1: DEFINITIONS AThesisisaformal,comprehensive,wriJendisserta0ondescribingoriginalresearchonachosensubject.Thisoriginalworkmayinclude:• inves0ga0onaimedatthediscoveryand/orinterpreta0onoffacts• challengeand/orpossiblerevisionofacceptedtheoriesorlaws• orderingandsynthesizingofexis0ngfindingstosupportaconclusionwhichcouldopen-upnewresearch

direc0ons.

SpecificrequirementswithrespecttotheformatofthefinalwriJendocumentforaThesisaresetoutintheThesis

WithrespecttoaPrac$cum,sec0on4.8.1.1oftheAcademicGuideoftheFacultyofGraduateStudiesnotesthat:Aprac-cumdiffersfromthethesisinitsemphasisontheapplica-onoftheory,itishoweversimilarinscope,span,and

rigour.Theprac-cumtakestheformofanexerciseintheprac-calapplica-onofknowledgeandskill.Itusuallyinvolves

thecarefuldefini-onofaproblem,theapplica-onofappropriateknowledgeandskillstotheproblem,andareportoftheresultsinamannersuitableforevalua-onbyanexaminingcommiJee.

Inshort,therefore,theThesiscanbedescribedasthe"genera0onofnewknowledge"whereasthePrac$cumcanbedescribedasthe"applica0onofexis0ngknowledgeinanewway".

OncestudentshavedecidedwhethertheywishtodoaThesisortodoaPrac0cum,theymustusethecorresponding

2: STAGES OF WORK Therearetwocomponentstothecomple0onofaThesis/Prac0cum–comple0onoftherequiredpreparatorycourseworkandexecu0onoftheresearch/designworkanddocumenta0on.Therequiredcourseworkcomprises

CourseLARC7040:DesignResearchandCourseLARC7400:LandscapeTopics.Theprocedurefortheexecu0onandexamina0onoftheresearch/designworkanddocumenta0onisoutlinedhere.

StudentsareexpectedtoconsultonaregularbasiswiththeirAcademicorThesis/Prac0cumAdviser,asappropriate–par0cularlyinthecomple0onofCourseLARC7400:LandscapeTopics–andtoconsultasmutuallyagreedwithother

CommiJeemembers/ExaminerswithrespecttotheirThesis/Prac0cum.ItisstronglyrecommendedthatstudentsdonotseekadvicefromtheirotherCommiJeemembers/Examinerswithouttheknowledgeandagreementoftheir

Thesis/Prac0cumAdviser.

3: THESIS / PRACTICUM PROPOSAL Theprepara0on,presenta0onandformalapprovalofawelldevelopedProposalisacri0calstepintheprocessof

undertakingaThesisorPrac0cum.TheProposalmustbeclearlyfocusedandsuccinct.TheProposalmustbeapproved

bytheStudent'sThesis/Prac0cumAdviser,andothercommiJeememberspriortothecommencementoffieldwork.

TheThesisorPrac0cumproposalisconsideredformallyapprovedwiththesubmissionoftheFacultyofGraduate

StudiesMaster’sThesis/Prac-cumForm(seeAppendixD)andacopyoftheProposaltotheStudentServicesAssistant.ThisapprovalgenerallyfollowsaformalProposalPresenta0onmadetothestaffandstudentsoftheDepartmentof

LandscapeArchitecture.Thisisexpectedtobedoneatthecomple0onoftheCourseLARC7040:DesignResearch.

TheStudentmustalsotakeresponsibilityforundertakingtheethicsapprovalprocessforResearchwithHumanSubjectsifrequiredfortheirresearch.SuchapprovalmustbegrantedbeforetheStudentbeginstheirfieldwork.The

EthicsProtocolSubmissionForm,guidelinesanddeadlines,etc.areavailablethroughtheOfficeofResearchServices.

4: COMMITTEES AND EXAMINERS TheAcademicCalendarstates,foranAdvisoryCommiJeeforaMaster'sdegree:

AdvisorycommiJeesarenormallyselectedbytheadvisor/co-advisorinconsulta-onwiththestudentandshouldconsistofindividualswhoseexper-seisconsistentwiththatnecessarytoprovideaddi-onaladvicetothestudent

duringhis/herresearchprogram.TheadvisorycommiJeemustconsistofaminimumofthreemembers(includingtheadvisor/co-advisor),twoofwhommustbemembersoftheFacultyofGraduateStudies,oneofwhommustholda

primaryappointmentfromwithintheunitandoneofwhommustholdnoappointmentwithintheunit.Itisexpected,

undernormalcircumstances,thatAdvisoryCommiJeemembershaveaMaster’sdegreeorequivalent.AdvisorycommiJeesmayincludeonenon-vo-ngguestmemberwhohasexper-seinarelateddisciplinebutisnotamemberof

theFacultyofGraduateStudies.AstaffmemberattheUniversityofManitobaattherankofAssistantProfessororabovecannothaveanadvisorycommiJeememberwithanappointmentinthesameunit.Graduatestudentsmaynot

serveongraduatestudentadvisorycommiJees.

Thecomposi-onof,andanychangesto,theadvisorycommiJee,includingtheadvisor/co-advisor,mustbeapprovedby

theFacultyofGraduateStudies.Theadvisor/co-advisoristheChairoftheadvisorycommiJee.

5: STUDENT RESPONSIBILITIES StudentsareremindedoftheFacultyofGraduateStudiesrequirementthattheycompleteanagreementwiththeirAcademicAdviserassetoutintheFaculty'sAdvisor-StudentGuidelines(locatedunderGraduateStudiesonJUMP).
