IntroductionCoatings are applied to aircraft’s parts body and partsmainly as a defense against corrosion, abrasion, anddegradation frequently caused by chemical contamination andUV radiation.

Repainting of military aircraft is recommended every 8 to 12years and of commercial airliners every 4 years. Coatingremoval is expensive and generates hazardous waste.

The ability to verify the still coating characteristics couldminimize or eliminate the need for coat stripping andreapplying during manufacturing.

Page 9: Department of Mechanical Engineering Department of ...

The motivation is to design, develop, and fabricate anon-contact multi-layer coating fringing electric fieldsensor capable of measuring the coating thickness ofindividual layers of a multi-layer coating stack used onmilitary and commercial aircraft. The senor can be usedto measure partially dried coatings during automatedpainting process.

MagRAM

Magnetic Radar Absorbent Material is used in stealthtechnology to disguise a structure from radar detection.

Common forms of MagRAM

Common form Application

Neoprene polymer sheets with ferrite grains or carbon black particles

Tiles of this material were used on early versions of the F-117A Nighthawk

Iron ball paint (contains tiny spears coated with carbonyl iron or ferrite) Also used on the F-117

MagRAM paint made from ferrofluidic and non-magnetic substances Used by the US Air Force

Available MagRAM Products

Flexible magRAM sheets Silicone rubber based material

MagRAM paint Coated carbonyl iron based paint in a proprietary urethane acrylic resin
