what can i doExplore walking trails - There are some great options for both short walks and longer treks. Follow the popular Summit Track to the volcanic crater and peak, or explore the network of tracks listed on the next page. You can even walk all the way to Motutapu Island.

Visit Bach 38 Museum - Rangitoto was once home to three bach communities. In 1937, there were 140 baches on the island, but many have now been demolished. Visit the fully restored Bach 38 Museum, and stroll around the surrounding community for a glimpse into the past.

Duck into lava caves - 200 metres from the top of Rangitoto is the best detour on your way to the Summit – lava caves! Bring a torch to navigate the twisting tunnel hollowed out from flowing lava.

Wander a pōhutukawa forest - Rangitoto is home to the world's largest pōhutukawa forest. This special native tree blooms crimson red flowers in December and is aptly dubbed New Zealand's Christmas tree.

4wd road-train experienceJourney through rugged lava crop on board a 4WD road-train, while learning all about the 600-year-old volcano’s fiery past. You’ll arrive at the base of the summit, and from there it’s just a short climb to the very top for epic views.

Level of fitness: A reasonable level of fitness is required for the walk to the summit. Please note there are approximately 300 boardwalk steps. The walking part of this tour may not be suitable for pregnant women, or people recovering from surgery.

rangitoto walking tracksA SUMMIT TRACK

The most popular walk on the island climbs through lava fields to the summit peak, offering panoramic views of the Hauraki Gulf and Auckland.

A. Lava Caves Track (15 min one way): A signposted diversion leads to lava tunnels. Allow 45 minutes to reach the caves, explore (with a torch!) and return via the same track.

B. Crater Rim Loop (20 min loop): At the summit, follow the loop track to circle the crater before your descent on the Summit Track.

B COASTAL TRACK TO ISLINGTON BAY WHARF

Walk between Rangitoto Wharf and Islington Bay along a varied track with lush coastal forest and rugged lava fields. See historic bach settlements and WWII military sites along the way.

C SHIPWRECK WALK (BOULDER / WRECK BAY TRAIL)

Located at the northern side of the island is an old ship graveyard visible at low tide. Please note, the timings are from the track entrance at Islington Bay Road. You can add this track to your walk after completing the Summit Track or the Coastal Track. This track requires sturdy footwear.

D KOWHAI GROVE

From Rangitoto Wharf, walk through a grove of New Zealand’s native kowhai trees, which bloom brilliant yellow flowers in the spring.

E KIDNEY FERN GLEN

Shortly after the start of the Summit Track, turn left to see native kidney fern. They look delicate but can tolerate the harsh growing conditions of lava fields.

F LIGHTHOUSE AT MCKENZIE BAY

McKenzie Bay Road passes mangroves, historic baches, a black back gull colony, and an old quarry site. End at a sandy beach perfect for swimming and see the historic beacon lighthouse built in the 1880s.

unique volcanic island

discover rangitoto island

The volcanic Rangitoto Island erupted from the sea approximately 600 years ago - making it the last and largest volcano to be formed in the Auckland volcanic field.

Rangitoto is one of the most iconic landmarks in Auckland's city skyline and a must-do day out. Climb to the summit or take a 4WD road-train to the top for epic views.

Where is it? Sitting 8 km northeast of Auckland, Rangitoto’s distinctive symmetrical cone rises 260 metres over the Hauraki Gulf. Rangitoto is connected to Motutapu Island by a causeway.
