OBJECTIVE AND MISSION THE PRIME OBJECTIVE :To guide and
prepare the youths of the region and outside the region in such a manner that they are able to get ample scope after the completion of their three-year degree course.
THE MISSION: To prepare each and every student of the department to compete at the National and International level in their parent as well as the elite subjects so that they fully organise themselves to serve the Nation and the society in future.

ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT
Started in the year 1962. Honours course started in 1965. The Zoological Society of Assam, which is now well known as the
Zoological Society of Assam, started in this department in the year 1970.
Course of study: Higher secondary and Degree Pass and Major Courses. In addition there is a certificate course in Bioinformatics in collaboration with DOEACC now N.I.E.L.I.T.
The wall magazine of the Dept. has brought out the 27th issue this year
Space in the Department:3432sq.ft Students have excelled in all fields, academic as well as in other
fields The Department maintains a rich collection of local and exotic fauna
in an effort to develop an Ecotherm Diversity Museum Extension activities with other Universities

The Departmental Library has a stock of nearly 700 books issued regularly to the Major students. There are 48 e-books
The Department has a Research Laboratory.This laboratory has grown as a center of Herpetology and maintains a database of Amphibians and Reptiles of Assam
Dr.Saibal Sengupta ex-faculty is a Research Guide of Gauhati University
Faculties are involved in regular research and are publishing in National and International research arenas with more than 60 publications.
Various Seminars and Popular Talks are held in the Department on a regular basis

ADD-ON COURSES BIOINFORMATICS IS THE ADD ON COURSE
UNDER THIS DEPARTMENT. THE NODAL TEACHER OF OUR DEPARTMENT IS DR.R.BORTHAKUR
OBJECTIVE OF THE CENTRE: Bioinformatics stand at the interface
of molecular biology and information science where it promises to provide critical tools for managing the immense volume of biological information.
DETAILS OF THE COURSE:
The college offers a certified course and a diploma course in Bioinformatics with eligibility 10+2 with biology as subject.
The certified course is executed in collaboration with N.I.E.L.I.T society, Govt of India and diploma course is according to Gauhati University norms with six months and one year respectively.
HERPETOLOGY LAB The herpetological research laboratory of Arya Vidyapeeth
College is recognized as a premier laboratory in the country for carrying out research on different aspects of amphibians and reptiles.
So far, the laboratory has produced more than 70 research papers published in national and international journals of excellence.
Eleven scholars have obtained Ph.D. from this laboratory under Gauhati University and Assam University.
New species have been described from this laboratory(Fejarvarya sengupti).
HERPETOLOGY LAB cont.. Several research projects are completed sponsored by
ASTEC, DST, MoEF, ATREE etc. National and international scholars used to visit the laboratory for research.The laboratory conducted DST sponsored School of Herpetology. Led by Dr. Saibal Sengupta, research workers of this laboratory have conducted collaborative research works with Universiti of Malayasia, Villanova University (USA), Museum fur Naturkunde (Germany), Kyoto University (Japan), Indian Institute of Science, Wildlife Institute of India, Delhi University, North Orissa University, Assam University and Gauhati University.
PRESENT STATURE OF THE RESEARCH LAB
In view of the Superannuation of Dr.Saibal Sengupta, who was the Principal Investigator of the Herpetological Research Laboratory of A.V.C which is housed in the Research room of the Department of Zoology, Dr.Chhandashree Bhuyan HoD jointly with Dr.Jayanta Gogoi,Asst.Prof of the Department of Zoology were appointed In-charge of the Lab vide letter no.AVC/2016/4614 dated 17th September,2016
INSTITUTIONAL BIOTECH HUB: NODAL DEPT. ZOOLOGY(Co-ordinator:Dr.S.Paul)
Initiative launched by Department of Biotechnology, Government of India under the special scheme for North Eastern India.
Purpose: to promote education and research in Biotechnology and to attract young students to build career in different fields of biotechnology.
From 2010 Zoology is the Nodal Dept.GB vide resolution No. 10(a) dated 30/03/2013.

BIOTECH HUB cont… The IBT Hub has conducted Training and Workshops for
both in-house and neihbouring college students in different aspect of the subject Biotechnology.
It has also extended its activity to neighbouring schools through Outreach Programmes on day to day life utility of Biotechnology as well popularising the subject.
It has also established academic linkages to different institutions through invited lectures.
The Hub has also conducted project works of students of neighbouring as well as in- house students besides conducting practicals for BSc and MSc students of the college. Apart from this it has also catered PhD students of Gauhati University

BEST PRACTICES Introduction of Class Representatives(CR)in
Major: This has enabled the smooth functioning of the classroom management in academics as well as extra-curricular fields.
Knowledge halls and theme walls Introduction of Note-making Sessions: After
course completion we have introduced a system of note making in collective groups with the supervision of a Faculty member. Here students bring their own books, take out library books and question papers.This was introduced in 2015 and the results are tremendous.
Induction to the new Department
BEST PRACTICES cont… Introduction of official WhatsApp group: All
the Major Semesters have an official WhatsApp group which enables the HoD to be in contact with the students 24x7. This is the example of optimal and positive use of technology and social networking.
Introduction of Aprons in Practical Classes: From the Session 2016-17 onwards ,it has been made mandatory for the students to wear aprons for safety and cleanliness.
Introduction of F.A Box Keeping in view of the new syllabus.
BEST PRACTICES cont… Introduction of Daily Thoughts: A white
board has been placed in the corridor with the heaviest foot-fall to elucidate on daily thoughts for the anguish young minds. This is maintained by the senior most Major batch.
Introduction of a new name for the Freshmen Social and Parting: The name ZOORYAN has been officially announced for marking the cultural events which will accordingly carry a suffix. Eg., ZOORYAN FRESHERS’ 2016, ZOORYAN PARTING 2016, ZOORYAN CULTURAL RALLY etc.
