Future Directions

Year 10 students and their families have been participating in Future Directions interviews at both campuses during the last week. This is a critical part in working with parents and students to develop a curriculum across the college that maximises the use of the combined resources of both campuses and ensures that we are best able to meet the needs and interests of our students.

My thanks go to Mrs Murphy, Mrs Chapman and Mrs Kissell for their organisation of this major event. Thanks, too, to the many parents and family members who were able to make themselves available to meet with college staff.

International Conference

Mr Hastings and I were recently part of a delegation of NSW secondary principals that attended the International Confederation of Principals’ Conference in Helsinki, Finland. Finland has been the centre of a lot of international attention in recent years as a result of their outstanding results in international assessments conducted by the OECD.

Over 1,200 principals from schools all over the world met together to discuss international trends in education. The week-long conference included 8 international keynote speakers and four workshop sessions on a wide range of topics.

Whilst there, I co-presented a paper with other senior executive members of the NSW Secondary Principals’ Council with a particular focus on educational reforms in NSW public schools.

Kids Teaching Kids Conference 2015

As part of the Denison College enrichment program Year 7 students from Kelso High Campus and Bathurst High Campus have been working together to better understand the importance of sustainability for the future of our environment and in particular, agriculture.

The Kids Teaching Kids program aims to inspire future environmental leaders by empowering young people to become experts in an area of sustainability and then create a workshop to teach what they have learned to other students. The program was started by former Young Australian of the Year, Aaron Wood and has been running for 15 years.

This year two Year 7 classes from the College took on the challenge of learning about an environmental or agricultural issue and created workshops that were shared at our own mini- conference held at Bathurst High Campus in Week 3. One group from each campus was then selected to represent Denison College at the Kids Teaching Kids Conference hosted by Red Bend Catholic College in Forbes on August 6th.

After some final preparation 18 enthusiastic ambassadors set off to present their workshops accompanied by Miss Townend from Kelso High and Miss Burt and Mr Matus from Bathurst High. The team from Kelso presented an interactive and well-received workshop on the impact of pest animals and the Bathurst High team performed a highly energetic and engaging workshop about water sustainability. Throughout the day the students also participated in workshops presented by other schools from around the Central West. It was a very positive day that created a lot of hope for the future because of all the capable young people taking an interest in the environment. Even if the bus trip home did take a little longer than expected due to some mechanical difficulties!!

Student success in the Australian History Competition

The Australian History Competition is a nationwide competition held each year in May, testing the students’ knowledge, comprehension and source skills broadly based on the Australian History Curriculum. Students complete 50 multiple choice questions in 45 minutes with questions ranging from easy to challenging. This year 25 students from Year 10 participated in the competition with many earning fantastic results.

The HSIE faculty extends its congratulations to all who participated and particularly to those students whose excellent results are listed below.

Year 12 Showcase

On Monday the 3rd of August Year 12 Drama students showcased their Individual Projects and Group Performance that they have been developing as part of their HSC Drama course. The performances showcased the talent and dedication of the Year 12 Drama class with a vast range of performances from the satirical to the tragic.

The first group performance ‘MediaBlahh’, developed by Thomas Billington, Breanna Clarke and Isabella Fenton, is a satirical portrayal of morning news programs. The group’s energetic parody of three former ABC journalists struggling to navigate the materialistic world of morning

Page 4: DENISON COLLEGE OF SECONDARY EDUCATION KELSO HIGH … · Michael Sloan Principal College Principal’s Report - August 2015 Future Directions Year 10 students and their families have

news programs is a hilarious rollercoaster that questions the ethical dimensions of what we deem as ‘the real news’. The second group performance ‘The Final Judgement’, developed by Hamish Nancarrow, Emily Hayes, Cooper Bourke and Lauren Miles, is a striking portrayal of a man’s fight for his afterlife in purgatory. The group’s darkly comical portrayal of a man on trial for his ‘sins’ twists the blame for his actions upon the vices that seek to condemn him.

Five students also showcased their Individual Projects – four of which were performances. Cooper Bourke, Lauren Miles, Emily Hayes and Breanna Clarke all took to the stage to perform their monologues that they have been developing throughout the year. From the chilling tale of a shark-hunter to the outrage of a check-out-chick, the high standard of the storytelling from these students is a showcase of their commitment and dedication to the craft of storytelling. Isabella Fenton’s Individual Project for Costume Design for the play ‘Spring Awakening’ was also displayed. The intricacy of the six costumes that she has developed for a production of the play demonstrates her artistic talent and her understanding for the symbolic capacity of costumes in the theatre.

The night was a chance for students to showcase their work and their talent in the art of Drama. I am sure all the parents, teachers and students who attended the night were all thrilled to see how talented these students really are!

WHERE ARE THEY NOW? An ongoing series highlighting the achievements of Kelso High Campus ex-students.

In future newsletters I will tell you about as yet ‘anonymous’ successful past KHC students, but to start I will retell the journeys of our Decade Award recipients since 1997! They have all completed their secondary education at Kelso High, in some cases up to 30 years ago! All have gone on to achieve success in their chosen field. Their success might be academic, career / business related, in the field of community service or cultural activity. Here are the first 5 ‘stars’.

Alison Franks graduated from Kelso in 1986. She received 1st class Honours in Science at Sydney University, and went on to gain a Doctorate of Philosophy. She was a Postdoctoral Research Scientist in Molecular Science at University of Colorado, USA. Her area of specialty was Cellular and Developmental Biology. Since returning to Australia Alison has joined the ranks of Secondary High School Science teaching in Sydney.

Anthony Stockman graduated from Kelso in 1982. He completed his Electrical Trades Course with Honours, was NSW Apprentice of the Year, and then started his own business in Bathurst – AJS Electrical Contracting. Anthony has trained many other successful apprentices – including several other KHS students who went on to win medals at International Skill Championships. He has won a Bathurst Business award, as well as the NSW ‘Employer of the Year’ Award in 2008.

Derek Walker graduated in 1988. While studying at the University of NSW, Derek won a Ben Lexcen Sporting Scholarship. His interest in cycling / triathlon saw him win a $20 000 Award in Science & Technology for his invention of the FLY disc wheel (every triathlete in the world uses it). This led him onto developing new prosthetic technology.

Emma Leslie graduated in 1989. After graduating from Canberra’s ANU, she has gone on to work in the field of Peace Studies & Conflict Resolution. She is presently the Director of the Centre for Peace & Conflict Studies in Cambodia, and she was part of a group nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize in 2005. She is a highly sort after International author, adviser, consultant, evaluator, tutor, researcher and advocate for Peace.

Elizabeth Rapley graduated in 1985. After earning a Bachelor of Science 1st Class Honours in Human Genetics, and a PhD in Human Molecular Genetics from Sydney University, Elizabeth was head hunted to a Research Scientist position at the Cancer Genetics Institute in Surrey, England. She is still in the UK, and continues to do research in a study of world-wide importance - identifying and mapping genes in cancer tumours.

What’s Uni Like?

What’s Uni Like? is a free massive open online course (MOOC) developed to foster aspiration in young people who would not traditionally consider university as a post-school option, with the ultimate goal of encouraging and broadening participation in Australia’s higher education sector. What’s Uni Like? has been in development for the past 18 months and is now available for registration. The course is aimed at those from 14-22 years of age and addresses the key areas of academic writing and reading, student expectations, digital literacy and online learning skills. What’s Uni Like? is accessible, engaging and self-paced. The course includes video, animation, quizzes, reading and writing exercises and an online forum where participants can discuss what they are learning and exchange ideas. At completion the students will have attained an awareness of: o the various pathways into university; o the knowledge and confidence to successfully

transition and participate in university life; o academic skills required for successful study

and a greater understanding of the opportunities higher education offers.

How is it offered? The course is delivered online, can be started anytime and is self-paced. The entire course takes approximately 12 hours to finish. Students complete 3 modules: o Uni – is it for me? o Uni – what should I expect? o Uni – what academic skills will I need?

At the end of each module they are awarded a certificate of completion that details the skills and learning outcomes they have acquired. Students, TAFE and other institutions are able to establish a private cohort or closed groups within What’s Uni Like?, and can monitor use and rewards for completion.

Who is it for? What’s Uni Like? is being offered to all Australian university aspiration programs, higher education providers and secondary school students. The resource is informed by current research and best practice. The project was developed by Charles Sturt University and funded by the Federal government through its Higher Education Participation and Partnerships Program (HEPPP), but in the spirit of HEPPP, is unbranded. What’s Uni Like? has been created to help increase participation in tertiary

education by students from low socio-economic status (SES) backgrounds from any location in Australia.
