DEPARTMENT PROFILE

1. INTRODUCTION:

The Department of Community Medicine has been training undergraduates from the

inception of Yenepoya Medical College in 1999 and postgraduates from the year 2012.

The Department is striving hard to provide an effective training to the undergraduate

(MBBS) and postgraduate medical students (MD).

2. OBJECTIVES:

1. To provide quality community oriented education to the undergraduate and

postgraduate medical students.

2. Comprehensive training of medical students to create a cadre of competent basic

doctors.

3. To impart knowledge to the medical students regarding the social determinants of

1. Public Health Museum:

The Department is well equipped with a public health museum measuring 125 square

meters.

Models of public health importance like vectors, immunizing agents, insecticides,

disinfectants, food stuff and drugs are displayed in the museum

Posters depicting the significant contributions of scientists towards advances in public

health and the epidemiology of communicable and non-communicable diseases are exhibited in the museum.

2. Departmental Library cum Seminar Hall

The Department has a spacious library cum seminar hall measuring 30 square

metres.

The library has an adequate collection of books and journals, which are being

utilized by the postgraduates and faculty.

Additionally, postgraduate presentations are conducted in the Seminar Hall.

The Department has two spacious demonstration rooms.

Teaching programmes and practical classes for undergraduate medical students

4. Public Health Laboratory:

The Department has two state of the art public health laboratories measuring 250

square metres and 93 square metres each respectively.

Public health procedures like water analysis, Orthotoluidine Test are conducted in

the laboratories.

Undergraduate and Postgraduate practical classes are conducted, as per schedule

in the laboratories.

5. Research laboratory:

The Department has a capacious Research Laboratory, measuring 50 square

metres.

The laboratory is equipped with a Computer and instruments of public health

importance

The laboratory is well utilized by the faculty and postgraduates, with respect to

analysis and interpretation of study data.

6. Razia Rural Health Training Centre (RHTC) , Harekala:

The Department of Community Medicine manages a residential Rural Health

Training Centre in Harekala, situated 13 kilometres from Yenepoya Medical College, covering a population of 30,045.

The Centre was established in the year 2012.

The RHTC is under the administrative control of the Principal, Yenepoya Medical

College

9. Family Medicine OPD, Yenepoya Medical College Hospital:

The Department of Community Medicine runs a Family Medicine Clinic on all

weekdays, from 9 am to 1.30 pm at Yenepoya Medical College Hospital.

The faculty, postgraduates and interns are posted in the Family Medicine OPD on

a rotation basis.

The patients are residents of the field practice areas, Department of Community

Medicine, Yenepoya Medical College.

10. OPD services at Mangalore University Campus:

The Department also delivers Outpatient services at Mangalore University,

Konaje, on all weekdays from 9 am to 1.30 pm.

The postgraduates are posted in the OPD, on rotation.

The activities are supervised by the faculty

The beneficiaries of the OPD are the students and staff of Mangalore University

along with residents of Konaje.

11. Paramedical sections:

Epidemiological unit:

An Epidemiologist of the Department visits the field practice area and hostels.

Regular community based research is conducted.

Weekly surveillance related data submitted to district surveillance unit as a part of

Integrated Disease Surveillance project.

The unit is headed by Dr. I Selvaraj, Associate Professor cum Epidemiologist.

Medico-Social Work Section:

A total of 5 Medico-social workers; 2 each in RHTC and UHTC and 1 in the

Department are responsible for the functioning of the Medico-social work section, under the supervision of Dr. Padma Mohanan, Medico-Social Worker and Associate

Professor of Sociology .

Family health records are maintained in the Rural Health Centre, Harekala which has

6000 families and Urban Health Centre, Bunder which covers 5000 families.

Regular visits are made to school and Anganwadi Centres, located in the field

practice areas.

Outreach health camps are organized regularly.

Furthermore, the section also facilitates family health care postings and field visits to the undergraduate medical students.

Family Care Study Section:

A total of 11,000 families in both the centres are followed up periodically by

paramedical staff posted at the centre, under the guidance of Assistant Professors and Lady Medical Officers of the respective centres.

Maternal Child Health and Family Welfare related records are updated on a regular basis by the staff of the Family Care Study section.

Health Education Section:

Health educators at UHTC and RHTC periodically visit the families in the field

practice area and educate them on critical aspects pertaining to the prevailing health problems along with sensitization on health promotion measures and steps to prevent

and control disease.

Regular health education sessions are conducted with respect to Maternal Child

Health and family welfare are conducted in the schools, Anganwadi Centers and field practice areas.

Biostatistics Section:

A Biostatistician is involved in the consolidation statistics of families and health data

of field practice areas, utilizes it for teaching and training purposes.

Teaching Training programs for Post Graduates on Biostatistics & Research

Methodology are conducted.

and Miss. Soumya Shetty-Lecturer in Biostatistics.

1. E-learning:

E-learning is well implemented in the Department. The faculty members upload their

presentations into the E-learning portal and forum discussions are initiated. Moreover,

Online MCQ Assessments are conducted for the Undergraduates periodically.

2. Future plan:

The Department will be hosting the Karnataka Association of Community Health

Conference -2015 on 30th and 31st October with the Pre-Conference CME on

29/1/2015. The theme for the Conference is “Urban Health: changing priorities,

opportunities and challenges”.
