Experiential Education . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 10-13A rocketry class for elementary and middle school students is available. Students will build and launch their rockets, learn about the historyof rocketry, the aerospace industry and key pioneers in the field. Robotics Camp is offered to students who have completed seventh gradethrough high school. Two one-week sections of Instructional Welding in the Saipe Family Metal Arts Studio, our on-campus welding shop,are not to be missed for middle and high school students who love tools, metals, creativity, getting dirty and having fun! Four one week out-ings into the wilds of the Rocky Mountains will be offered to all middle and high school students. An international trip to India (pg. 12) isoffered to DA high school students only. Both the West Star Expeditions and “The World is Your Oyster”/India Trip require interview andassessment with program leaders before acceptance into the programs. “Broadway Blast” is for elementary, middle and high school actors wholove to sing. A final performance the last day of class will be the culminating activity.

Session I (Classes are from 8:00 am through 2:00 pm) isour long-standing program that has helped thousands ofDenver Academy and non-Denver Academy studentsstrengthen their math, reading and writing skills, workhabits, self concept and earn crucial credit toward highschool graduation.

There will be a short break for lunch for students takingclasses after 12:30 pm. Students are encouraged to bringtheir own lunches.

• Tardy/Absence Policy: students will not receive creditduring Session I if they miss more than two classesduring that session. Punctuality is expected forstudents enrolled in both sessions but this isparticularly important in the first session as threetardies equal one absence.

• Students are expected tocommunicate with their teachersabout making up work for anymissed classes

• Class size is limited to 14 students

• There will be no classes scheduledMonday, July 4th in observance of Independence Day

• Students can enroll in one, to as many as four classes

• High school students can receive a half (0.5) credit perclass upon completion of the course work.

• Report cards are generated for each student’s progressin Summer Session I. If you wish to meet with yourchild’s teacher at the conclusion of summer classes,contact that teacher directly.

Academic Courses June 6-July 8Session I (Five Weeks)

We’ve added a three week academic session (Classes arefrom 8:00am - 12:25pm) for elementary, middle andhigh school students in math, reading and writing. (Noacademic credit is offered in this session for highschool students.) What remains the same is theoutstanding instruction given by seasoned teachers whoare skilled and experienced in working with studentswith learning differences.

Our summer school courses are open to Denver Academy and non-Denver Academy students. To register please fill out the registration form on page 18 and return it as soon as possible.

All non-Denver Academy students must go to the Summer and Seasonal Programs link on our website and printout and complete all documents in the “Non-DA Elementary Form” or “ Non-DA Middle School and High SchoolForm.” These documents must be completed and submitted with the registration form along with a 10 percent

deposit to ensure enrollment.

It is strongly recommended that all non-Denver Academy high school students taking courses for credit verify that course grades and credits are transferable to their home school. (Session I Only)

HIGH SCHOOLAcademics

Algebra I*Chad Lindburg • 8:00am - 9:25am This course will cover the essentials of Algebra I, typicallycovered during the first semester. During the last week ofthe summer session we will begin touching on materialcovered during the second semester. The actual topicswill depend on the results of pre-testing during the firsttwo days of the session.

Algebra II*Chad Lindburg • 8:00am - 9:25am This course will highlight the more challenging materialcovered in Algebra II. These topics will include exponen-tial and logarithmic functions, and quadratic functions.We will also focus on specific areas highlighted during thepre-testing taking place the first two days of the session.

*These classes will be combined and instruction differentiateddepending upon the academic needs of each individual student.

ChemistryKyle Kirby • 8:00am- 9:25amStudents will be introduced to process skills such asgraphing, metrics and conversions, density, periodic table,chemical reactions, identifying compounds, balancingequations and how to write up a lab. Safety practices in alab will be learned and practiced throughout the class.

United States HistoryAndy Klaus-Corritore • 8:00am - 9:25amThis course will be a brief survey course of the social,political and economic development of the United States.It is ideal for those students needing American History tofulfill graduation requirements, or for those who justwant a review of major American historical concepts.

High School Writer’s WorkshopAndy Klaus-Corritore • 9:30am - 10:55amHigh school students are expected to competently pro-duce in a variety of writing genres: fiction, researchpapers, poetry, expository writing, essay development,oral presentations and the inevitable college applicationessay. Get a start in or hone your written expressionskills in this class that will challenge you according toeach student’s needs.

Study/Life SkillsGayle Bell • 9:30am - 10:55amLearn to be an advocate, hone your study skills, build self-confidence, write a resume, practice an interview and tastesamples of the adult life you are headed into! These areonly some of the topics that will be covered in this coursededicated to self-exploration and life skills. Students willalso learn time management and organizational strategiesthat can be incorporated into any curriculum. Class timewill be spent in a variety of environments. Outdoor edu-cation activities, team building initiatives and field tripswill be part of the weekly schedule.

LiteratureGayle Bell • 11:00am - 12:25pmThis course will focus on the enhancement of readingcomprehension at the high school level. Short stories andclass novels will be taught to increase not only readingcomprehension, but reading speed and enjoyment as well.

Geometry*Chad Lindburg • 11:00am - 12:25pmThis class will approach the basic tenets of geometry in adeductive reasoning approach. Students will explore geo-metric figures and discover properties from these explo-rations. In addition, students will learn how to applythese concepts in a variety of settings.

Pre-Calculus*Chad Lindburg • 11:00am - 12:25pmStudents will explore the six trigonometric functions andhow they are applied. Included in this are right triangles,unit circles, radians and trigonometric identities. Criticalthinking and problem solving will be stressed andapplied in projects to accompany class work.

*These classes will be combined and instruction differentiateddepending upon the academic needs of each individual student.

Spanish I**Ben Vega • 12:30pm - 1:55pmThis course is designed to teach students the basics ofSpanish which includes introductions, colors, days of theweek and counting from 1-100. We will introduce verbconjugations in the present tense as well as emphasizeculture and geography. This is a great class for studentslooking to fulfill a high school foreign language credit.

Spanish II**Ben Vega • 12:30pm - 1:55pmStudents will be learning verb conjugations in the futuretense, past tense and in the subjunctive. The cultures ofthe Mayan, Aztec, and Inca Empires will be studied.Advanced vocabulary such as objects in the house, cloth-ing and body parts, as well as speaking and writingaspects will be addressed.

Focus will be on literary terminology, multi-level comprehension and reading for enjoyment throughthe use of short stories and novels.

Denver Academy’s Summer School Programs for 2011 offer an exceptionalexploration of some of the world’s favorite destinations: the Taj Mahal in Agrawith camel-rides in Jaipur, and the Moghul Red Fort in Delhi as well as its com-plex of market bazaars. In addition we will train overnight to Amritsar, then toDharamsala where we walk among the surrounding Dhauladhar Ranges thattower above.

Here, among some of India's most beautiful mountain-meadow landscapes stu-dents will explore societies based on hard-working Tibetan refugees and Indianvillagers. Visits to small-irrigated farms that cling to mountain-side terraces willfascinate us. Tibetan handicraft ateliers will beckon us, while dozens of Hinduand Buddhist temples and monasteries invite us to listen to their chanting ormeditate a while. We will visit wildlife parks for endangered species and reviewenvironmental efforts to save the ecology of this remarkable, fragile region.Denver Academy’s 2011 Summer School Programs offer a unique combinationof cultural and travel experiences in one of the friendliest and most relaxedregions of the world. West Star Adventures Joins Denver Academy’sSummer Program…a Winning Combination!

West Star Adventures, a brainchild of Matt Brink, PsyD., a familiar face to the Denver Academy community in his five yearsas a counselor to all DA students, offers four one-week outings into the wilds of the Rocky Mountains this summer forDenver Academy and other middle and high school students.

Due to changing weather, snow-melt and early to late summer conditions of trail, mountain and river the location of eachexpedition’s journey will be announced prior to departure.

Dr. Brink employs skilled, experienced lead guides who are trained as therapists understanding the needs of children andhave worked extensively in outdoors/wilderness environments. Prospective participants will be assessed and interviewed byDr. Brink and his associates before admission to the program.

Expedition I: Departs Monday, June 6 and returns Friday, June 10Expedition II: Departs Monday, June 27 and returns Friday, July 1Expedition III: Departs Monday, July 25 and returns Friday, July 29Expedition IV: Departs Monday, August 1 and returns Friday, August 5

Does your child need specific tutoring? Results Learning teams with Denver Academy to give your child the prescriptiveand diagnostic attention and help she/he needs.

Results Learning at Denver Academy offers one-on-one and small group Academic Coaching and Tutoring customized toyour child’s learning style. Individual and/or group tutoring sessions are an effective way to provide intensive and prescrip-tive programs in reading, writing, spelling and math. Programs are offered before, after and in-between summer schoolclasses and camps. This service is also available independent of other program offerings.

Offerings:

F.AS.T. Reading Tutoring:The F.A.S.T. Reading Program founded by Denver Academy is an amaz-ing, systematic phonics based approach to reading. Prescriptive 20 and30 hour “intensive” packages are being offered and can quickly increaseyour child’s reading ability.

Customized Tutoring:Whether the need is spelling, writing or math, Results Learning tutorsare highly skilled in each subject matter and will teach your child usinghis or her strongest learning style. This approach allows your child torealize and utilize his or her learning style strengths while improvingsubject matter content and knowledge.

Non-Tutoring Supervision:Is your child in need of supervision during the morning or afternoonportions of his/her day? We have supervision and/or structured activitiesavailable at only $15.00 an hour or $22.50 for an hour-and-a-half block.

• A 10 percent non-refundable deposit must accompany all student registration forms to ensure enrollment.

• All non-Denver Academy students must go to the Summer and Seasonal Programs link on our website(www.denveracademy.org/summerandseasonalprograms). Print out and complete all documents in the“Non-DA Elementary Form or Non-DA Middle School and High School Form.” These documents mustbe completed and submitted with the registration form.

• If a high school student accrues more than two absences (3 tardies equal one absence) he/she will bewithdrawn from class. No credit will be awarded and no refunds given.

• No student will be able to attend Denver Academy Summer Courses or Camps until payment has beenreceived in full.

• Students who withdraw prior to the start of classes (June 6th) will be refunded 90 percent of the totalcost of tuition and fees of classes for which they are enrolled.

• Students who withdraw prior to the end of the first week (June 10th) will be refunded 50 percent of thetotal cost of tuition and fees of the classes for which they are enrolled.

• No refunds will be given to students withdrawing from classes after June 10th.

• All students should bring basic supplies for your classes on the first day. If specific suppliesare required, teachers will provide students with a list on the first day of class.

CREDIT for course completion:

• .5 credit will be issued upon successful completion of each high school academic course.

ACCREDITATION:

• Denver Academy is accredited by the Association of Colorado Independent Schools and the National Association of Independent Schools.
