Saturday May 7th

1st day in Crete We woke up in sunny Heraklion, in the Lato Hotel overlooking the old Venetian Harbour. Yes, that’s the view from our hotel room. Later in the day we took a taxi ride to our hotel in Hersonissos. It cost just €35 for a 30 minute scenic drive along the coastline. What a glorious day it was…

Breakfast in our hotel Ready for breakfast at Ida Village Resort, this is our booked accommodation for two weeks. We cannot believe we are paying just €22 per night, for the privilege of staying in an apartment surrounded by beautiful gardens, with a patio overlooking the pool and sea.

We received a warm welcome from Eri, the practice manager and Dr. George Antonopoulos DDS. Ingrid will have her consultation first.

Ingrid’s Consultation and Initial Treatment Ingrid explained to Dr. George, that she was bothered by an old front crown. It never matched her natural teeth in both size or colour, and would like a new one. Dr. George explained her options, between all ceramic and porcelain crowns.

She could have a porcelain crown with all-porcelain shoulders for €360 including a new post, or a Zirconium for €460. Ingy would love a Zirconium crown, but Dr. Antonopoulos pointed out that he could only

confirm if it was feasible, after consulting with the dental lab. This is due to an old post & core supporting the old crown being too large.

Ingy’s Options

1 porcelain crown with all-porcelain shoulders

and a 1 new post& core for:

€360 or ₤290

Or

1 Zirconium crown and a 1 new post & core for:

€460 or ₤370

Patrick’s Consultation I explained to Dr. George, that I would like to redo my ugly lower front teeth. They are crooked, crowded, and discoloured, and I am really self-conscious about them.

Dr. George examined me, took impressions of my upper and lower teeth. The lab will make a model so that Dr. George can plan and design the required dental revisions.

Just a couple of minutes after seeing Dr George Antonopoulos for our dental consultation, Ingy and I walked to the beautiful Hersonissos old harbour and relaxed and dined in a waterfront restaurant. On the way passed through shopping streets filled with enticing goods! This is why we call it a dental HOLIDAY….

Patrick’s Consultation – Dr. Antonopoulos’s concerns and review Dr. George explained to me that he could not in good faith, recommend a fast fix of my lower front teeth. We had both thought that he might improve the aesthetics of the lower teeth via crown treatments. But, my lifelong teeth grinding have caused my teeth and prosthetic restorations to become shorter with time and have also changed shape. There is simply not enough space in my mouth to make natural looking new crowns….

Patrick’s Options

Complete upper and lower jaw restoration to

create a harmonious smile and correct overbite.

Upper Jaw: 1 telescopic denture and 2 porcelain

Lower Jaw: 6 porcelain crowns

Patrick’s Consultation – Dr. Antonopoulos recommendation

Dr George recommended remaking my worn-down upper-jaw denture first to gradually teach my jaw-joint to close in a new position. Afterwards he can proceed in restoring my lower arch. This is a process that requires a month here. Alternatively, he could restore just my three natural lower incisor front teeth to improve colour and alignment. But there was no point in restoring the existing misshapen crowns. The new crowns would have to be the same shape or they could break from impact. I cannot stay for longer this time due to previous commitments. I consulted with Ingy and Dr. George. I will come back in September to start treatment. I do not want to miss out on this unique opportunity to get a nice smile, at such a low price, in such a lovely place

Ingy’s 1st Fitting Ingy sat in the chair at the clinic, with Dr. George and Aris the dental technician for a first fitting of the metal frame and to select the exact colour match for her new revised crown.

Meticulous George and Aris conferred and decided that in her case, we would take a short trip to the lab to use a precision instrument called a photometer to take an exact reading. They explained that teeth are not all one colour, it's the subtle graduations that give them a natural look.

Exploring…

We picked up a little rental car and decided to drive along the coast to Malia and Sissi. Somehow our GPS took us off the main road and up a steep route into the mountains. We negotiated hair-pin bends one after another, and after taking in the spectacular views, arrived at a little mountainside village called Vrachasi.

On one side of the road were houses and a cafe, and on the other side seating and an incredible vista across the valley to another mountain.. We were greeted like old friends by everyone around. We sat and chatted in this enchanted place for an hour or two, breathing fresh air, and eating freshly made Greek salad, hand cut chips and home baked bread. What a wonderful day!

Ingy’s & Patrick’s Dental Holiday to Crete Monday 16th May

Relaxing… Today Ingy and I decided to take it easy by the lovely apartment pool. We soaked up the Cretan sun, and ordered cooling drinks from the bar and totally unwound. If you look across the pool to the parasol behind, our apartment and patio is on the upper level facing the pool and ocean beyond.

Later that same day Ingy and I took a very short drive to explore historic Old Hersonissos town, which sits on an elevated position away from the harbour. As always we were greeted by the most friendly local people and traders

Sightseeing… After a brief educational visit to the dental lab, Ingy and I had a waterside lunch in the town of Agios Nikolaos. We then drove a little further along the coast to Elounda, the sophisticated coastal resort enclave . Both places were very picturesque. Our final stop that day was to take a short boat ride from Plaka to Spinalonga, a small island directly opposite. It is where people suffering from leprosy were exiled and isolated. There’s an air of stillness and tranquility surrounding this living museum.

On our return to the mainland, we took the mountain route back to Hersonissos, simply awestruck by the scenery and views all the way.

More Exploring Today having no appointments, we decided to take a drive into the mountains behind Hersonissos. Our destination was the Lasithe Plateau, about 30 minutes away from our resort. The drive was absolutely spectacular as we climbed higher and higher, when we reached the summit we were greeted by a cluster of spinning windmills. Looking back we could see to the coast and towns far below The plateau was astonishing, a huge fertile valley surrounded by a ring of mountains. Lush and green, with a cluster of villages making up this unique community

Ingrid has got a new Crown! My beautiful wife is back in the GDA dental chair for the final fitting of her new upper front incisor crown.

A few minutes later, Dr George hands her the mirror to take a look. All the skill, care and attention has made it a perfect result. Both George and Ingy are delighted. It has taken just 10 days to completion. The new crown is a perfect match to her natural teeth!

Last Dinner in our favourite taverna It’s our final night in Hersonissos and we returned for a 4th time to our favourite family Taverna to enjoy some authentic Cretan food. The place is just along from the apartment where we stayed and it’s called Tarentella owned by the friendly Nikos family. My dish is stifado and Ingy’s pork fillet with fruit sauce. What a romantic sunset over Hersonissos Harbour later that same night

Goodbye… After 2 glorious weeks on our dental holiday it was time to leave Hersonissos and fly home from Heraklion. We’d had a wonderful time at Gentle Dental Abroad and on all of our sightseeing drives, boat trips, and walks. Time for just one more poolside breakfast at Ida Village I & II

As we boarded our EasyJet flight home, the cabin crew announced that our aircraft was brand new and had just come into service. We settled back sad to be leaving, but so happy with Ingy’s new smile and my plan for a visit later in the year.
