Typical Course Summary

50% theory – through lectures and seminars and covering: Clinical skills, study skills, biology, nursing theory, IT, psychology,

sociology, ethics and law, public health Assessments: course work, practicals, examinations, portfolio 50% practice – on clinical placements including an elective experience

in year 2

Note: A five-day week where placements

take place over the 24 hour cycle of care and can include nights and weekends

Seven weeks + annual leave Uniforms provided May be entitled to a NHS bursary

Adult Nursing


Adult Nursing – why?

Provides a holistic approach to caring for adults who have injuries, suffered accidents, acquired disease or have healthcare needs due to old age or infection.

Gives clinical care based on theoretical knowledge to each patient and provides the best individualised care.

Gives the skills to care for adults who have become incapacitated due to old age.

Provides the knowledge to deal with any medical emergencies that can occur within the home, hospital or wider community.

Can go onto specialise in any medical or physical condition for example breast care nurse specialist, pain specialist, general practice specialist and diabetic nurse specialist.


Adult Placements

Adult students work within a 'community of practice', a partnership of healthcare providers within the North East London - allowing you to become familiar with the needs of the local community and its healthcare providers. This includes:

University College London Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust


Adult Nursing Clinical Experience

• Medical and surgical care

• Community care across the lifespan

• Long-term conditions

• Perspectives of critical care

• Collaborative professional practice

• Outpatient and clinic settings

Placements take place in a range of settings such as acute care, GP surgeries, nursing homes, private hospitals, patients’ homes and the community.

There may also be the opportunity for some practice experience in specialist areas outside of these areas


Mental Health Nursing


Mental Health Nursing – why?

Offers the opportunity to care for the patient or client from an holistic perspective

Delivers both practical nursing care as well as providing social and psychological care

Encourages the formation of close therapeutic relationships with clients

Requires YOU, the individual to be open to your own and others’ feelings

Be able to develop relationships with others, using your personality and integrity

To achieve all of the above the Mental Health student must have excellent listening and observational skills


East London NHS Foundation Trust

• Large specialist Mental Health Trust covering the London boroughs of Tower Hamlets, Hackney and Newham

• Wide range of community, outpatient and inpatient services to children, young people, adults of working age and older adults

• Specialist areas include: – Forensic mental health– CAMHs– Early interventions services

Children’s Nursing


Children’s Nursing – why?– Work in partnership with families and

carers to maintain the health of children

– Provide nursing care for children who are ill in a variety of hospital and community settings

– Has the skills and ability to recognise children as individuals and be skilled at building relationships

– Requires excellent communication skills

– Be technically competent at delivering nursing care and be

– Proficient at teaching and educating children and their families
