He worked with WNED TV, our collaborator on

some community-based health promotion pro-jects, to arrange for them to sponsor the award when it was first given in 2011. Paul personally contributed as well. When our community-based efforts moved beyond those based on the WNED collaboration, the Department supported the Award. In Paul’s honor, it has been renamed the Paul T. Wietig Community Service Award. In addition to his caring and kindness, Paul left us with many words of wisdom. One of his favorite quotes was from Gandhi, "Be the change you wish to see in the world." That’s especially relevant in a Department of Community Health and Health Behavior! Another quote that Paul shared most recently was from Pericles, “What you leave behind is not what is engraved in stone monuments, but what is woven into the lives of others." Along with many of our faculty, staff, and students, I feel blessed to have been part of Paul’s tapestry. May his legacy be an inspiration to us all. To learn more about Paul’s legacy, share a reflection, or donate to the Paul T. Wietig Memorial Fund, please visit: http://sphhp.buffalo.edu/home/about-us/paul-wietig-dedication.html. To the public’s health, Gary Giovino Professor and Chair, CHHB

At this time of year we recognize and celebrate the accomplishments of our many students. They have grown in numerous ways, with many (but certainly not all) of their achievements listed in this newsletter. I congratulate them and the faculty members who have supported them. I also acknowledge with great sadness the passing of a member of the CHHB/SPHHP family. Dr. Paul Wietig has been an enormous supporter of our program. All of the faculty members and many of our students have been touched by his kindness, generosity, caring, and intellect. Paul would always take the time to advise me on matters that were relevant to teaching, interprofessional education, and my daughter. It was Paul’s idea to create a community service award for the Department in order to recognize and encourage the ways that CHHB students were contributing to the health of the local community.
