Department Profile Course Offered
Committed to excellence in Education, Research and Community Services
The Department of Botany at the School of Biological Sciences has an
active program leading to undergraduate, graduate and Ph.D.
courses. The course contents are designed to encourage and
promote the training of students in all aspects of Botany. The primary
goal of the Department is to produce graduates who can relate to
the needs of the society through their knowledge of the amazing
facets of plant life and plant products. The programs are designed to
give an understanding of the basic principles of biological sciences
and in depth knowledge in various aspects of Botany including
Diversity of plants, Taxonomy, Biosystematics, Morphology,
Mycology, Garden Management, Pathology, Plant Physiology,
Ecology, Cytology, Genetics, Tissue Culture and Genetic Engineering.
1. B.Sc. : 6 semesters
2. M.Sc.: 4 semesters
3. Ph.D. : 3-5 years
The Botany department is equipped with several laboratories supervised
by faculty members. The department provides laboratory facilities to
under graduate and postgraduate students as well as research scholars.
The facilities includes; microscopy and photographic facilities, UV-VIS
spectrophotometer, Flame photometer, GPS system, Rotary evaporator,
Rotary shakers, Molecular biology, Tissue culture, Laminar flow chambers,
Fungus culture facility, Mushroom cultivation, herbarium, Polyhouse,
Glass house, Botanical garden for teaching and research. The
Department also subscribes National, International Books and journals in
botany.
Currently University maintained Central Instrumentation Facility (CIF).
The CIF has several sophisticated instruments; DNA sequencing facility,
Ultra centrifuge, Real time PCR, Flow Cytometry, NMR, Powder XRD, SEM,
TEM, AFM, ICPMS, FTIR, Nano spray drier and HPTLC.

The Department of Botany was established with the
inception of the University in 1946. Founder of the
department was great Prof. R. Misra, FNA., the father of
Ecology in India. Subsequently, it was nurtured under the
leadership of Prof. S.B. Saxena, FNA., in association with Prof.
Y.D. Tiyagi, Prof. L.P. Mall and many other stalwarts.
Department has been a centre of higher learning in Plant
Sciences and was recognized by University Grants
Commission as DRS, DSA and SAP. Botanic Garden of the
department is recognized by Botanic Garden Conservation
International, Kew, United Kingdom as an Ex-situ
conservation management center. Department has a credit
for the discovery of a large number of new species and
genera of fungi. The glory of department is evidenced by
alumni who are holding important position in Universities
and Institutes in India and abroad.
The department is now very well known for the excellent
research contributions made in the field of Plant–Pathology,
Ecology, Angiosperms Taxonomy, Limnology which have
been duly recognized by U.G.C as the major thrust areas.
