Message from the Director of Athletics & Recreation
Greetings new and returning student-‐athletes, On behalf of myself, and the entire KPU department of athletics and recreation, welcome to the KPU Eagles family and a new PACWEST/CCAA season! While introducing the KPU Surrey City Centre project, KPU President Dr. Alan Davis spoke to KPU’s future. He said the university has a vision to become bigger, bolder, better. I truly believe that our department of athletics and recreation are well on our way in embodying this mission. You will notice that we have not only new faces, but also new facets within our department. I extend a warm welcome to our new and returning head coaches, coaching and administrative staff members. This summer we established our first Athletic Therapy Clinic, managed by our new Head Athletic Therapist. Our KPU athletes will be able to receive in-‐house therapy, assessment, referral, and treatment options at home on the Surrey Campus. We also established our own communications portfolio, managed by our Sports Information & Marketing Coordinator. These areas join our existing coaching and administrative staff to provide you, our KPU Eagles athletes, with a multidisciplinary team ready to make your athletics experience the best it can be. I am also proud to announce the establishment of our ‘Eagles Soar’ program, a joint initiative between the KPU Eagles and the KPU Learning Centre. Our first-‐year student athletes will register with the program and receive free support with their academics to ensure they are on the path to success in their inaugural university year. I wish you all the best as you make your mark as an Eagle in the 2014/15. Enjoy your time with us; play strong and play smart. With kind regards, David Kent Director of Athletics & Recreation

Objectives of the Interuniversity Athletic Program The primary objective of the KPU Eagles varsity athletics program is to assist students’ progress toward their personal, academic and athletic potential by providing high quality interuniversity athletic experiences in a manner which will help them build self-‐esteem and develop the life-‐long qualities of leadership, fair play, respect, self-‐ discipline and perseverance. Some specific objectives of the interuniversity athletics program would include those associated with helping student-‐ athletes:
• Develop a high level of sport specific performance and physiological fitness. • Learn new skills under the direction of qualified and experienced coaches. • Learn teamwork and co-‐operation with other individuals. • Learn the value of self-‐control and fair play. • Learn how to lose gracefully and win modestly. • Develop lifetime friendships through participating in a program that tests courage, strength,
self-‐discipline, perseverance, performance and the ability to co-‐operate. • Meet individuals from other communities and colleges and broaden the athletic, cultural and
social horizons of the participants through association with those individuals. • Appreciate and respect the athletic abilities and skills of other individuals. • Cultivate respect for officials, opponents and spectators through the promotion of Fair Play
principles. • Achieve both team and individual success.
About the KPU Eagles In 2014/15 the KPU Eagles Department of Athletics & Recreation enters its 14th season of interuniversity competition. Student-‐Athlete Social Media Usage Guidelines In recent years, Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Instagram, Snapchat, and other social networking sites have become key tools in personal and professional communications. As a student-‐athlete, there is potential for you to be tagged in various KPU Eagles posts or pictures through our social media outlets as well as an opportunity for you to retweet, ‘like’, or share material that KPU publishes. This participation is meant to promote the KPU Eagles programs, athletes, and coaches; but it does come with responsibilities. KPU becomes a public figure, and all members are accountable for all actions and portrayal online, therefore it is extremely important that you maintain a professional social media image. Student-‐athletes and coaches may not be aware that third parties including the media, faculty, staff and future employers can easily access their profiles and view all personal information. This includes all
10
pictures, videos, comments and posters. Inappropriate material found by third parties affects the perception of you as a student-‐athlete, the Athletic Department and KPU. Participating in Social Media Commenting on features that appear on KPU’s website or newsfeeds, such as Facebook and Twitter, to promote intelligent discussion are acceptable within the KPU community. By commenting, you agree to four principles of commenting:
• Be Legal. You should not post comments that are libelous, defamatory, obscene, pornographic, abusive or contain otherwise illegal content. Please do not post pictures, videos, comments or posters that:
o Condone drug related activity. This includes but is not limited to images that portray the personal use of marijuana, and drug paraphernalia
o Do not post alcohol-‐related content
• Be Respectful. You should not threaten or abuse, written, verbally, or otherwise, other commenters or authors. You should not make other commenters feel unsafe or unwelcome.
o Do not post threats of violence or derogatory comments in reference to any person(s)’s age, race, gender, gender-‐identity, religion, ability, or sexual orientation.
o You should keep your language relatively appropriate for a university community
• Be Relevant. Your comments should be on-‐topic and not self-‐promoting. “Spam” comments and advertising are strictly forbidden. Comments should encourage discussion about important issues to the university community, as well as promote an educational and positive experience.
o Be Aware. KPU reserves the right to use, copy, transmit, excerpt, publish, distribute, publicly
display, publicly perform, create derivative works of, host, index, cache, tag, encode, modify and adapt in any form or media now known or hereinafter developed, any comment posted by you to kpu.ca/eagles or any other site owned by or controlled by KPU.
Protect Yourself Online For your own safety, please keep the following recommendations in mind as you participate in social networking websites:
• Set your security settings so that only your friends can view your profile. • Do not post your email, home address, local address, telephone number(s), or other personal
information as it could lead to unwanted attention, stalking, identity theft, etc. • Be aware of who you add as a friend to your site – many people are looking to take advantage of
student-‐athletes or to seek connection with student-‐athletes. • Consider how the above behaviors can be reflected in all Facebook, Twitter or associated
applications. • Be careful what you write in an email and/or text, as it can be forwarded to other individuals.
If you are ever in doubt of the appropriateness of your online public material, consider whether it upholds and positively reflects your own values and ethics as well as those of the Department of Athletics & Recreation and KPU.

Athletic Therapy The KPU Eagles Athletic Therapy Clinic (the Clinic) provides care for varsity programs. The Clinic is used for health resources and referrals, assessments, therapies, and rehabilitation plans for athletes, and is home to the KPU Eagles student trainer program. The Head Athletic Therapist (AT) manages the clinic, as well facilitates, organizes, and implements medical coverage for all practices and games (exhibition and regular season).
About Athletic Therapy Athletic Therapy is the only profession that focuses exclusively on musculoskeletal injuries in athletes and is the most common profession to work with university, National, and professional level athletes in Canada. A Certified Athletic Therapist completes their degree through an accredited institution that includes either a 1-‐3 years of postgraduate studies or 4 years of undergraduate training, and includes the completion of over 1200 clinical and field practical hours. Additionally, they must complete rigorous practical and written exams in both on field and in clinic situations. Clinical treatment is similar to physiotherapy with a focus on high performance athletes and rapid return to play. If you have never worked with an AT before then please ask about it or refer to www.athletictherapy.org
The Clinic The Clinic treats KPU student-‐athletes at no additional fee during clinic hours. The Clinic will provide:
• Sports injury assessment • Active rehabilitation prescription • Injury treatment including soft tissue release, massage, joint mobilizations, ultrasound, IFC,
muscle stimulator and hydrotherapy • Concussion and musculoskeletal injury return to play planning and baseline concussion testing
PLEASE NOTE: Before participating in any game, medical forms and baseline concussion tests must be completed. Student-‐athletes will not be eligible to play until both these forms are done, and this includes any exhibition game where KPU is being represented. The AT will initiate any referrals to the KPU Eagles’ preferred providers network of Physicians and Allied Health Professionals, as well as coordinate the purchase of any required supplies and braces.
Appointments, Hours of Operation, and If Injury Occurs Clinic appointments and hours of operation are available through the KPU Eagles website, all athletes must make an appointment. If a student-‐athlete is injured during a practice, it is their responsibility to sign themself up for the next available time to see the AT. Appointments can be made at the Surrey Campus Fitness Center in person, or by phone 604-‐599-‐2980, between the hours of 8:00am and 8:00pm, Mondays to Fridays. NO VOICEMAIL APPOINTMENTS WILL BE ACCEPTED.
• Appointments are limited. If a student-‐athlete is unable to make an appointment, they must cancel as soon as possible to allow for someone else to take over that spot.
• If an appointment is missed, the head coach of the student-‐athlete’s will be notified. If the spot if not filled a $10 .00 charge will be applied to the team, repeat infractions may result in a student-‐athlete’s privileges being suspended
• Monday morning is reserved for new injuries that happened that weekend • For a new-‐injury sign-‐up please allow for a 40 minute appointment, for a follow up treatment
sign up for a 20 minute appointment
12
• Priority will be given to in-‐season, eligible athletes. Out-‐of-‐season athletes are asked to limit their sign-‐ups unless otherwise directed by the AT
• If there are free appointments are available, student -‐athletes can drop-‐in to follow up on an older injury
If a student-‐athlete gets injured:
• Let the AT or designated student-‐trainer know right away. Many injuries can be treated most effectively if seen as soon as possible.
• Student-‐athletes are required to tell the AT, their student-‐trainer, and Coach if you sustain any injury or sustain a medical condition as per the student-‐athlete handbook and your medical form
• Additional treatment that is needed outside of the part time AT’s hours will be the responsibility of the student-‐athlete and not covered by the Department of Athletics & Recreation. It is recommended student-‐athletes do not opt out of their KSA expended medical benefits plan so that they can use this as well any other extended benefits for their injury needs. Whenever possible the Department will assist with getting priority appointments with sport specific therapists
• The AT must be seen for clearance prior to any return-‐to-‐play following injury, this includes participation in any KPU practice and games. Only KPU-‐designated physicians can clear a KPU athlete to return to contact practice or games to ensure consistent care for student-‐athletes
Student Trainers Student trainers are kinesiology students or recent kinesiology graduates who provide varsity programs with basic injury assessment, first aid, and referrals to the AT. They provide support and communicate athlete health concerns and status between the athlete, coaches, and the AT. They provide on-‐the-‐field/court strapping and taping, and travel with their assigned team and attend all practices and games. In addition to their post-‐secondary studies, they hold basic first-‐aid certification and have completed course work in strapping, taping. Student-‐athletes must keep the AT and student trainer up to date on any medical conditions or injuries that might affect any aspect of their participation in KPU athletics, as per the student-‐athlete handbook and their signed medical form declaration. Practices and Games On the court or field, the AT or designated student trainer:
• Performs pre-‐game taping/strapping, ensures all athletes are medically fit to participate • If a student-‐athlete requires taping, they must arrive to practice or game-‐day warm-‐up at least
30 minutes prior. Student-‐athletes may need to arrive even earlier if multiple players on the team require taping
• Provides First Aid, emergency medical management, and on-‐field/court return-‐to-‐play assessments during games and practices
• Provides post-‐game injury evaluation, treatment planning, referral, ice and recovery
KPU Eagles Concussion Protocol Concussions are mild traumatic brain injuries that occur commonly following a hit to the head, or hard body hit. Most concussions are mild and get better quickly.
13
Concussions that are treated properly with rest and immediate removal from play do not have long-‐term effects. Concussions that are not rested result in long term health effects such as post concussion syndrome, more symptoms with less of a hit, depression, suicide risk and symptoms similar to Alzheimer’s disease and Parkinson’s disease early in life. Second Impact Syndrome can also occur if someone continues to play with a concussion and sustains another hit; this could lead to massive brain damage or death. Due to the serious nature of the long-‐term effect, all suspected concussions must be reported to allow for evaluation. A Sport Concussion Assessment Tool 3 (SCAT3) is the form that is used to evaluate any athlete with a suspected concussion. The AT or student trainer will complete a SCAT3 on a student-‐athlete when deemed necessary, for example: a collision with opponent or ground with head/neck involvement. A SCAT3 may be completed for a witnessed or un-‐witnessed event when student-‐athlete presents or reports symptoms. Concussion signs/symptoms to watch for:
• A student-‐athlete holding their head after a hit • Significant facial injury • Difficulty getting up • Does not complete plays properly • More emotional than usual • Doesn’t act like themselves • Repetitive questioning • Reports ‘feeling out of it’ • Complains of headache, dizziness, pressure in head, and/or nausea
If the SCAT3 results indicate a concussion has been sustained, student-‐athlete will be IMMEDIATELY removed from play. Any new symptoms following a hit to the head is considered a concussion. If symptoms get worse, the student-‐athlete will be sent to hospital immediately. Procedure Following a Concussion:
1. The student-‐athlete, once removed from play, will not participate in any physical activity or training. Initially they will be instructed to rest and not to take any medications (as these may mask a change in symptoms)
2. The student-‐athlete must check-‐in with the AT daily to report any and all changes in their symptoms
3. Once the student-‐athlete has been symptom-‐free for 24 hours and has been cleared by the KPU-‐designated physician, then a graduated Return-‐to-‐Play can begin
PLEASE NOTE: The student-‐athlete will not participate in a full practice or game situation until medically cleared. Return-‐to-‐Play Outline: Each Step is 24 hours apart
1. Light Aerobic Activity (bike or light jog) 2. Anaerobic Activity (Intervals: sprints or on the bike) 3. Sport Specific Exercise/ Non-‐contact practice 4. Full Contact Practice 5. Return to Competition
14
If at any point throughout the Return-‐to-‐Play process the student-‐athlete reports a return of symptoms, then the process will start from the beginning again with rest until 24 hours symptom-‐free. In extenuating circumstances such as a continual return of symptoms then further intervention may be required and evaluation/return to play process will change accordingly. This includes referral to KPU-‐designated physicians. If there are any questions or concerns regarding Athletic Therapy, please do not hesitate to contact the Head Athletic Therapist.
Sport Accident Insurance Coverage It is important for you to have proper medical coverage if you were to get injured. KPU’s student-‐athletes are insured under KPU’s Sport Accident Policy. This policy cannot contravene any Federal or Provincial statutory requirements with respect to hospital or medical plans, nor shall it duplicate any benefits, which are provided under any Federal or Provincial Hospital or Medical Plans, or any other policy providing a reimbursement indemnity. Some student-‐athletes opt out of their KSA coverage as they are covered as a dependent under their parent or guardian’s plan. If you are unsure of your status, please talk to the AT or the KSA office for an appropriate referral.
CCES Anti-‐Doping Program Student-‐athletes are required to complete a Canadian Centre for Ethics in Sport (CCES) anti-‐doping seminar for each year of athletic participation. This is a mandatory requirement for CCAA athletic participation. These sessions are held prior to the beginning of each athletic season. All student-‐athletes must sign a University Consent Form in which the student-‐athlete consents to random testing for substances banned by the CCES. By signing the consent form, student-‐athletes agree to submit any and all tests ordered by the CCAA in order to detect unauthorized substance use and practices. This consent allows for the limited release of test results, as outlined in the CCAA procedures, as a condition of the student-‐athlete’s eligibility. All student-‐athletes enrolled at KPU on a team competition or practice roster may be subject to CCES testing. This includes, but is not limited to, rostered athletes, red-‐shirts, academically ineligible, and medically ineligible student-‐athletes.
Prohibited Substances Before student-‐athletes take anything (medications, supplements, vitamins, etc), please visit the site below to avoid taking a prohibited substance that could cause the student-‐athlete, or their program, to become athletically ineligible. Even supplements can include banned substances that are not listed on the label. If anyone has any further questions or are unsure of anything related to prohibited substances, please consult the AT. To review the most up-‐to-‐date prohibited substance list, please visit www.globaldro.com/ or iPhone users can download the WADA app from the app store.
