Wishes to be instrumental in improving the resilience of the MiningIndustry in South Africa by:• Investigating some of underlying causes of the under
performance of Mining in South Africa• Researching possible ways of addressing these.• Collaborating with other organisations working on related topics• Sharing the findings of integrated bodies of research conducted
by UP.
24
The University of PretoriaThe University of Pretoria
Has therefore decided to• Establish a Mining Resilience Research Institute (MRRI)• Conduct Research, initially in three areas (to serve as pilot
projects), which will refine its offering and demonstrate the powerof an integrated approach.
• "Distressed Mining Communities" project work done under theauspices of the Office of the President

ConclusionConclusion
34
• The Department is a very healthy state in terms of new initiatives, quality staff and quality students
• The Department will boast with world class facilities in the very nearfuture
• Industry support has increased over the last few year and is expectedto continue
• Non technical skills including M&L as part of the curriculum has nowestablished itself as a valuable contributor to our students’ miningcareers
• The MRRI I predict will in future be a very important facility in terms ofthe contribution it will make in helping to solve the industry problems
• Quality education and research are not negotiable

• The University of Pretoria in supporting all our initiatives andinterventions
• My staff for supporting me in all the activities that we are currentlyinvolved with
• All the industry contributors for whom without their support none of ourprojects would have been possible, including the METF, SACMA,AMMSA, MQA and the SAIMM
• SOMP agreeing to allow us to host the SOMP 2014 conference inSouth Africa, indeed a great privilege
• To my family supporting me in tough times“The dream of yesterday is the hope of today and the reality of tomorrow”
