Department of Computer Engineering Report On Industrial Visit To Jaipur (2017-2018) Objective: The industrial visit is intended to provide students of Computer Engineering with required exposure to the working environment and practical knowledge. The motive is to learn and supplement the class room teaching. Companies Visited: 1) My FM 94.3 Radio Station 2) Dainik Bhaskar Printing Press 3) Saras Jaipur Dairy Duration: 11 Days (From 26.12.2013 to 05.01.2014) Number of Students participated: 55 Students. Date of Visit: 28 th December, 2017 - 1 st January, 2018 Faculty & Staff members accompanied: Dr. Satish Y.Ket ,Prof.PriyaParate,Prof.ShilpaJadhao Outcome of the visit: Industrial visit was carried out from 28th December, 2017 to 1st January, 2018 for Computer Engineering Students. The main objective behind the visit was to make the students aware about how the computers are used in different industries. Three different industries were chosen to show the widespread and different uses of computers. The industries were selectively chosen so that the students could relate and understand the major role played by each one of them. 1) FM 94.3’s Radio Station The first industry we visited was FM 94.3’s Radio Station, which is located in the heart of Jaipur city. After reaching the facility students were greeted and guided by one of the producers of the station. We always imagined that a radio station would be a small office with minimal workforce and efforts required but it was great to see and know that it is not true. The building was quite big and had many sections and cubicles where people were working. We were briefed about the whole process of recording the shows to listening it on our radios. We then visited the recording studio where a show was on air live. It was a small soundproof room so that there is no disturbance. The radio jockey greeted us and briefed us about her workstation. There was a computer in which the jockey had around 5000 songs and with the help of which all other processes were synchronised. So whenever the listener demanded a song to be played, the jockey would select the song from her computer and put the necessary settings and play the song on air. The main area of interest was the Operating System used in that computer. It was named Zeta. It is developed by the company yellowTAB based in Germany. Zeta was built for digital media work and is written to take advantage of modern hardware facilities such as symmetric multiprocessing by utilizing modular I/O bandwidth, pervasive multithreading and preemptive multitasking. It is one of the most dependable O.S available and not error and crash prone. The jockey demonstrated the use of this O.S and also interacted with our students on air in the studio.

Outcome of the visit:

Industrial visit was carried out from 28th December, 2017 to 1st January, 2018 for Computer

Engineering Students. The main objective behind the visit was to make the students aware about how

the computers are used in different industries. Three different industries were chosen to show the

widespread and different uses of computers. The industries were selectively chosen so that the students

could relate and understand the major role played by each one of them.

1) FM 94.3’s Radio Station

The first industry we visited was FM 94.3’s Radio Station, which is located in the heart of

Jaipur city. After reaching the facility students were greeted and guided by one of the producers of the

station. We always imagined that a radio station would be a small office with minimal workforce and

efforts required but it was great to see and know that it is not true. The building was quite big and had

many sections and cubicles where people were working. We were briefed about the whole process of

recording the shows to listening it on our radios. We then visited the recording studio where a show

was on air live. It was a small soundproof room so that there is no disturbance. The radio jockey

greeted us and briefed us about her workstation. There was a computer in which the jockey had around

5000 songs and with the help of which all other processes were synchronised. So whenever the listener

demanded a song to be played, the jockey would select the song from her computer and put the

necessary settings and play the song on air. The main area of interest was the Operating System used in

that computer. It was named Zeta. It is developed by the company yellowTAB based in Germany. Zeta

was built for digital media work and is written to take advantage of modern hardware facilities such as

symmetric multiprocessing by utilizing modular I/O bandwidth, pervasive multithreading and

preemptive multitasking. It is one of the most dependable O.S available and not error and crash prone.

The jockey demonstrated the use of this O.S and also interacted with our students on air in the studio.

Next we went to other section which keeps everything going over the air without a fault. It was the

technical section. Engineers were busy here looking after numbers machines. They synchronised the

shows. The transmitters work faultlessly because of these people.

The visit concluded with an interactive session for the students, where they got an opportunity

to interact with the concerned authorities and gain more knowledge. It was a great learning experience

for one and all.

2) DainikBhaskar Printing Press :

The second industry we visited was DainikBhaskar Printing Press which was located on the

outskirts of Jaipur. Students were divided into two groups. Each group was guided by a supervisor of

the press. The supervisors explained how the Indian press has evolved from the ancient to the modern

age. Initially, the editor used to write the edited article , which was then sent to the press, which was a

slow printing process. Today, the article is typed in the computer, stored in PDF file and printed by

automated machines, which is a very fast process. The students were shown how actually the paper

passed from one machine to another, how various colours were integrated and the papers getting ready

within no time. 40,000 copies were delivered per hour.

The supervisor then explained how computers affected the printing industry. He briefed us

about how one can scan transparencies and reflective media into the system with accurate color, and

hand off to the print shop plate-ready electronic files. One can even send these over a network. Once

the printer has checked (preflighted) these files, he/she can impose them and directly expose full eight-

page flats. So with the help of computers, these files no longer need to be printed to film as an

intermediate step. It is possible to image directly to plate.

Infact he said, Computers run the presses now. An operator can automatically hang the plates

and preset ink fountains based on computer profiles, drastically reducing waste and make-ready time.

Once the paper is running on press, computers provide feedback and then self-correct to ensure the

mechanical accuracy of the job.So in every area from controlling ink and color fidelity to making sure

the mechanics of the process run smoothly, computers play an increasing role. The influence of

computers started in writing, moved to design and then prepress, and then moved to press work. Now

computer automation and control are gradually migrating to the finishing processes.

The supervisor pointed out that, “Printing is an art and a craft, not a commodity. I consider

the computer to be nothing more or less than a tool used by skilled artisans to facilitate the

production of quality presswork. ”

Afterwards, the students were taken to have a live experience of the newspaper printing and

were given an opportunity to take a tour around the working printing press. The students got an

opportunity to see the newspaper under printing. The visit was quite successful as the students were

enlightened and practical exposure about the particularities of the print world.

3) Saras Jaipur Dairy

Our next Industrial Visit was Saras Jaipur Dairy (popularly called as Jaipur Dairy).

It is one of the largest dairy factories located in the heart of Jaipur. The students were then escorted by

an official from the dairy who then briefed us about the history of the dairy plant and the functioning of

the milk and other dairy products from the raw materials. Students were taken into the plant where milk

was being manufactured from the raw one. The information regarding the capacity of huge tanks and

the milk content in it was displayed on a computer screen inside a small room. The packaging units and

the machinery were all automated and controlled by computers.

Having done with the tour, fresh ice-cream from the dairy was served to the students and teachers.

Apart from this AmerFort , City Palace and JantarMantar were considered for sightseeing and

exploration. Amer or Amber Fort is located on a hill and students were taken there in an auto uptill the

entrance. The rich heritage and history was given by a tour guide inside the fort. JantarMantar was

another place which portrayed a classic example of detailed calculations and mathematics. The

temperature, time, day, zodiac signs everything was figured out way back in time.

Students at City Palace

Overall it was an informative, interesting and a successful visit. As students of Computer

Engineering, they understood live Software applications and importance of Computers in different

industries. We express our thanks to the professionals at the above visited industries who spent their

valuable time in imparting their broad spectrum of knowledge to the students.
