intercollegiate meet Mathematics

carnival on 3.01.2013. Students from

18 colleges in and around Madurai

participated. The competitions

conducted for this year are paper

presentation, quiz, model presenta-

tion, dumb charades and rangoli. The

overall shield was won by Vivekananda

College.

Celebration Time—The Maths Carnival

Beyond the classroom...

Through service learning programmes, 36 of our students helped the 8th and 9th Standard stu-

dents of Pandyian Nendunchezhiyan Corporation school, tutoring them in Mathematics. 7 of our

students also got engaged in helping an NGO, SOCO Trust in sorting and analyzing data.

winning the overall shield in the intercollegiate competi-

tions held in

NMS Sermathai Vasan College (Aug. 2013)

Do you know?

In working out mathematical equations, the Greek Mathematician Pythagoras used little rocks to represent numbers. Hence the name CALCULUS was born, which means PEBBLES in Greek.

Sep 24,2014 goes down in history as the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) successfully inserted its spacecraft ‘Mangalyaan’ into Mar’s orbit, making India the first country to successfully carry out such a mission in its maiden attempt.

A training programme for the CSIR NET exam was given by Dr. R. Parvathy, Former HOD, Holy

Cross College, Nagercoil and Mr. R. Gnanaprakasam, Assistant Professor, Government Polytech-

nic College, Aundipatti for our I and II PG students.

A soft skill training programme was organized for the outgoing students on the topic

“Calculate your potentials—Be competent—Time management”. The resource person was

Ms. Latha Solomon, Life Skill trainer.

For 46 students who needed extra attention, remedial classes were arranged after class

hours.

For the students

Pleasure Trip...

For the school students

The staff and students of the

Department arranged for an

exhibition for school children on

06.12.13. The students prepared a

number of models and displayed it.

Students from many corporation

schools got benefitted of the

exhibition.

The 2011 batch students were taken on a pleasure trip to Ooty in August, 2013. The current out-

going students went on a study tour to Bangalore and Mysore in September, 2014.

Faculty Achievements

The Department has 16 faculty members out of whom two have already completed their

Ph.D. Mrs. Carmel Richard completed her VIVA in August 2014. Five more faculty are doing

part time research.

Faculty of the department get regularly updated with the emerging trends in the field of

Mathematics by attending National & International Seminars/conferences and training

programmes; they also had presented their papers and published papers in reputed jour-

nals.
