Department of Mathematics Newsletter April 2016 http://www.semo.edu/math/ Experience Southeast...Experience Success . MCTM Elementary Math Competitions The Department of Mathematics hosted a qualifying and a regional elementary math contest sponsored by the Missouri Council of Teachers of Mathematics (MCTM). Fourth, fifth, and six graders competed in four events. The Number Sense event emphasized mental math with no calculators or scratch paper allowed. The Sprint event emphasized accuracy and speed without the use of a calculator with points deducted for incorrect answers. Both the Target and Team events focused on problem solving skills. Approximately twenty faculty and students volunteered to help organize, proctor, and grade the tests. On Saturday, February 20th, 131 fourth, fifth and sixth graders from eleven area schools attended the qualifying round at Dempster Hall on the campus of Southeast Missouri State University. Fifty students had scores on the tests that qualified them for the regional competition. The regional competition was held on Saturday, April 2nd with 123 students from twenty-seven schools in the southeast part of Missouri competing in Dempster Hall, followed by an awards ceremony in Academic Audito- rium. Ribbons were awarded to the top five students from each grade in the Sprint, Number Sense, and Target events. School plaques and individual ribbons were awarded to the top five teams, with the top team advancing to state competition. Each team was comprised of one to four students from the same or different grade levels. The top ten overall winners from each grade level advanced to state competition and were also awarded ribbons. Students from five regional competitions will participate in the state competition to be held on Saturday May 21st at Columbia College in Columbia, MO. Ann Schnurbusch said, “It’s gratifying to see younger students excited about mathematics. Many students spend much of the year preparing for these contests.” After the contest, one sponsor emailed that, “They absolutely loved having the awards ceremony at Academic Hall. They felt like it added a feeling of importance and excitement. It also allowed the kids to see more of campus. This is the first time many of my kids have seen a college campus.”
