OUTREACH PROGRAM FOR HIGH SCHOOL TEACHERS
“Exploring science through Hands on Activities” An outreach program was organised to
High school teachers on 30th July, 2019 by Departments of Chemistry, Biochemistry and
Microbiology funded by DBT-Star college scheme. The theme of this program was
“Exploring science through hands on Activities”. A total of 32 High School Teachers from
various government and private schools took active participation in this outreach program.
The program started at 9.30 with a formal inauguration by Air.cmdre (Retd). J.L.N. Sastry,
Vice Chairman, BVB Kendra, Prof.Y Ashok, principal, Bhavans Vivekananda College and
Dr. Anuradha, Coordinator, DBT-Star college scheme. They briefed on importance of Hands-
on activities for science teachers. All the teachers were grouped in to three batches and
assigned to three departments Chemistry, Biochemistry and Microbiology where they were
trained on different experiments proposed. Department of Chemistry trained teachers on
Green chemistry methods. The experiments included were Use of Curcumin instead of
Nessler’s reagent for testing the presence of ammonium ion; use of Thioacetamide in place of
Hydrogen sulphide for testing Cations and Microwave synthesis of Benzoic acid from
Benzamide. Experiments included in Biochemistry are Qualitative test for alpha amylase
from saliva, Preparation of blood smear for differential count of leukocytes and Blood
grouping. Also, cardiac cycle was demonstrated to the teachers by model display. Hands on
activities in Department of Microbiology emphasized on Staining of bacteria by simple
staining, Lactophenol cotton blue staining of fungi, Observation of root nodules for bacteroid
zones and Methylene Blue reduction test for testing the quality of Milk. Also, the department
took initiative in bringing awareness on Foldscope-a paper microscope that comes at an
affordable and cheaper price to all the schools. All the teachers got hands on training in the
experiments and were highly appreciated. The program ended with Valedictory program at
4.00 by distribution of certificates to all the participants.

Outreach Program for School Children on “Awareness on Vaccination”
An outreach program “Awareness on Vaccination” was organized by department of
Microbiology on 20th July 2019. It was conducted to create awareness on different types of
Vaccines for school students of Zilla parishad boys High School, Malkajgiri. Students of
MSc. Microbiology final year presented vedio on history of vaccine preparation, animated
PowerPoint presentations on small pox and rabies vaccines and an oral lecture on Hepatitis.
In order to make the concept of Vaccine more appealing to school children, M.Sc students
presented skit on school stage on Rabies and polio vaccination significance. There was an
enthusiastic response from school students as they felt that the information was very useful in
understanding the concept of Vaccination.

Chitrakoot Vidyashram, Sainikpuri on 28.7.2018. Students of class 8th,9th and 10th were
given awareness on the significance of the Bacteria, Viruses and Fungi involved as agents of
food spoilage , food borne illness and food fermentation. M.Sc Microbiology students have
given lectures and demonstrated various microorganisms. An overview of probiotic foods
was also part of the lectures.

Report of ASRao Award council –Science Talent Search -summer camp/Out reach
Programme
Department of Microbiology had conducted five day(27th May – 1st of June) summer camp
/Outreach programme in biology for shortlisted school children of 9th& 10th standard in
Science Talent search for AS Rao Award programme . This was organized Dr.Nageswar Rao
and other council members at Vigyan concept school at Miyapur. Dr.K.Anuradha, Head,
Department of Microbiology and a senior faculty Dr.J.Sarada organized the programme with
two supporting personnel Ms. Gayathri and Mr.Srininvas for Biology students. Student
participants were from Government and private schools in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh
and were very keen in taking up higher education in Biology.
27th Morning, first day after the inaugural session, 20 students opted for biology programme
were taken to the Biology lab and conducted an orientation on the programme. They were
introduced to the basics of Microbiology and demonstrated with the methods of cultivation of
microorganisms and their observation using microscopes. Students were asked to get samples
for isolation and observation purpose. Afternoon they were demonstrated with extraction of
DNA from onion.
Inaugural session Qualitative ananlysis of Carbohydrates
Day 2 started with qualitative analysis of carbohydrates a colour based analysis of detecting
sugars from daily used cereals, pulses and flours, fruits and vegetables .Students performed
the tests with the help of flow chart and a solved a puzzle at the end to check their
understanding.
Day 3 children identified microorganisms isolated from water, soil and air samples collected
by them by simple and differential staining procedures. They were taught with handling
microscopes and preparation of slides. Students played dumsherards using scientific terms.
Observation of Microbes under Microscope Qualitative lipid analysis
Day 4 Students carried out qualitative analysis of lipids –like solubility, test for saturation,
saponification and cholesterol. Different types of oils and fats were analysed by students.
Quiz was conducted on the qualitative tests what they have learnt.
Day 5 Children did report writing summarizing their activities and presented their
observations to the trainers.children were made to play scientific anthakshari and solve the
riddles in science.
Poster and report writing Group participated in the Programme

Outreach Program
Bhavan’s Vivekanada college,Department of Microbiology on Saturday organized an event
“Meet the Scientists” for science teachers and students at +2, UG and PG levels on, 27th
January 2018. This event was a part of the outreach program organized by the International
Congress on Cell Biology 2018,Hyderabad. This was the first-ever joint meeting of FCB
(International Federation for Cell Biology), APOCB (Asian Pacific Organization for Cell
Biology), and the Indian Society of Cell Biology (ISCB). The ICCB was organized by Centre
