Craig Thomas Craig and Rosalyn

Thomas, parents of six children, 27 grandchildren, and six great-grandchil-dren, have called Tabiona home their entire lives. A full-time rancher, Craig runs approximately 100 head of moth-er cows and 100 yearling steers.

Craig loves good horses, fine friends, and a family who helps him with the cattle and the farm. He’s enjoyed working hard on

the ranch over the years and is grateful for the help and support he’s received from family. Craig’s been involved with many district and county water committees and the county Farm Service Agency, as well as with 4-H programs and other boards and activities over the years. Some of his honors include receiving Duchesne County’s Cattleman of the Year and Farmer of the Year awards, as well as the Golden Shovel award from the Uintah Basin Water Summit. He represented Duchesne County at the Ogden Pioneer Days for the 2015 Nation-al Day of the American Cowboy. He and Rosalyn were also honored to serve as the Grand Marshals for the 2016 Duchesne County Fair. Craig has served many years on the Duchesne and Strawberry River water board. He also served on the Duchesne County Water Conservancy District board. They call themselves fortunate to have many friends throughout the Basin, especially in Duchesne County. Craig is honored to be this year’s legendary cow-boy and represent Duchesne County.

Levaughn & Karla Gines Levaughn Gines has lived in Tabiona his entire live except for a short time of working in Salt Lake City. He worked mostly for Chevron Pipeline for 24 years before retiring in 1994 when he and Karla started Cross-roads Concrete Co. Levaughn was involved with the Tabiona Rodeo for over 40 years. The rodeo was held on ground belonging to Levaughn’s parents Ferron and Nina Gines, for many years. Levaughn then acquired the “Tabiona Rodeo Grounds” and a large part of the production of that rodeo, along with the Tabiona Conchos riding club. Surely some of you have great memories of the Old Tabiona Rodeo Grounds and Levaughn’s persuasive way of selling raffle tickets. The Tabiona Rodeo has now moved to the Centennial Park in Tabiona and now Levaughn just attends the rodeo and gives advice. He has turned the rodeo production over to the younger generation, including his son, Jake. Levaughn is a past member of the Duchesne County Fair Board and a lifelong supporter of the Duchesne County Fair. He looks forward to biding at the livestock sale each year. Karla Gines was raised in the Salt Lake area but visited Tabiona and always dreamed of living in the beautiful little valley. In 1983 she made acquaintance

Duchesne County-Grand Marshals Legendary Cowboy

Chad & Joan Mortensen Duchesne county residents Chad and Joan Mortensen are glad to be a part of Duchesne county fair as Grand Marshals. Chad was born and raised in Roosevelt, Utah, graduating from Union High School and from the College of Eastern Utah. Upon returning to Roosevelt he took over the family owned business Marion’s Variety in 1992. He married his wife Joan Hack-ing Mortensen of Vernal, Utah in 1997. Joan graduated from Uintah High school and attended Dixie College. She is employed at USDA Rural Development. Chad and Joan have been active in many roles in the community. One of their favorites is UBIC which they have been active in for over 20 years. They have had many different roles from working as food vendors to now being on the Board of Directors. Chad is active with the Duchesne County Chamber of Commerce, Roosevelt Business Alliance, and the UBTech Culinary Arts Board. He has also assisted in other community events. Joan has been on several different committees; a board member for the Family Support Center, Presi-dent of the Roosevelt Golf Committee, and an officer for the Roosevelt Ladies Golf Association. Chad, Joan, and their daughter Mary love to do many things throughout the Basin such as going to the mountains, golfing, scenic drives throughout the Ba-sin, and spending time with friends and family. We are honored to be selected as this year’s marshals. Chad and Joan enjoy being able to serve their community whether it be at a social event or over the counter of the store. See GINES on 7

with Levaughn at Defa’s Dude Ranch and they have been partners ever since. Levaughn gained two chil-dren, Greg and Natalie when he married Karla and they added two more, Jake and Lindsay, to complete the family. They enjoyed watching their kids participate in sports, rodeo and horse racing and are now mov-ing on to watch the grandkids participate in anything they want to do. They are grandparents of Shaden and Carli of Grantsville; Austin, Kayela, Kamryn and Kendall of Tabiona. Karla drove the school bus in Tabiona for 25 years before retiring in 2015. In marrying Levaughn, Karla also became a big part of producing the Tabiona Rodeo for the past 37 years and instrumental establish-ing the Centennial Park in Tabiona. The Tabiona Rodeo is now located at the beautiful new facility, but some say it isn’t the same. Levaughn, along with Jake, continues to man-age Crossroads Concrete and operate the Gines Fam-ily Ranch. Karla is retired (mostly). Recently, Levaughn discovered RZR riding and proved that you can take the boy off of the farm. Levaughn and Karla are delighted to be your Duchesne County Fair Grand Marshals for 2020.

Ned LeDoux Concert

Due to the difficult circumstances these past couple of months, Duchesne County would like to pay it forward in offering FREE entertainment Wednesday night of the Duchesne County Fair with Ned LeDoux in concert! One of the most incredible things about great music is that it has the ability to take the listener to a place they’d rather be. A compelling song can carry someone back in time to a treasured memory, or trans-port a person to a spectacular western prairie they’ve only visited in their dreams. Ned LeDoux’s music has that kind of power. As a songwriter, he has a knack for bringing people, places and emotions vibrantly to life with his insightful lyrics, and warm, strong voice that makes him sound like a beloved friend you always want to hang out with. Those gifts are fully on display on LeDoux’s new album Next In Line. “I’m writing my own story and if people take a lik-ing to it, that’s wonderful,” says LeDoux. “As long as I’m writing from the heart, and writing about what I know, I can definitely listen back to it and be proud.” LeDoux has good reason to be proud of Next In Line. It’s populated with songs that reflect his roots and honor the hard-working characters who have influ-enced his life; like his grandfather, Bud Rhoads, who he tips his cowboy hat to with the earnest tribute “Worth It”. He celebrates his brother Beau on the up-beat “A Cowboy is All” and he closes the album by putting his own spin on his famous father, Chris LeDoux’s “Homegrown Western Saturday Night”. “I’m proud to carry on the tra-dition and a lot of songs that I write are going to relate with songs that my dad wrote and recorded because I lived the same life,” the young singer/songwriter says. “I was born and raised on a ranch, which my family still owns outside of Kaycee, Wyoming. That was my life and it’s reflected in the songs I

WEDNESDAY, AUG. 5, 7 P.M.OUTDOOR ARENA

write. I just think back to those days working on a ranch and hanging out with my granddad, who taught me how to drive a tractor, work cows and everything that is associated with ranching, but music has always been my dream.” LeDoux began pursuing that dream at an early age, and even though he grew up in the shadow of his legendary father, he’s successfully carved his own path. “If I can be half the man he was I think I’ll be okay,” he says with an easygoing grin, “but when it comes to songwriting I’ve got to write my own story. I’ve played drums for years and got my first band when I was in junior high. I went on to play drums with my dad from 1998 until he passed away in 2005, and then I started doing solo gigs.” Ned LeDoux is carrying on the family tradition, but he’s also charting his own course, and Next In Line is the latest step on that journey. “I hope I inspire people to never forget where you came from,” he says. “That’s one thing I’m very proud of. I’m carrying on a tradi-tion, but I’m writing my own story. I’m very proud of my family and friends and there’s one piece of advice my mom gave me when we were kids: ‘Never forget where you came from and show respect to people no matter where you are.’ So with this album I hope to inspire and show people, ‘Hey this old cowboy isn’t changing for nobody.’ I want people to know they should never give up on a dream. There’s always time. Just keep on go-ing.”
