Vice Chancellor’s Message

There is no denying the fact, that the world including Indian sub-Continent is changing at a fast pace. Change is the only mantra of business today which enables business houses to gain advantage in today’s highly volatile environment. India having realized this phenomenon in its right perspective, has emerge as one of the strong economic powers of the world. This is further corroborated by its 2025 vision and a survey by McKinsey Global Institute (MGI) predicting India to be the world’s 25th largest consumer market. The survey boosts of the rise in the aggregate consumption of India fourfold from present 17 trillion to nearly 70 trillion by 2025. Given these developments, India is

listed by IANS as the most powerful country in the world after US, China and EU. Similarly, the new global line-up of 2010 (Global Governance 2025 jointly issued by NIC of the US and the EUISS of EU), also predicts India’s clout in the world’s economy.

It can, therefore, safely be argued that India is emerging big economic power which is reflected from its present economic indicators of exports, imports and foreign exchange reserves. The recent economic meltdown which adversely affected the West in particular and Europe in general, opened new opportunities for indigenous and financial engineers to offer their services to the global players. This has resulted in a great demand for producing ace proficient, hardcore and well chiseled financial managers having requisite professional deft and acumen.

Realizing the dire need and demand for producing these financial professionals to meet the future needs which have arisen in view of economic growth and market expansions globally and domestically, the Department of Business and Financial Studies, Kashmir University; (DBFS, KU) launched an appropriate and highly super-specialized PG Program in finance viz; Masters in Finance and Control (MFC) way back in 2005. This

foresightedness of the department speaks volumes about their being visionary and also being able to capitalize its efforts to utilize the departmental resources and capabilities to attain the cherished goal of producing future talented finance professionals.

It is worthwhile to mention here that the MFC program, ever since its launching, has achieved many milestones like course structure being industry specific, fabulous track record of placements both internships and final placements in leading corporate houses across the country. This has been achieved under the dynamic leadership of Professor Nazir A Nazir, HOD, DBFS. I personally appreciate and acknowledge his sincere endeavor. I, equally appreciate the efforts of the Placement Cell of the department to have successfully placed over 80% of its MFCians till date in the leading and well reputed companies across the country.

I wish all prospective MFCians a successful & bright fututre.

Message from the Head

The financial sector reforms in the country entailed a much needed transition from interventionist approach to market based mechanism that resulted in change in the composition and structure of the financial sector of the country necessitating among other things the creation of human resource that would cater to the requirements of the companies that aspire to make a mark in the new dispensation. The human resource that can take up the challenging responsibilities in the financial sector with peculiar

analytical and conceptual skills in the areas like Financial Services, Investment Management, and Security Analysis etc. therefore, deserved bold initiatives from the academic and professional institutes of the country in preparing our posterity to meet the changing requirements of the financial sector. It is in view of this, the Department of Business & Financial Studies, University of Kashmir launched this highly innovative and super specialized course in the area of finance called MFC in the year 2005 with the sole purpose of building the new cadre of financial professionals having intellectual maturity, strength of purpose and ethical behavior and integrity.

The programme largely focuses on producing the competent and qualified professionals in the area of finance. The programme has a distinguished educational pedagogy emphasizing on the conceptual understanding of the subjects, development of technical, human and conceptual skills, exposure to practical applications and industry interactions to develop insights into industry practices. In fact the multipoint contact with the industry is the hallmark of this course which provides our MFCians first hand exposure to the real world of Indian Financial System.

The question that is likely to haunt aspiring graduates is “Why Masters in Finance” (MFC). It is true that MFC is not yet a heavily branded professional course like CA, MBA, ICS because of its recent origin. However this course is gaining popularity in the financial world year after year because of its inherent strengths and relevance. MFC, a highly specialized professional course offers bright careers in the area of finance be it a Corporate Finance, Capital Markets, Forex Market, Banking, Insurance, Mutual Funds etc.

I invite you to join our MFC programme for successful and bright future.

Prof. Nazir A Nazir

Dissertation / Project Report

MCFcians are required to perform project work related to their area of specialization. The project study is the means by which the students show their ability to synthesize the range of knowledge and skill to provide a practical and viable solution to a problem. Students are judged on their ability to meet deadlines, to carry out critical evaluation, to write logically and concisely, draw valid conclusions and make meaningful recommendations. The project work is carried out in the 3rd Semester of the programme. The dissertation project report is subsequently assessed by the internal as well as external examiners.

AssessmentFor MFC we have evolved a mechanism of continuous assessment rather than an annual evaluation system. Continuously students learning advancements are assessed through class tests, simulation exercises, case presentations, seminars and panel discussions. The assessment focuses on how well our graduates are prepared in :

• Understanding professional and ethical responsibility;

• Conveying the technical information in written reports and oral presentations;

• Participating in team approaches to analyze and solve problems;

• Using accounting and financing softwares.

We have a policy of continuously providing a feed back to the students about their performance with the purpose to help them to plan improvements.

Instructions for Marking Answer Sheet

Answer sheets are scanned by OMR based machine. Thus accuracy in scoring is a result of accurate machine scanning, which in turn depends on the extent to which examinees mark their answer sheets properly.

Answer must be in the proper location on the answer sheet. Occasionally, scanning discrepancies occur. These are usually the result of the machine scanner misinterpreting, an incomplete eraser as an intended response or misinterpreting a light mark as an unintended response. Therefore, accurate scoring is dependent on the candidate’s strict adherence to the procedure prescribed by the test-conducting agency, which will be announced on the date of written test. Please note, it is the responsibility of the candidates to make certain that they understand and follow the directions for completing their answer sheet.
