1.0 Introduction
The Chemistry Department of the Faculty of Science at Chancellor College in the
University of Malawi with the financial support of the Excellence Center for
Development Cooperation (EXCEED), Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and
Development (Germany) and DAAD, through the Technische Universtat
Braunschweig conducted a five day Sub-Saharan Regional training workshop on
‘water and wastewater management’ for experts working in the water sector,
Masters and PhD students. Twenty four participants and eight facilitators attended
the workshop from various countries; namely, Burkina Faso, Togo, Cameroon,
Ethiopia, Nigeria, Botswana, Kenya, Zimbabwe and Malawi (Appendix 1 for details of
the participants). The workshop was officially opened by the Vice Principal of
Chancellor College. This report largely comprises of feedback received from the
participants at the end of the program.
1.1 Objectives
The objectives of the program were that, upon completion of the training,
participants should be able to:
(i) Demonstrate understanding of different water supply systems and
water purification methods
(ii) Demonstrate knowledge of physicochemical and microbiological
characteristics of water and wastewater
(iii) Understand different ways of managing wastewater from point of
generation to disposal
(iv) Appreciate some of the available potential local methods for
wastewater treatment
4
1.2 Duration
The training program was for 5 days from 29th
April to 3rd
May 2013.
1.3 Venue
For the first two days the training program took place in the Faculty of Law
conference room at the new Faculty of Law Building at Chancellor College. On the
third and first half of fourth day the program was in the Audio-Visual Centre of the
Faculty of Education. The second half of the fourth day was a field day to Mulunguzi
Dam which supplies water to Zomba City and the Water treatment plant of the
Zomba City where further training on microbiological analysis was conducted. The
fifth day was an excursion to the third largest lake in Africa, Lake Malawi.
1.4 Program delivery
The program was delivered largely through lectures, presentations, discussions and
field visit. At the beginning of the conference, immediately after self introductions,
participants were given three minutes each to present their expectations.

1.5 Participants
The twenty four participants who attended the program were middle level officers in
water sectors, Masters and PhD students from nine countries in the Sub-Saharan
Africa region. 20 participants were supported by EXCEED whereas 4 were students
from the host institution. The countries along with the number of participants are
given in Table 1 below:

2.0 Program evaluation by participants
The training program received a lot of positive feedback. A summary of the
evaluation reports is graphically given below as percentages of participants agreeing
to the issues in the titles and their level of agreement.

2.1 Comments and suggestions for further improvement
In addition to responding to the evaluation questions above, the participants also
made comments and suggested some ideas for further improvement in future. The
ideas included some of the comments presented below:
10
“The training addressed many of the challenges I meet at my work though in a short period”
“I suggest that future programs be given enough time so that the facilitators would present
their lessons at a good pace”
“I suggest that continuity of these programs is of paramount importance if objectives of the
EXCEED are to be realized”
“In future it should be interesting to propose a topic, may be at the end and different point
if views would be given according to the training needs of each participant”
“This training far exceeded my expectations in the training but as the ICT, I was not
encouraged”
‘Good job!”
“Keep the participants in a hotel with internet because we had problem to connect
ourselves during the stay”
“The presentation on motivation letters attacked certain people as their application letters
and not motivation statements were presented”
“The organizers did their best with what was available in Zomba to make the training
fruitful. Keep up the good work!!!”
“I had a very wonderful experience in Malawi through EXCEED and I am looking forward to
more experiences and exposure from EXCEED”
“I am glad I came. Thanks to EXCEED”
“I am persuaded through the program that EXCEED training has not only increased
knowledge of participants but also helped in shaping the career of many as well. Bravo to
the organizers”.
“I would suggest a training in chemical instrumentation for participants to have hands – on
experience with various analytical instruments that most don’t have in their respective
universities i.e GC-MS, XRD, FTIR …thanks”
“The program was well organize. The organizers/facilitators works as a team. Presentations
were relevant to African Countries”
“Good interaction between participants and facilitators. However it would be good to have
equal number of participants from different countries”
“Book participants in a hotel/lodge with internet. Overall it was great experience and I
enjoyed my stay in Zomba. Big up for the Malawi EXCEED team!!!”
“The lodge is a bit far from the city centre and there is no internet access”
11
“I feel very happy I have got new knowledge, skills, good communication and experience
sharing that make us united and act as one people. I feel as if I am celebrating the African
Union with exchanging experience and culture”
“It was such a nice training that touches on my area of study that I am planning to start
working on. I appreciate the warm welcome from the Chancellor College community and the
EXCEED for the organisation of the training in Malawi”
