Sheffield has a long history in Materials,
and the Department goes back to 1882
Steel is especially closely linked, due to the
local geography:
• Available ore
• Available coal
• Hills and water for power
Materials in Sheffield
Department Of Materials Science & Engineering
Many innovations in Steel came from Sheffield:
• 1740 - the Huntsman process for crucible steel
• 1855 - the Bessemer converter
• 1912 - Stainless Steel discovered by Harry Brearley
Sheffield has been a centre of cutlery production since 1600 – now local manufacturing focus is high tech (medical, nuclear, aerospace, etc)

Department Of Materials Science & Engineering
The course delivery? Lectures – the principal formal means of imparting knowledge.
Practical sessions – structured laboratory sessions to develop understanding of experimental design, methods & data interpretation.
Coursework assignments – provide students with opportunities to develop and demonstrate their understanding of the academic content of a module.
Research project – bespoke project of your choice in collaboration with an academic staff member who is an expert in the field.
Group discussion – small group up to class sized sessions, usually led by an academic staff member.
Departmental Seminars – provide the opportunity to learn from relevant current research.
Independent study – Students are expected to develop this essential skill from course work and class presentations.
