• Objectives– Discuss dental diseases– Examine how oral health effects the

body– Review ways to maintain good oral

health– Discuss oral health and pregnancy– Review ways to keep baby’s mouth

healthy

Overview of Dental BSS

• Created by the Association of State and Territorial Dental Directors (1970’s)

• Non-invasive oral health screening• Notes the presence of caries, fillings,

and sealants or ECC; estimates treatment urgency

• Done by medical or dental professionals

Importance

• Take a snapshot of the state’s oral health needs

• Plan OH programs for the state• Evaluate the effectiveness of

existing programs

Dental BSS Trainers

• Participate in a calibration training conference call

• Provide training• Submit sign sheet and training

evaluations• Provide feedback on the training

Strengths

• Great Opportunity– Increase oral health awareness– Introduce the Dental BSS– Established new partners

• RDH Trainers – Well qualified– Receive excellent evaluations on

training and presentation skills

• Resources for the Healthy Start Coalitions Community Liaisons to encourage pediatrician training on fluoride varnish application and anticipatory guidance.

• Encourage medical/dental collaborations focused on preventive and treatment services.

Outcomes

• Building a statewide system of trained healthcare professionals.

• Implementing surveillance requires partnering with many groups in the state and can assist in establishing a broad based group participating with future oral health surveillance initiatives.
