Project Title How is fashion changing and how has it changed?

Section 1: Rationale (approx. 150 words)

The idea I want to do for my project is to create a radio piece on how fashion is and has changed, especially with the way they advertise. I want to explore how this influences the public and how they view themselves. The most important aspect of this project is making sure it is written and recorded in the right style as well as it being entertaining and informative for it to interest and capture the audience’s attention.

Section 2: Project Concept (approx. 200 words)

The concept for this project is to create a radio piece, answering the questions of “How is fashion changing and how has it changed?” The aim of this is to inform the audience of what is happening and the affect it can have on people.

The influence for this project came from my passion of radio and my interest in fashion, especially with

the way it is advertised.

The research that I will be partaking includes; Primary and secondary research as well as quantitative and

qualitative research. Meaning the research method that I will be using are; surveys, interviews, online and

literature. The research will be on fashion and how it has changed, physically in style and the way it is now

advertised. I will also research into the affect fashion advertisements how on the audience. The research

will also be on radio and the roles within the industry such as; editor, producer and presenter This will all

be relevant to my project as it will give me extra information which will help the end result.

The target audience I will be aiming for within this project is young adults with an age range of, 17 to 25.

My role within this project will be the host, script writer, researcher, editor and producer. The technical

requirements within in this project will be; recorder or radio studio to record the show, an editing

program like audition to edit the final product. Another requirement will be to be able to write a script

properly and in the best way.

Section 3: Evaluation (approx. 150 words) The evaluation will be shown in many ways. The first one being a weekly blog post to show my development of UNIT 13, this will also help me keep track of my schedule and show whether I am on track with everything. Through my weekly blog post I will receive feedback from my tutor and my focus group for my evaluation, to see the areas that need improvements. During my final evaluation of UNIT 13 I will consider the original idea and use comparisons, this will be to see how the final outcome appears related to what I had hoped for. I will also listen

Introduction

This project portfolio is a report of my final major project for my second year of UAL

Diploma in Print and Journalism. This project is a radio talk show about how fashion is and has

changed through the years, regarding advertisement as well as physical appearances. The first

chapter of this portfolio shows the background of my project by starting with information about

myself and the skills I have learnt throughout the two years of this course. It also shows who and

what has inspired me through the years and how that has helped me come to my final major project.

This chapter explains what my project is about and why it is important, then concludes with my

research plan.

The Background of my Project

What is it that makes me do my project?

I have decided to do a radio talk show for my final major project because radio has always been a passion of mine and I want to challenge myself more on producing and editing in a certain format that is relevant to the type of radio show I want. I wanted to do the talk show on fashion and the way it has changed through the years, especially with advertisement because fashion and the way it is portrayed by the audience is something I have always been interested in.

My personal experiences that influence my choices (idea for the project, my role in the project, how it relates to my future career)

For the past two years I have been doing work experience at a radio show which is something that has influenced my choice of doing a radio talk show, especially because it is something that interests me and I have developed some skills through working at the radio show, for example like producing and setting up a show before it airs which are both skills I will take forward for this project.

I decided to do my talk show about fashion and the way it has changed through the years because fashion has always been a passion of mine and I wanted to challenge my writing skills by writing about something that I have not before.

My role within the project will be to, research, write, present, produce and edit the radio talk show. This is something I will take on board and remember in the future as I would like to go into something to do with radio. So I will take in everything that has to be done and practice all the skills that are needed within a radio talk show to develop them for the future.

What is the basic premise of my project?

The main idea for this project is to see how fashion has and is changing, regarding advertisement and how this affects the audience, if it does at all. Out of this I hope to learn what different people think of fashion advertisement and whether it should be changed.

What do I seek to achieve and how it relates to my target audience?

What I want to achieve through this project is an educational and interesting radio talk show that

clearly shows what the topic is about and gives a variety of opinions. I hope for my radio piece to

show people the way fashion has changed and how its advertisement can affect people. This relates

to my target audience because it is something that happens all around their generation every day.

They might be able to learn or even relate with some of the things spoken about as I will be doing

vox pops and interviews with people of the age of my target audience to make it more personal.

What did I learn on my course?

These blog post below demonstrate the skills I have learnt throughout the two years of this course,

from writing to working programs like Photoshop and InDesign.

Year One –

In the first year I learnt many new skills from poetic devices to how to write a review. These helped

me improve my writing and learn what different ways I enjoy writing in, like poetry, reviews and

storytelling. I also learnt how to use Photoshop by creating different posters and editing photos to

practice the skills I had learnt.

This blog post has interviewing and effective questioning on it, which has helped me know how to go

about interviewing someone and getting the best answers I can. This is a good skill to have within

radio.

Year Two –

Within the second year we went more into depth of writing and the different styles, whilst also

learning how to write scripts and the different types. In the second year I also learnt more skills

within Photoshop, InDesign and Illustrator, becoming more familiar with the programs.

In these blog posts are when we learnt about all kinds of script writing and radio. This helped me a

lot with the knowledge I now have for the industry as I now know what kind of script needs to be

written for which certain radio show.

https://rachelboswelljournalism.wordpress.com/2017/12/03/unit-9-week-6-greg/

Compared to when I first started this course, my knowledge and skills within the industry have

improved massively. I now know how to work programs such as; InDesign, Photoshop and Illustrator.

My writing as also improved since I started as I have now learnt new styles and different ways to edit

my work to make it the best it can be. All of these skills can be shown within my blog posts.

What is my project about? Fashion is forever changing and sometimes it is hard to keep up with what is in and what is

not. Another thing about fashion that has been changing is the way it is advertised to the

audience. Advertisements have more of an effect on people than many might know. It

makes some people see themselves different. The radio talk show I will be producing for my

final major project will be a way to show people how fashion as changed and the

repercussions it may have on young adults. I will be asking some young people their opinion

on how they think fashion advertisements can or is effecting the youth culture. I wanted to

do this for my project to help people understand how and why some advertisements affects

others because it is something that happens daily and I believe it is important to be

educated within it.

My role within this project is researcher, writer, producer, presenter and editor.

Why my project is important?

I want to do my project on fashion and the way it is advertised because it is something that is all

around us and something that is ever changing. To do my project on this is to understand why they

advertise in that certain way and what effect it can have on some people. Writing this piece as a

radio show I think it will help entertain my target audience as well as inform and educate them on

what is happening and how fashion use to be advertised. This makes my project important as I

believe the public should know about something that is all around them and the effect it can have.

My Research Plan

Table 3- My Research Plan

FMP - RESEARCH PLAN No of Words

Interest/Topic/Theme 150

When it comes to the production of my project I will be researching into a vast variety of subjects and sources to help me achieve my final product. I will research into my chosen medium which is radio. I will research all aspects of radio, how it is put together, the roles within radio and listen to current radio shows to see how they do it. I will also research into my theme which is fashion, this will help me know what I will be talking about within my radio talk show. Throughout this research I plan on using different sources such as; books, magazines, Internet, surveys and focus groups.

Why is it important? - Importance 100 The importance of my project is to understand why fashion is advertised in certain ways and the effect it can have on the public, whether it is realistic or not. I also believe it is important to inform/educate the public on what is going on as it is something that happens all around us daily. It is also important for me to demonstrate the skills I already have and develop new ones for the future in radio.

My research question(s) 100 The hypothesis I have decided to research for my report is, “What makes a good radio talk show?” During this I will be asking further questions such as; How fashion has changed and how it is changing, especially within advertisements? How to put an effective radio show together?

Research Design 100

For this project I will be researching into fashion and the way it is advertised, seeing how it has changed throughout the years. I will be collecting all of this data through different types of research such as; online, magazines, books and interviews. The target audience I will be aiming for is 17 to 25, so I will make sure the research is relevant to that certain age group. The skills and techniques needed for this research are; script writing, audio editing, producing and recording.

Literature/Resources Review

Introduction A range of resources from magazines, books, websites and radio programs on radio talk shows and the roles of radio, the professional skills to put a talk show together, the topic of fashion and how it has changed through the years, especially within advertising, provide a basis for my final major project.

Within this chapter I will present an evaluation of different resources I have used for this project and how previous work have influenced me and my further research and development for my final idea for this project. In this chapter I will look at books, magazines and web sources related to the topic of how fashion has changed through the years regarding advertising and the effect this has on the public eye and also the jobs of people already within the radio industry. The chapter will then finish with a conclusion of all the resources that have been use throughout my project.

CONCLUSION - Who/what was my inspiration? /Contextualisation of my study

Work Experience – Penny Williams

For the past two years I have been working with Penny Williams who does her own radio

show on Channel Radio, which is broadcasted online. She is someone that has inspired me

through the years as learning from her has helped me develop my skills and know what is

needed to make a radio show as well as how to put one together.

Radio Presenter – Nicholas Grimshaw Nicholas (Nick) Grimshaw, also known as Grimmy, presently hosts BBC Radio One Breakfast Show. He has been doing it for almost six years now as he took over from Chris Moyles on 12th July 2012. The Radio One Breakfast Show runs from half six in the morning till ten making it a three and half hour show, which has been going for 51 years this year with a total of 6.16 million listeners a week listening to Nick Grimshaws breakfast show. Although, when Nick Grimshaw first took over the show from Chris Moyles there was a big decline in the listeners, making the show get the smallest audience on record at the BBC. It is said to be the lowest the show has had since the first show that was aired in 1967 with Tony Blackburn. Declining to 5.2 million listeners from Chris Moyles 7 million listeners. One of the main reasons for the decline in listeners was the fact that Nick Grimshaw was trying to change the audience from quite an older one that Chris Moyles had built to a younger one that he felt he would be able to appeal to more. This caused listeners to leave when Chris Moyles left, although throughout the years Grimshaw has started to increase his own audience back up. Nick Grimshaw had joined BBC Radio One in 2007. Where he started off presenting the BBC's Youth Stand "Switch" with friend and colleague DJ Annie Mac. He only co-hosted with Annie Mac for a year then moved on to solo host the Radio One's Weekend Breakfast show from

October 2008 to May 2009 before moving again to the 10pm to midnight slot on Radio One which he started 1st June 2009. He continued to do this show for three years before finally taking over Chris Moyles on the Breakfast show in 2012 where he has been labeled the third longest serving presenter of the breakfast show. Grimshaw's first step into radio was when he presented the student radio at Liverpool University, which he attended between 2002 – 2005. He studied Communication and Media Studies but failed his final year. This meant he only graduated with a DipHE rather than a bachelor's degree, however this did not seem to matter as the BBC saw he had potential with presenting. The skills and knowledge required to be radio presenter include good communication and public speaking skills, research and interviewing skills, the ability to work under pressure, a suitable voice for radio, a strong on-air personality and confidence. A job like this requires a high level of creative talent and/or experience. Luckily for most presenters they have an editor who edits the show, if it is pre-recorded or makes sure everything is edited and ready to play before they go live, this means no editing is needed for the presenter to do. Although they may help to put their own input into the editing as it will be their show that it will be appearing on. When creating a successful radio show the presenter has to make sure they have all the research and are prepared for the show. Some shows have themes or certain people in to interview that need to be researched into before the show is aired. Radio shows are most normally a couple of hours long so the presenter needs to make sure the listeners do not lose interest and that they do not keep repeating themselves. Keeping the audience interested in the show for a couple of hours is one of the most important things for a presenter to be aware of as they do not want to lose listeners. Depending on the radio show, most like Nick Grimshaws Breakfast Show, has music played in between topics or just to keep the audience listening. Although, this is a good idea the presenter has to make sure the music is the right kind for the target audience that listens to them otherwise the listeners are more likely to turn off and listen to something else.

Producer – Julie Shepherd Julie Shepherd is a BBC radio producer where she produces Clara Amfo's show, which is The Official Chart Show on BBC Radio One as well as the Radio One Live Lounge. Julie Shepherd applied to five jobs while in University of Bradford, one of them being the BBC which she then got offered the day after she finished University. Although, this job was a researcher at BBC Radio Two, where she ended up working for two years before she had finally had enough and was getting bored. They then announced about Radio 1xtra which Julie Shepherd was very excited about and knew she wanted to be a part of it. She ended up moving from Birmingham where she had lived for three years to London to start her new job at Radio 1xtra. Being a producer is a lot of work and means making sure all the equipment is working properly and the quality of both the sound and the content is up to scratch. A producer has to be listening intently to what is going on around them and on the radio at all times as they have to make sure everything goes smoothly throughout the show. Julie said 'this means knowing what feels right and what to change things. That could mean "too much unfamiliar music or too much chat about one thing." As it is the producer’s job to make sure nothing that goes out is insensitive to the listeners.' A producer also includes operating the technical controls, making sure the sound volume levels and recording software is all working and do not cause any problems for the host of the show. The producers use to be in a control room which was separate from the radio studio by a

window which allowed visual contact but blocked any noise that might have been made by the producer. Although, nowadays this has changed at some radio studios.

Editor – Sara Sands Sara Sands is the editor for the Today show on BBC Radio 4. In 1996 Sara Sands joined The Daily Telegraphy as deputy editor and soon became responsible for the Saturday Edition. She was there for nine years before she was appointed as the first female editor of The Sunday Telegraph in June 2005. However, Sara was then fired as editor from the newspaper in March 2006 which then took her to become Consultant editor at the Daily Mail starting April 2006. It then wasn’t more than two years that she was then named editor-in-chief of Reader’s Digest in February 2008. Sara Sands then left to become the Deputy Editor at London Evening Standard newspaper in 2009 where she soon become Editor of the newspaper in 2012, staying there for another five years before finally becoming the editor of the today show on BBC Radio 4 in 2017. An Editor for radio has to oversee and directs the work of a news team as well as setting and driving the news agenda. For this job there are many skills required. For example, you have to understand and have an instinct of what makes a good news story as well as have good writing and storytelling skills, be able to generate original ideas and know how to communicate with the audience in new creative ways. They also have to be able to use a variety of recording equipment and to be able to operate in different radio studios. I have created a mind map with my main question in the middle. Around the outside is all the ideas and skills I will need to answer it. All the different research techniques and industry examples that I will look into.

Researching into the industry roles have helped as it showed me what skills and jobs are

needed to put a radio show together. However, researching into Nick Grimshaw, the host was the most relevant to me. For example, it showed me how a presenter should be like and what skills were needed to become one, although as interesting as it is to find out how he started off I did not find this that relevant to making a radio show. It also helped me know what professional host are like which I will take into consideration when I record my own show. Although, as interesting as it was to find out about what the editor and producer do I did not find this relevant as I will not be editing or producing the way that the industry

examples do because my show will be pre-recorded not live.

Research Design

Introduction The hypothesis I have decided to research for my report is, “What makes a good radio talk show?” I chose this question to lead my research as I enjoy radio and hope to go into it one day. This question gives me time to go more into the aspects of what makes a good radio talk show and why certain audiences like them so much. There are so many different types of radio show, talk shows and music shows, that I want to know what makes each one different but equally good for their target audiences. With each radio show there are lots of the same skills that need to be learnt and taken on to make it all work together. For example, researching into the topic or person, writing a script to go by, communication skills and a good speaking voice are just a few of the main skills that will be needed to create the final product of a radio talk show.

Throughout this research I will be using many different resources from listening to radio talk show, radio dramas and podcasts to using the internet to find new information on people in the industry and jobs that help make everything happen. I started the research by creating a mind map with my hypothesis in the middle. This will help me pin point all the jobs and skills that are required, making it easier for me to know what I will have to research further into.

I will also be taking it upon myself to do primary and secondary research as this is very vital to my research report. For primary research I will be constructing surveys on a website called survey monkey. This is to get feedback and opinion of the general public which will help me know what people already listen to or what to hear more of. This will be helpful for my FMP as it will give me more information on what my target audience want to hear. I will also hopefully be interviewing people, someone who is from the industry of media or radio as well as some students or general public to get more information, personally on what they think. The last primary research I will be collecting will be talking in focus groups about my ideas and topics and getting first hand feedback from everyone that will help me improve on my work.

The secondary research I will collect will be from listening to radio talk shows, radio dramas and podcasts. I will also use the internet to research into people from the industry and what their job requires them to do. The three people I will research into is a presenter, producer and editor of radio as these are the three main jobs that bring the whole thing together. This will help me see what each person does and how together they can bring the whole radio show together. It will also gain me more knowledge on the industry and professional jobs that go within it.

While looking for all this information I will be prepared for the potential problems that could arise. For example, I may not be able to find the certain information I need but as a student I feel I will have enough resources and people around me to help and guide me in another direction. For this research report I will need to research into my theme as well as the medium I will be doing. The idea for my radio talk show is to talk about the topic of fashion. More specific of how fashion has and is changing as well as how there are shops out there that only sell one size of clothing instead of producing clothes for everyone. This means I will have to research into how fashion as changed and into the stores that only sell one size.

Research Questions The aim of my project is to research into how fashion has changed through the years, especially with

advertising as well as researching into current radio talk shows with how they present topics and if it

has been done before. I hope for my project to inform, entertain and educate my audience about

how advertising of fashion has changed and how it can and is affecting the public. With the main

question I will be asking throughout my project is; “How fashion is and has changed over the years,

Research Design Evolution When I researched my subject I used a variety of primary research methods such as; mind maps,

surveys and focus groups. These all helped me get new information on my subject which I could use

within my project. The surveys and focus groups gave me opinions that I could use within my project

as well as take into consideration.

Target Audience

My chosen target audience for this project is students, aged 17 to 25. I chose this age range because

I feel at this age you are more likely to be interested and affected by fashion choices and how they

are advertised. Another reason why I picked this age group is because there is not a radio talk show

on a channel which is aimed at this age group for them to talk or express their feelings about certain

topics, so I want to create something where young adults can listen or express themselves regarding

a certain topic they are passionate about.

This results from YouGov Profiles shows that most people who are interested in fashion is aged 25 to

30 which does not reach to my chosen target audience although I feel this shows that not many

things are aimed for young adults that might be interested in the topic as well, meaning I will be

doing something unique and new for a younger audience that are interested.

I knew what skills and techniques were required within my project to make a good radio talk show I researched into three industry people who all have different roles within the radio industry. I looked into a host, producer and editor as these three jobs come together to create a radio show and are the jobs I will be doing within my project. The main skills used within editing is knowing how to use an editing program such as Audition or audacity. The skills a producers job is to create content and manage the whole radio process, both recorded and live. They also have to research the topics and generate original ideas for the shows. A host’s skill throughout the show is to make sure they keep the show moving and does not have any quietness. They also need to steer the conversation and make sure it does not go off topic as well as making sure the guests are relaxed and comfortable. Researching into these three industry people helped me learn what skills each one requires which will benefit me when it comes to recording my own show. Production research

Within my radio talk show I plan to have people from my course/focus group to talk so it is more of a conversation than just me talking. I spoke to them during class to figure out the best time for all of us to get together and record as well as giving them time to think of what they would like to say within the show.

o Budget

I did not need to spend any money throughout this project as I will be using the radio room that is located at the college to record my radio talk show.

o Recce research/location needed The only location that was used throughout this project was college or my house where I did

extra work if needed. Otherwise the radio room at college was the main location for my project. o Health and safety research

The health and safety precautions that took place was making sure that the radio room was safe for us to be in. For example, not having anything that we could trip over and no live wires that could harm us. I also asked permission to use the radio room so someone knew where we were and I knew it would be free and quiet to use.

o Props The only props that were used throughout my project was the radio room which had all the microphones and recording device within it, which I had asked the college for permission to use. I also used a USB stick to save all the recordings on which I already owed, so I just brought it in from home.

o Production and Post production

At the beginning of this blog post it explains how we went to a radio station and learnt how everything works, from the script writing to recording and editing the final piece. I have also been doing work experience at a radio show for the past year and a half which has helped me understand the techniques needed within the industry as well as how to put a show altogether.

Research Findings

This project is a radio talk show about how fashion is and has changed through the years, regarding

advertisement as well as physical appearances. Fashion is forever changing and sometimes it is hard

to keep up with what is in and what is not. Another thing about fashion that has been changing is

the way it is advertised to the audience. Advertisements have more of an effect on people than

many might know. It makes some people see themselves different. The radio talk show I will be

producing for my final major project will be a way to show people how fashion as changed and the

repercussions it may have on young adults. I will be asking some young people their opinion on how

they think fashion advertisements can or is effecting the youth culture. I wanted to do this for my

project to help people understand how and why some advertisements affects others because it is

something that happens daily and I believe it is important to be educated within it.

The research methods I have used within this project were mind maps, surveys, magazine and online research. I created mind maps for my hypothesis and my theme. This got me to look deeper into what I will need to research into. It also made me think about all the different techniques and industry examples I will look into throughout my research. .During making the mind maps I thought of some more questions I wanted to ask in addition to my main hypothesis which is, 'what makes a good radio talk show?’ The questions I came up with that I wanted to ask were;

Why do people listen to radio? What do people not like about radio? What makes a good radio host? What do people like most about radio? How much do people listen to radio? What jobs are needed to put a radio show together? What skills are needed?

Some of these questions I managed to answer through my survey that I created. The survey I created consisted of ten questions about radio. The aim of this is to find out what people's opinions on radio are and how much they already know about it. It is also to see what radio they listen to and why, the things they like and don’t like about radio. From this I can include or exclude the elements they have mentioned. For example, music, interviews and topics. The radio show I will be creating has to be appealing, especially for my target audience as if my end product ends up not getting any positive effect or attention from people then I would not have accomplished in making a good radio talk show.

Through online research I found out more information on people within the industry and their jobs with the skills that are required. I looked into three industry people who work within radio, finding out how they got to what they are doing and what skills they were required to have. By doing this it has helped me understand the industry and the roles that go within it. I also looked into radio shows which helped me hear how professional shows sound when they are put altogether. Through a certain magazine I found out information on radio itself and the history behind it all. By doing this I have more knowledge and information on what makes a radio show and how radio got to what it is like today from how it started out years ago. The weaknesses of surveys are that I could end up not having enough responses or people could miss out some questions which can mess with my results when I come to analyse them. The strengths of them are that they give me a public opinion on the subject I am researching into. The weaknesses of online and magazine research is that they could end up not having the right information I need or the information they do have could not be up to date which would not help my findings. The strengths of this research is that they give me a wide variety of information from many places on different areas of the industry.

Data analysis Survey Results -

From my survey results I noticed majority of people listened to Heart, KMFM, Capital or Radio One. This helps me as I can listen to these radio shows and see what they are doing which makes people listen and like them so much. I asked how often people listen to radio and the majority of people listen to it every day while only 25% listen to it once a week. This shows me that people will not want to hear the same old thing on the radio, especially if they listen every day as they will want new and fresh so they do not get bored. From this survey I also wanted to know why people listen to the radio, through this question I found out 58% of people listen to it just for the music with 35% listen to it for music, news, topics and the presenter. This information shows me that most people probably like ether a break from all the talking with some music, especially if they are in the car for a long time. This is something I will keep in mind when recording my own show. One of the main questions I asked was what people think make a good radio show as well as what they do not like about radio. Majority of people said that lively and good presenters with a good sense of humor that have good conversations and topics is something that appeals to the audience. Also a good range of music is something that a lot of people kept mentioning. The main thing people do not like about radio is advertisement as well as over talking about the certain topics. When asking what the audience thinks makes a good radio host their answers were quite similar. For example, good communication and people skills, quick witted, happy and friendly personality, confidence and fluently spoken. These answers will help me going forward with doing my own radio show as I now know what the audience expects from a host when listening as people could get bored and not listen if the presenter has no character to their voice.

Industry example –

Radio Presenter – Nicholas Grimshaw Nicholas (Nick) Grimshaw, also known as Grimmy, presently hosts BBC Radio One Breakfast Show. He has been doing it for almost six years now as he took over from Chris Moyles on 12th July 2012. The Radio One Breakfast Show runs from half six in the morning till ten making it a three and half hour show, which has been going for 51 years this year with a total of 6.16 million listeners a week listening to Nick Grimshaws breakfast show. Although, when Nick Grimshaw first took over the show

GO TO

CONTENTS

from Chris Moyles there was a big decline in the listeners, making the show get the smallest audience on record at the BBC. He only co-hosted with Annie Mac for a year then moved on to solo host the Radio One's Weekend Breakfast show from October 2008 to May 2009 before moving again to the 10pm to midnight slot on Radio One which he started 1st June 2009.

Radio Show - I listened to Women's Hour on Radio 4 which I found to be very useful to me. These shows are 45 minutes to an hour long and talk about several different topics such as, parenting, working fathers, teenagers and cooking. The show is more of a conversation between a group of friends as there are many guests that appear on the show to help with the topic. Most of the time they are professionals on the situation or have been through it themselves. This gives more of an opinion and facts for the audience and could help the audience relate to them which makes them want to listen more. The fact the show is more of a conversation makes it flow as a show much better as no one is stuttering or waiting for their line because they are not talking like they are reading off of a script. Something I quite like about this show is the fact they do phone ins within the studio. This is something I have always thought about when doing radio as it is something most shows do. It's a good idea when you want a public opinion. One thing I did not enjoy about this is the fact they have no music, even between topics. I feel for some people, especially my age might find this long and could get bored as its just all talking and one topic after the other with no break. I think the type of radio show I would end up doing will have music in between topics for breaks as I feel this will attract more of an audience and won’t make people get bored.

Cable, satellite, internet, desktop production and massive media outlets. 2003 – The first BBC digital radio and TV kicked in; Xtra1, BBC 6 Music and BBC 7, the Asian network and BBC 4 TV.

Fashion Research –

I found out about several different clothing stores that have advertised wrongly or do not sell certain

clothing sizes, doing this mind map helped me keep it altogether and just pick out the important

things about each company.

Brandy Melville is an International Shop that originated from Italy. Through research I found out that they only sell one size for every piece of clothing. I looked into their online shop and found every piece of clothing had a different size but you could not change it. The sizes were also all in measurements and not normal size guides, for example the website showed a top with the sizes as 22" waist and 18" bust instead of staying size 8 or 14. From this information I found out that all the sizes they did sell were all petite and unrealistic. I measured out the certain inches of waist and bust that they sold on a piece of string and measured it beside myself and some people in my class, which I found out that no one came close to it being the right size. This made me think about how unrealistic their sizes were and how you could not change them even if you wanted to.

I also researched in Gemma Collins Boutique because I had heard she only sells one size of clothing as well. The difference between her selling one sizes only was the fact she only sells plus sizes. Finding this out has made me want to talk about this topic and what affect this has on the public, those who buy it and those who do not. I also want to know if it is unfair to the fans of hers that are not plus size themselves but cannot buy her clothes because of her only selling one size. More so, is she missing out? One of the reasons she does this is because she is plus size herself and thinks just selling plus size gives people like her more of a chance to buy nice clothing.

While researching I found out that an online shop, ASOS, miss labelled their sizes on their website. A product on their website was a size 8 but labelled as plus size. One of the main people to be blamed for this is there management as well as the CEO of the company as they normally have to oversee everything before it is updated. The affect this has on the audience is a negative one as it probably makes people who are a size 8 or more wondered if they are overweight as ASOS had labelled a small size as plus size. It makes them start think about themselves negatively.

Apart from what the companies advertise and do within their businesses I also looked at how the models on every website do not wear the size of the product that you may want to buy as they are normally wearing a fitted one to their body type which makes me wonder if this has a negative effect on the public when they buy clothes and a negative effect on the way the product is advertised. It probably affects the things people buy as they might not think it will look right on them as they might be buying a bigger size. This makes me wonder if it would be better to have models that can wear each size of the product and when you click on your size it changes, that maybe people would prefer the models to be more varied than just 'normal' model size and plus size.

Conclusion - How did the research help me with my project?

Researching into the industry roles have helped as it showed me what skills and jobs are needed to put a radio show together. Although, as interesting as it was to find out about what the editor and producer do I did not find this relevant as I will not be editing or producing the way that the industry examples do because my show will be pre-recorded not live. Listening to Women's Hour radio show on Radio 4 was very relevant to me as it was a talk show which is what I was researching into and is something I would like to do myself. It also showed me how they sound when they are put altogether and also gave me an idea of how to lay out a show in

CONTENTS

terms of having guests and several topics. It also made me realise the things I would change and want to add within my own show when I record and edit it.

Finding out the history of radio was something I found very interesting and helped me further my knowledge within the radio industry. It has shown me how radio first started and how it has expanded since, it also showed me how radio was useful during the war. Finding out this information is useful for me as it has helped me understand radio and expand my knowledge on the industry. Finding out about the different clothing stores that advertise wrongly or do not have certain clothing sizes helped me further my radio show as it gave me a lot of information to talk about and ask questions to my guests so get some opinions on the matter.

There was not many limitations within the methods I used apart from the magazine I used was from 2003 which meant any other information within the radio industry further along the years were not in there. This was one limitation as I did not find out all the history of radio up to this year. Another limitation I had was that I could not find all the information I needed for my industry examples online, which next time I will expand on researching into them by using books or autobiographies, if they have any.

and the pressure they get put on them.

Similar Products –

A similar product I looked at throughout my project was ‘Women’s Hour’ on BBC Radio 4. BBC radio

4’s target audience is 35-54 year olds, whereas I want my show to be 17-25 year olds. So a big

different between their show and mine is who we are aiming it at. Although, Women’s Hour was a

big inspiration for me as the way it is structured and presented is something that I liked myself and

wanted to try and imitate. One of the things Women’s Hour has is a structure that the show is in for

every day that it is played on the radio. I decided within my show to have a structure that if it were

to be played on the radio every day it would be in the same way every time. Women’s Hour talks

about certain topics every day, things that would interest, educate and inform their target audience

which is something I wanted to aim for within my own show. I thought of topics that my target

audience would find interesting and researched into it, finding out the things that people may not

know. This is something that my show and Women’s Hour have in similar. Another thing that is

similar is that for both shows it is a group of people having a chat about that certain topic, getting

opinions and facts given throughout. This is something I imitated from women’s hour because I liked

the fact that it just sounded like a conversation with a group friends, this I think makes the audience

feel more connected with the show, the host and guests. A difference between my show and

Women’s Hour is that I have music to break up my sections whereas women’s hour does not have

music within their show. I decided to do this because I feel it will attract and appeal to my target

audience more.

This is the schedule I have made to help me make sure everything will be done by the deadline.

Knowing what my target audience was made me write my

script differently as well as use different language. This is because I wanted to make sure I attracted

the right age, so I did not want to sound too young that they’d be disinterested but also did not want

to sound too old that they did not feel it was aimed for them. It also made me think of the structure

of my radio show as putting music in will attract the target audience more as they will be able to

have a break.

This results from YouGov Profiles shows that most people who are interested in fashion is aged 25 to 30 which does not reach to my chosen target audience although I feel this shows that not many things are aimed for young adults that might be interested in the topic as well, meaning I will be doing something unique and new for a younger audience that are interested.

Production

The production part of my project is writing the script and recording my show.

At the beginning of my recording I did not have a proper script as I wanted my show to be a natural

conversation between people. Instead I had a prep sheet that had the main topics with facts to talk

about. This helped make sure we did not go off course too much. However, I did end up doing a

timing script, this was because if it was a proper show at a radio station you would have a team of

people who would need to know when and where to do their job. To write this script I researched

into timing scripts and radio scripts. This gave me an idea of how to present one. Once I found one I

felt would work for my show, I imitated it with all the information I needed to put into it.

Before I started recording my show I had to learn how to work the equipment that was within the

radio room at college. I went in there one afternoon and learnt where to turn everything on which

was easy, as all I had to do was turn it on by the plugs behind the desk. I also learnt how to know

which microphone was which on the slide table which was also quite easy as when you went in the

recording room each microphone was plugged into a plug with number 1 to 4 on it. The numbers

helps know which microphone was which when you look at the turn table that had sliders with

numbers underneath them. I also learnt how to make sure the volume was at the right pitch with

the sliders on the turn table, as well as where to put the USB stick in and how to make sure it is

recording. To make sure it was recording you had to press the record button once, then when it said

CONTENTS

‘ready’ on the screen, you then pressed it again for it to record. After learning everything I started to

practice and play around within the studio. My guests and I changed where we would be standing

compared to the distance from the microphones, finding the right distance before recording the

final piece. This helped me figure out the best level for the microphones to be at to make sure there

was no phantom noise and I got the best sound I could.

This blog post shows the way I experimented with my radio show:

Post-production

Post-production of my project is the editing stage of all the audio I have recorded. To edit the audio I

used a program called Audition and altogether I feel it went relatively well.

To start with I put all my audio within Audition. I listened through it and edited each section down so

I had three section separate from each other, this way it made it easier for me to add music in

between. While listening through each section I also edited out long pauses that were not needed as

well as some nervous words, such as like and obviously. That was quite difficult as sometimes the

words were too close together so I had to leave some of them within the piece. Although there was

some that I managed to edit out, making the whole piece sound a little better with it having less

pauses and hesitations. I then decided on my intro music which I put together with some quotes

from my guests I had on the show and some celebrity interview quotes that went with my theme

and what we were talking about. I cut all the quotes down and put them over the top of the music,

this was a little challenging as I had to make sure the music wasn’t too loud that you could hear the

quotes but also make sure the quotes weren’t so loud it sounded like someone was shouting over

the music. Once this was done it was quite easy to put the rest of my show together. I placed all of

the section in the right orders before finding music of the internet to put in between each one for a

break. This wasn’t too challenging as all I had to do was make sure the music faded in and out at the

right times.

Once I was done and listened to it all back, now edited, I converted my audio from audition into a

MP3 file. This luckily happened straight away, so I did not have much trouble with that like I have

had in the past.

Project Evaluation

My project is a radio talk show discussing fashion and the way it’s changing especially within advertising and how this can affect the audience. The purpose for this project is to inform the target audience on what is going on around them which they may not have realised. It’s also a place for the young generation to have a say about things on a high platform such as radio. Within this project I hoped to learn the job roles that are needed within the process of making a radio show and advancing my skills within this media industry.

Research:

The first step of this project was to find out what exactly I wanted to do and then research into the

medium and theme. To start with I decided to list all the things I am interested in, one of them being

fashion which I ended up using as my theme as it is something I have not wrote about before and I

wanted to challenge myself and talk about something I’ve not done before. Although I decided

having a theme of fashion was quite broad and decided to narrow it down to sizes and models

within the industry, linking it all to the advertising of fashion. However, I also decided to have a little

section of my project to do with how fashion has and is changing through the years. I also decided to

do a radio talk show as it is something I am interested in and is a passion of mine as it is the industry

I want to go into in the future. I have also been doing work experience at a radio show which has

helped me develop my skills and knowledge in the industry, so I wanted to continue practicing my

skills by creating my own radio talk show and extend my knowledge on the industry by researching

more into it.

Fashion Research – This link will take you to a separate word document were I have written some

research notes of the certain fashion stores and styles that I used to help me write my radio script as

well as helped me with questions to ask my guests.

Celebrity interviews – This link will take you to a word document with links to celebrity interviews

that I watched. This helped me see what models within the fashion industry thinks of what happens

and the pressure they get put on them.

Looking back on the research I have done, I believe I did find out a lot of information that was

helpful for me and my radio talk show. However, there was also some things that I do not think

helped at all but were interesting for me none of the less. Altogether I think the research went well

apart from I think I could have done more research into fashion and the other shops that might do

the same or worse than the ones I did research into.

Writing:

Even though my project is audio based there was still writing involved within it. For example, I had to

have a script because if this show was real there would be different people doing the editing and

producing meaning they would need a script to know when and where certain things come in, such

as music. At first when I was recording my radio talk show I decided I did not want a word for word

script as I wanted my show to sound natural. This way the guests could have their own opinions and

words instead of reading off of a script I had written. So to start with I just had a prep script which

had bullet points on what I wanted to talk about and when. This way if during recording we went off

on a tangent I would be able to bring it back to the topic. Once all the recording and editing was

done I wrote a timing script and transcript. The transcript was helpful as it showed me what certain

words I used too many times and made me notice the nervous words, such as like, that I kept using.

This will help me in the future as I will try harder to not say nervous words by thinking about what I

want to say beforehand or taking more time to spoke to avoid using them. The timing script helped

me see when certain sound effects or music needed to be put in as well as when each section would

finish. This was useful to know how to do as in the radio industry there is more than one person

helping to make the show work. The timing script helps everyone in a team know what they should

be doing and when.

Before I started to record my radio talk show I listened to similar shows that are on the radio now.

This was a way to see what techniques and structure they use within their shows, to help me to see

what I liked and what I didn’t like which then help me decide how I want to record my own show.

One of the things Women’s Hour does is, they have a certain structure of

the show that they repeat every day when played on the radio, this helps the audience relate to the

show and feel part of it as they know what should be coming up and when because it happens every

time. I decided within my show to have a structure that if it were to be played on the radio every day

it would be in the same way every time. Women’s Hour talks about certain topics every day, things

that would interest, educate and inform their target audience which is something I wanted to aim

for within my own show. I thought of topics that my target audience would find interesting and

researched into it, finding out the things that people may not know. This is something that my show

and Women’s Hour have in similar. Another thing that is similar is that for both shows it is a group of

people having a chat about that certain topic, getting opinions and facts given throughout. This is

something I imitated from women’s hour because I liked the fact that it just sounded like a

conversation with a group friends, this I think makes the audience feel more connected with the

show, the host and guests. A difference between my show and Women’s Hour is that I have music to

break up my sections whereas women’s hour does not have music within their show. I decided to do

this because I feel it will attract and appeal to my target audience more.

When I started recording my own show, at first I decided to just play around with where I and my

guests should sit in comparison to distance from the microphone. We recorded the show a couple

times, this was because of many reasons. One of the reasons being since we didn’t have a word for

word script, because I wanted the answers and show to be a natural conversation, recording it a

couple times meant we managed to get different quotes and points about the topic from each time.

This gave me a lot to work with when it came to editing. Another reason was because it then gave us

a chance to play around with the structure of the show, seeing what should be placed where during

it and trying different distances away from the microphone to make sure we could all be heard and

were loud enough.

Once I felt like I had got all the recordings that I needed, I started to edit it all together, adding in the

music and sound effects if I felt they were needed. The first thing I did when editing was my intro

music. I knew I wanted quotes from the show within my intro music to make it more intense and

exciting for the audience than just music. This way they could also hear what would be coming up in

the show and what to expect. Some of the quotes within my intro music were also from models

talking about the fashion industry and body image. I felt like this makes the intro more interesting to

the audience if they hear a voice they might recognise. During my radio show I had three section

which I decided to edit music in between each section. This made a break for the audience when

listening. However, when editing the music in I started to think about what music I should use. At

first I was just going to put random songs in but then decided that I should link them to the theme of

my radio show which is fashion. In the end I picked three songs that were about fashion or had an

aspect of fashion within them, this way the songs do not just have no meaning to them as they link

to my theme which I think makes the show come together.

Experiments with my product:

Throughout my project I experimented with music, sound effects as well as within the radio room

when recording. While being in the radio room we played around with how far away from the

microphones we should stand. As well as changing the section order to see if it sounds better in a

different way. Then while editing I played around with different sound effects for my intro music and

having different quotes put in different places. I also changed the music that was in between each

section to see which music would sound better and if it makes sense to my theme and show.

Another way I experimented is because of the feedback I got from my tutor.

Greg’s feedback –

get sound-footage of models and industry experts or speaks-woman for female issues

try searching: over size models speak out you tube or woman/feminist on body shape and clothes etc

With this I researched into models who in interviews had reflected upon and given their opinion on

body image and how they feel about the model industry. I then showed the clips to my guests on the

show and got their opinions on it. With this I then experimented with it, putting it within my show.

When I listened back to it I did not really like it as I think it doesn’t go with the rest of my show.

Especially as it was hard to figure out where I should put it as I had already set out a structure for my

show.

Strengths and Weaknesses of my product:

The strengths within my final piece are that I managed to get a lot of opinions and new information out within the piece. This means I managed to inform people of something they did not know was happening. Another strength about my final piece I believe is the editing by the end as everything was put together in the right places, the music was edited in and wasn’t too loud but also flowed in and out with the talking. A strength to my final piece would be the intro music as I managed to get not only audience quotes but celebrity quotes within the music, making it more intense and exciting for the target audience to listen to before the show starts. A weakness of my final piece is that at some points our voices go quieter because of one of us turning too far away from microphone, this makes the voices go up and down instead of staying at one volume. However, when I do something like this again in the future I will make sure I and anyone else does not turn away from the microphones that much, so the sound does not vary. Another weakness would be that throughout the radio talk show I say a lot of nervous words, such as like, this is something in the future I will have to practice saying less as it sometimes sounds a bit unprofessional.

I sent my radio talk show to my sister, Jemma Boswell, who is 24 as she is part of my target audience

that I am aiming my show at. With this she managed to give me feedback on what she thought of it,

what she likes and thinks needs to change within my piece.

This is the email I got with her feedback on -

With this feedback I went back to my radio piece and edited the small things she had mentioned,

such as making the intro music quieter so that you can hear the quotes within it more. The feedback

I got from her made me very happy as it meant that I had achieved what I had aimed to do for my

project which was so entertain and inform my target audience.

Professional opinion on my product -

I also sent my final product to Penny Williams, the lady I do work experience at a radio station with,

to see what she thought about it and to get a professionals opinion.

Page 36: Department of Media and Communication · The research that I will be partaking includes; Primary and secondary research as well as quantitative and qualitative research. Meaning the

With this feedback I went back to editing and changed the things she had mentioned, such as the

volume of the music. I appreciated this feedback a lot as it is something I will take through to the

future with practicing not to say too many nervous words. Also for someone of her status to say that

she enjoyed my radio show made me very happy as it makes me realise I am using the right skills and

techniques to make a good and interesting show for an audience.

Altogether I believe that my product went better than I expected as I got a lot of information

through my research and throughout recording my guests gave a lot of opinions with the matters of

the subject. All of this put together made my show more interesting and informative to the target

audience that would be listening. I also feel the editing went better than I thought compared to

audio editing that I have done before which I believe is because I have had practice with it now and

also gave myself more time to edit instead of rushing it. However, if I were to do this again I would

improve on my speaking, such as making sure I do not sure as many ‘nervous’ words for example,

like. For this I will probably try to take my time with what I want to say and have a clear mind on

what exactly I want to say as well. I would also improve on the distance we were away from the

microphones because at some points someone was closer or louder than others because of either

not being close enough or turning our heads to look at someone else. In the future, I will make sure

the microphone is in a better position.

My hypothesis for my final major project was, “What makes a good radio talk show?” I believe, now

I’ve come to the end of the project, that I have answered this hypothesis. As you can see I have

researched into the industry and found out what makes a radio show come together such as the job

roles and skills which are included. Researching into other radio show also helped me answer my

hypothesis as it made me think about what made them good radio shows, not boring, and how I

could imitate that for my show.
