound pressure levels with floor dimensions of 38.83’ x 47.33’

(11.8 m x 14.4 m) and a ceiling height of either 32.67’ (10 m) or

75’ (22.9 m).

Created in a partnership with Wyle Laboratories and Müller-

BBM VibroAkustik Systeme, the Wyle ACS has performed

numerous, successful acoustics tests at NASA Johnson Space

Center.

Based on the strong foundation of Müller-BBM’s PAK system

and Wyle’s expertise in the development, installation and

support of acoustic reverberation rooms worldwide the Wyle

ACS provides unparalleled equalization, control and product

security. A time domain, nonlinear control algorithm optimizes

each drive update to achieve pre-defined test levels and overall

sound pressure levels (OASPL) quickly and safely without

over test. Chamber modulators are driven by four integrated,

user-definable, band limited drive signals. Dedicated output

DSPs improves system dynamic range and control across

the complete demand spectrum. Non microphone signals

such as acceleration and strain are measured and processed

independently while all signals are digitally recorded in parallel,

for post processing and archiving.

At the core, the PAK system provides comprehensive data

management, customizable graphical interfaces, posttest

processing and reporting. Independently the Wyle ACS is a

powerful data acquisition system capable of supporting various

laboratory signal processing and recording needs.

At a glance

• Fast, accurate and precise equalization and control

• Very fast, 0.25 second drive updates (loop time)

• Industry first software and hardware product fail-safes

• Simultaneous measurement and processing of a wide range

of signals i.e. microphones, accelerometers, strain gauges

and more ...

• Dynamic data acquisition operation for non-control

applications

• Aerospace formatted graphics, hardcopy reports and data

quickly available for review and export

• Seamless integration within existing test environment, cabling, signal

conditioning, monitoring and data acquisition equipment

• Industry standard, modular and upgradeable hardware

• Enterprise data management to guarantee data security and integrity for

immediate and/or later analysis in various forms

Customer

NASA Johnson Space Center Engineering has over 45 years

of combined expertise in design of space vehicle systems,

combining structural design, analysis, testing, dynamic loads

analysis, and performance and materials evaluations for

manned and unmanned space-faring vehicles. Specialty areas

such as reliable pyrotechnics, power systems and quality,

fluids management, batteries performance, cockpit designs,

radiation-hardened avionics, space environmental effects,

thermal protection systems, and reliable software are integrated

at the vehicle level for system level optimum performance.

Requirements

• Time domain closed loop octave control

• Less than 0.5 second drive updates (loop time)

• Support for up to 16 control microphones

• Simultaneous support for up to 64 additional dynamic signals

• User definable processing of all channels

• Up to four band limited, controllable drive outputs

• Manual octave equalization tuning

• Sampling rates to 102.4 kHz, 24 bit per channel

• High precision channel-to-channel synchronization

• Hardware and software system fail-safes

• High speed, automated data analysis, reporting and data

export

• Field configurable, modular, upgradeable hardware

Recognizing that most high level acoustic tests are only

one minute in length, the amount of time to achieve pre

and full test levels is critical.

Minimizing this equalization time while not over-testing,

reduces the test item’s exposure to high sound pressure

levels and unnecessary fatigue.
