The light will typically flash when the system is activated (during heavy breaking, cornering, slipping in snow or on mud etc.).

Color is King

For the most part, a symbol in red indicates a potentially serious problem or safety issue. It is also

used to indicate an important reminder.Yellow/orange mean something needs to be serviced or

repaired soon. If the symbol is flashing, it is truly important that you contact your

dealer. Agreen or blue symbol is for information only, telling you that a system is on or is operating.

We start with the most serious of the symbols and move in a rough descending order of importance.

This is somewhat subjective, particularly if you are seeing something you don’t recognize!

Warning Symbols – the Truly Serious Ones

If you see any of the following symbols on your dashboard, take no chances. Stop you vehicle

immediately and find an authorized repair facility. We start with a text symbol here, because it cannot be ignored in this set as it indicates a brake issue. Click the links for more information.

Information Displays and Message Centers

In what is a very, very useful trend, vehicle manufacturers are using more and more information

displays to inform drivers of what features are in use, how they are operating, and what maintenance,

if any, may be needed. What are shown are examples only. There are simply too many possibilities

and iterations.

Note that if you are seeing something new on your instrument panel that appears to be informational only, check to see that a ‘display’ button has not been hit accidentally and thus changing what you are typically used to seeing.

Control Assist System Symbols and Indicators

The latest vehicle advances combine features old, such as Anti-lock Brakes (ABS), and new, like

Stability Control, into Assist Systems. They have their own unique symbols and indicators, some of

which, unlike ABS, use different teminologies to describe exactly the same thing.

Multiple Light Syndrome

The Check Engine light is included here because if this indicator light is on, one or another of the

driver assist systems will be deactivated and its associated light will be on. For instance, the Stability

Control Systems take cues from the engine and the brakes. Thus if the Check Engine, Drivetrain, ABS

Page 17: den tin hieu a

or Suspension trouble lights are active, the Stability Control Off (DSC, VDC, etc.,) indicator lights will

also be illuminated.

Some specialty systems will also shut down associated advanced systems. Thus, for example, if Low Speed Assist is in use or you have locked the differential for additional traction, Stability Control will be unavailable. Etc.

2nd Start Indicator Symbols and Tell-tales

2nd Start Indicator symbol. This feature, if switched on, causes the vehicle to move from a

standing start in a higher gear in slippery conditions. The light will be on when the feature is activated,

which is done manually using a button on the dashboard or center console.

4 Wheel Active Steer Warning Symbol Symbols and Tell-tales

This is the 4 Wheel Active Steer (4WAS) Warning IndicatorSymbol. If the light comes on

while the engine is running, it may indicate that there is a malfunction in the 4WAS system. If a

malfunction has occured in the system, the 4WAS function will not function, but the vehicle can be

steered and can continue to be driven with caution.

The manufacturer recommends turning the ignition Off and back On to cycle the engine and the 4WAS

system. The light may then go out.

4 Wheel Drive Indicators Symbols and Tell-tales

4 Wheel Drive Low Indicator symbol. This indicates that the 4 wheel drive is engaged at a

low gear ratio. It is useful when maximum power or traction is needed for steep climbs, sandy or

muddy conditions, or off-road driving.

Corresponding 4 Wheel Drive High indicator. It is the default setting in a 4 wheel drive

vehicle for normal driving conditions. For this reason, vehicle manufacturers rarely add this indicator.

Page 31: den tin hieu a

4 Wheel, All Wheel Drive Trouble Indicators Symbols and Tell-tales

4 Wheel Drive (4WD) Trouble Indicator symbol. This light will only be illuminated if there is

a malfunction in the 4WD system. The light will also come on if the front wheel or tire diameters are

different from those on the rear. The vehicles speed should be reduced immediately and taken to your

dealer as soon as possible for servicing.

This is a trouble light for what one manufacturer calls itsSuper Handling All Wheel Drive.

The vehicle should be serviced as soon as possible. If the light comes on while driving, the differential

temperature is too high and the vehicle should be pulled over to allow it to cool. The light will then go

out.

Antilock Braking System Trouble Lights Symbols and Tell-tales

ABS stands for Antilock Braking System. The symbol below is the Canadian version, and

below that, an older version. The ABS system helps to keep the car from skidding out of control during

braking in slippery or extreme braking conditions by limiting your wheels from locking up.

If any of these lights come on during normal driving, the system is likely malfunctioning and

the vehicle should be brought to your dealer as soon as possible. The vehicle can be driven, but at

your own risk. The brakes will function as normal, without the benefit of the anti-lock system. This

means that in slippery conditions, the driver must control any tendency for the wheels to lock during

braking.

The symbol to the left is a European version of the ABS warning indicator. A skidding

vehicle is shown inside the circle and brackets traditionally used to denote ‘brake components’, also

seen in the symbol above with the ABS acronym inside.

Note that in some vehicles you can turn off the ABS (or the traction control system), in

which case the light will remain on.

Active Cruise Control Indicator Symbols and Tell-tales

Page 32: den tin hieu a

Active Cruise Control Indicator symbol. This symbol adds a car to the speedometer and

arrow in the previous symbol. Again, unfortunately it is not immediately clear to the average

driver just what it is trying to say.

Variously called Radar Controlled or Adaptive Cruise Control(ACC), the systems operate

the same way. It is not warning of an immenent collision, but rather showing that the cruise control

system will maintain the speed needed to maintain the proper distance between your vehicle and the

one ahead of you.

AFS Off Symbol Symbols and Tell-tales

AFS in this symbol or indicator stands for Adaptive Front-lighting System, and indicates

that the system is turned off. A flashing AFS light indicates a fault in the system, amd your dealer will

be needed for a repair.

Adaptive lighting moves the direction of the headlights left or right in concert with the steering. When

the system is off, the headlights work as they have for a century, so there is no need to be concerned.

If you are surprised by the light, an on/off switch may have been accidentally been tripped on the

dashboard or inside a menu found in an instrument panel display.

SRS Air Bag Indicator Symbols Symbols and Tell-tales

These are the Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) Air Bag Indicator symbols. Either of

warning lights indicate that a problem exists with one of the many airbags in the vehicle, which should

be taken to the dealer as soon as possible.

In most later-model vehicles, the picture symbol above replaces the original text symbol,

shown to the left, which uses the simple Supplemental Restraint System acronym, SRS.

Yet another version, used by some European manufacturers, is a simple Air Bag text

symbol, as shown at left. All versions warn of a failure in one of the air bags, which can only be

repaired by your dealer.

Antilock Braking System Trouble Lights Symbols and Tell-tales

Page 33: den tin hieu a

ABS stands for Antilock Braking System. The symbol below is the Canadian version, and

Note that in some vehicles you can turn off the ABS (or the traction control system), in

which case the light will remain on.

Transmission Oil Temperature Indicator Symbols and Tell-tales

Automatic Transmission Oil Temperature Indicator symbol. It means exactly

what it says, that the oil temperature in the transmission is too high, which risks transmission  failure.

Some manufacturers show the symbol as amber. This indicator is generally available in 4-wheel drive

vehicles with towing packages.

A/T Park Warning Indicator Symbol Symbols and Tell-tales

A/T Park Indicator Warning symbol. This light comes on when a vehicle’s 4 wheel drive shifter is in neutral (N). A drive gear cannot be engaged until either 4 Low or 4 High is chosen. The light will also be active when there is a malfunction in the Park mechanism of the transmission. If this is the case, the vehicle must be inspected by your dealer as soon as possible.Brake Hold Indicator Symbols

Symbols and Tell-tales

Page 34: den tin hieu a

Brake Hold Indicator and the Automatic Hold Indicator symbols. The lights

describe systems that keeps the brakes applied when the vehicle is stopped and other conditions are

met. They indicate that the system is on and functioning properly.

Depending on the vehicle’s manufacturer, when in actual use, the indicator may

show Hold, as shown to the left. The brakes are released when the driver steps on the gas while in a

drive gear.

All Wheel Drive Trouble Indicator Symbols and Tell-tales

This is the All Wheel Drive (AWD) Trouble Indicator symbol. This light will be on when All-

Wheel Drive is disengaged and the drive mechanism is switched to Front Wheel Drive for maintenance

or if there is a problem with the system.

The symbol will flash if the vehicle is fitted with tires of differing diameters or if the air pressure in any

of the tire drops dramatically. The TPMS light will also then be lit, if equiped.

Center Differential Lock Indicator Symbols Symbols and Tell-tales

Center Differential Lock Indicator symbols. The option to lock the differential may be

available in an all-wheel drive vehicle. Turn it on if you become stuck in mud or snow, or if you are

driving on a loose surface off road at low speeds. A symbol featuring all four wheels will appear on the

instrument panel when the lock is in use.

Any traction control feature in the vehicle will be deactivated by this action as well so that you can use

the traction of all four wheels.

If this system is accidentally engaged, your vehicle will hitch and buck and feel like it is

going to tear itself apart at normal speeds. Look for the symbol on your dash or console and

disengage the system. Drive forward or backward a few feet to complete the disengagement.

The indicator may turn up as a text symbol, like this All Wheel Drive (AWD) Lock Indicator.

It means the same as the images above.

Brake Trouble Light Symbols and Tell-tales

Page 35: den tin hieu a

This symbol, and the Canadian version below, could indicate a serious Brake problem, but

the light will also be on when the hand/emergency brake is engaged. So, if you are sure the

hand/emergency brake is released, bring your vehicle to a stop as soon as possible and contact your

dealer. To continue driving could well be dangerous.

Brake trouble light in Canada, and other areas. The look of the Canadian symbols involving

brakes are supposed to resemble the physical appearance of brakes. They do, but primarily only to

people who have had the opportunity to take them apart. The word ‘brake’ may appear at the top of

the image.

Note that the symbol of a circle with “brackets” on either side, broken or otherwise, represents brake

components. What is shown inside and the details of the “brackets” and color specify the nature of

the problem.

Blind Spot Warning / Monitoring System Symbol Symbols and Tell-tales

Blind Spot Warning System symbol. The light indicates a problem with the system, which

monitors the areas on either side of the vehicle just behind the driver for unseen vehicles and

obstructions. The malfunction will not effect any driving systems.

Alternatively, a text symbol with the acronym BSM, or Blind Spot Monitor, may be seen on

the instrument panel. It also indicates a problem with the system.

Check Engine Light Symbols Symbols and Tell-tales

These are Check Engine light symbols, some of the oldest and easily the most common

and recognizable of the symbols that you may see. The word “Check” may appear inside the image of

the engine, or below, or not at all.

The possible reasons for it coming on number in the thousands and only your dealer can

properly address them. However, remember that a loose or missing gas cap will cause the light to

come on. This is the only solution available to the average driver, so do check that it is on and tight

(make sure it clicks at least once).

Page 36: den tin hieu a

If other symbols are also active, note that the Check Engineis your first concern. In some

cases, other systems in the car may be shut down until the reason the Check Enginelight is active is

addressed, and the symbols associated with those symbols may be activated.

Check Gas Cap Indicators Symbols and Tell-tales

These are Check Gas Cap Indicatorsymbols. If you see either of these, stop

the vehicle in a safe place and make sure the gas cap is tightened properly. Ignore this light

and the Check Engine light will likely come on next.

Check Suspension Indicator Symbols and Tell-tales

Check Suspension Indicator symbol. This light indicates a possible fault in the suspension

system, which should be checked by your dealer as soon as possible.

Collision Mitigation Brake System Indicator Symbols and Tell-tales

This is the Collision Mitigation Brake System (CMBS) Indicator symbol. It is a radar-based system that

can warn a driver of a potential collission or even apply the brakes to prevent one. The light comes on

if the system has been turned off, if the radar sensor is dirty or blocked, or if there is a fault in the

system. In the last case, take the vehicle to your dealer for diagnosis and repair.

Cruise (Speed) Control Indicators Symbols and Tell-tales

Cruise Control Text Indicator light. This light is illuminated when the cruise control is

engaged. It is perfectly straightforward, as opposed to the two symbols that are now often used in its

place.

Some manufacturers use this light in amber when the system is on but not engaged. It will also

be amber to indicate a system malfunction.

Page 37: den tin hieu a

Cruise Control Indicator symbol. This is a new symbol that replaces the simple word

“Cruise” that is sometimes still used. Unfortunately, it is not immediately obvious to most what this

symbol represents, until it is explained.

It is, of course a representation of a speedometer, with a pointer indicating a speed. A second version

in more advanced systems is even more confusing.

And last but not least, the Active Cruise Control Indicatorsymbol. This symbol adds a car to

the speedometer and arrow in the previous symbol. Again, unfortunately it is not immediately clear to

the average driver just what it is trying to say.

Variously called Radar Controlled or Adaptive, the systems operate the same way. It is not warning of

an imminent collision, but rather showing that the cruise control system will maintain the speed needed

to maintain the proper distance between your vehicle and the one ahead of you.

Set Indicator. Some manufacturers use Set to indicate that a speed has been chosen. It

may be used to indicate a system problem. It will blink if that is the case.

Daytime Running Lamps Symbol Symbols and Tell-tales

This is the Daytime Running Lamps (DRL) symbol. This light will be on whenever the

running lamps are switched on. A DRL system is required on all vehicles first sold in Canada. The

system causes the low-beam headlamps to be turned on when the car is running in daylight.

In European models, the text symbol DRL is shown when the running lights are in use.

They are active when the light switch is off and the ignition is on.

Stability Control Off Indicator Symbols and Tell-tales

Stability Control Off Indicator symbol. This light, or the example below, tell you that

the stability control system is deactivated. You vehicle manufacturer may call this

AdvanceTrac,  Automatic Stability Control (ASC), Dynamic Stability Control (DSC), Dynamic Stability

and Traction Control (DSTC), Electronic Stability Control (ESC), Interactive Vehicle Dynamics (IVD),

Precision Control System (PCS), StabiliTrak, Vehicle Dynamic Control (VDC), Vehicle Dynamics

Control Systems (VDCS), Vehicle Stability Assist (VSA), Vehicle Stability Control (VSC), etc. But the

Page 38: den tin hieu a

light means the same thing. The system is currently off. The vehicle will operate normally — that is,

without the stability control enhancement — with the advanced system off.

Stability control is a sophisticated electronically-controlled system that uses sensors in tandem with

other systems to identify when there is lateral slip in the tires during cornering and responds by

adjusting the brakes, throttle and or suspension to help keep you on track. Thus, the system is

automatically turned off when the Check Engine Light is activated in order to prevent inaccurate

readings sending incorrect instructions to the system.

These text symbols, or one matching one of the other acronyms,

will be seen in some early model vehicles that use the system. Newer vehicles use the picture symbol

above.

For more on the history and workings of stability control systems, click here.

Economy Mode Operation Indicator Symbols and Tell-tales

Economy (ECO) Mode Operation Indicator symbol. Auto makers now incorporate any

number of automated operation adjustments to make a vehicle more green at the touch of a button.

ECO mode may reduce the setting of the air conditioner or the amount of torque delivered to the drive

system. A fuel-use meter may also be visible on the instrument panel of vehicles with an ECO mode

option.

Note that a pictoral ECO symbol also exists, which only shows that a vehicle is being operated

economically, not in a chosen mode. See here.

Economy Operation Indicator Symbol Symbols and Tell-tales

Economy Operation Indicator symbol. With the push to improve fuel mileage, many

vehicles tell you when you are operating your vehicle economically. There may be a gauge of sorts

also shown. Step on the gas to pass another car and the light will go out.

Do not confuse this symbol with other indicators using the abbreviation ECO and coupled with the

word Mode. The use of the word Mode denotes that control of some of the drive systems has been

chosen. See here.

ECT / ETCS / EML Indicators Symbols and Tell-tales

Page 39: den tin hieu a

ECT Power Indicator symbol. ECT stands for either Electronically Controlled Transmission

or Throttle. In the PWR or power mode, your vehicle is either kept it in a lower gear for more powerful

acceleration in difficult terrain or allowed to throttle more powerfully or deliberately.

This is a variant called Electronic Throttle Control System (ETCS). This acronym is likely to

appear with the word Power or Snow. ETCS or ECT are systems activated by a dashboard button or

switch. The amber color is used to denote that the system should be deactivated under normal driving

conditions.

This is a variant with a German acronym. EML stands for Elektronische

Motorleistungsregelung, or Electronic Throttle Control. The light comes on when there is a malfunction

in the system.

Electronic Power Control Indicator Symbol Symbols and Tell-tales

EPC (Electronic Power Control) indicator symbol. This indicator will come on when a

problem is detected in the engine. Further, the vehicle’s throttle may be limited when this light is

illuminated in order to protect the engine. You will have power enough to limp to your dealer for

repairs, which is what you should do.

Page 40: den tin hieu a

If the vehicle is equipped with Electronic Stability Program (ESP), it will be turned off automatically. Its

indicator light will then appear as well, indicating the Off condition. The EPC light needs to be

addressed, after which both lights will go off.

ESP / BAS Trouble Indicator Symbols and Tell-tales

ESP / BAS Trouble Indicator symbol, meaning Electronic Stability Program (ESP) and

Brake Assist System (BAS). These systems work together, and a fault in either or both will cause the

light to come on. If it remains on, see your dealer. The brakes and suspension will operate normally,

without the electronic enhancements until then.

EV Mode Operation Indicator Symbols and Tell-tales

This is the EV (electric vehicle) MODE Indicator symbol. Hybrid vehicle manufacturers

allow drivers to choose to operate the vehicle only with the electric motor powered by the hybrid

battery. This indicator will be lit when this choice has been made.

Electric Vehicle (EV) Operation Indicator Symbols and Tell-tales

This is the Electric Vehicle (EV) Operation Indicator symbol. Most hybrid vehicles give the

driver the option to choose to use only the electric motor, at least in special situations. This symbol will

appear on the instrument panel when a switch — likely showing the same symbol — is activated.

The vehicle will revert to “normal” operation when the gas pedal is depressed, when the speed gets

high enough or when the hybrid battery’s power gets too low.

Height High Indicator Symbols and Tell-tales

Height High Indicator symbol. If your vehicle is equipped with an air suspension system, a

text symbol will likely appear on the instrument panel telling you which mode the suspension is set to.

There will be a control switch on the dashboard or console.

Brake Hold Indicator Symbols Symbols and Tell-tales

Page 41: den tin hieu a

Brake Hold Indicator and the Automatic Hold Indicator symbols. The lights

describe systems that keeps the brakes applied when the vehicle is stopped and other conditions are

met. They indicate that the system is on and functioning properly.

Depending on the vehicle’s manufacturer, when in actual use, the indicator may

show Hold, as shown to the left. The brakes are released when the driver steps on the gas while in a

drive gear.

intelligent Brake Assist (IBA) Off Indicator Symbols and Tell-tales

Intelligent Brake Assist (IBA) Off Indicator symbol. IBA uses lasers to identify approaching

obstacles and applies the brakes accordingly. The light comes on when the IBA switch is turned off. If

the light comes on while the system is on, it is either unavailable temporarily or is malfunctioning.

Check that the laser sensor is clean when it is safe to do so. The vehicle can still be driven if the

system is inoperable, but your dealer will need to service it.

Kinetic Dynamic Suspension System (KDSS) Indicator Symbols and Tell-tales

Kinetic Dynamic Suspension System (KDSS) Indicatorsymbol. If this amber light appears it

is likely that the system has detected a fault that will need to be addressed by your dealer. The vehicle

will operate normally in the interim, without the advanced system.

Lane Departure Warning Indicators Symbols and Tell-tales

Lane Departure Warning Indicator (LDW), Lane Departure Prevention (LDP) or Lane

Keeping Assist (LKA)symbol. Assuming detectable lane markers, this light blinks orange if the vehicle

is traveling close to either the left or the right of the traveling lane. A warning chime may also be heard.

The light is green if the system is simply on. Most manufacturers who offer the system or

systems make use of the larger Information Displays (see here) to indicate the system’s operation, and

others offer a text symbol like the one to the left. If the light remains on in orange without blinking,

there may be a fault in the system. The vehicle is still driveable, but the system will need to be serviced

by your dealer.

Page 42: den tin hieu a

Hybrid and Plug-in Hybrid Battery Warning Symbol Symbols and Tell-tales

These are the Hybrid and Plug-in Hybrid Warning symbols. The first light indicates a

malfunction in a Hybrid vehicle’s main hybrid battery, which must be serviced by your dealer as soon

as possible. It is distinguished from the Charging System Warning symbol with the addition of the

word Main under the image of a typical battery.

This is a High Voltage System Fault Indicator symbol for a Plug-in hybrid. An exclamation

point is shown in a drawing of the system’s battery. Only the vehicle dealer can correct a problem with

this system.

Maintenance Required Indicator Symbols and Tell-tales

Maintenance Required Indicator. In most cases, this symbolis used only as a reminder that

routine maintenance is needed, such as an oil change. If there is additional text shown identifying a

specific vehicle system, contact your dealer.

Night View Indicator Symbol Symbols and Tell-tales

Night View Indicator Symbol. If equiped with a near-infrared floodlight, this light indicates

its bulb is burned out.

Overdrive Off Indicator Symbols and Tell-tales

Overdrive (O/D) Off Indicator symbol. This states simply that the vehicle’s overdrive

capability has been turned off. There is likely an on / off switch on the console.

Overdrive Off Indicator Symbols and Tell-tales

Page 43: den tin hieu a

Overdrive (O/D) Off Indicator symbol. This states simply that the vehicle’s overdrive

capability has been turned off. There is likely an on / off switch on the console.

Pre Collision System Malfunction Indicator Symbols and Tell-tales

PCS stands for Pre Collision or Crash System. If this indicator symbol is shown on your

instrument cluster, it indicates a problem with the system and the vehicle should be taken to your

dealer.

The system, if fitted, uses radar to minimizes the risk of injury if a crash becomes unavoidable.

The vehicle alters its suspension and brake settings and the front seatbelts are tightened.

Traction Control Indicators Symbols and Tell-tales

Traction and Active Traction Control Indicator symbols. These symbols indicate that the

systems has been activated and doing its job to maintain traction in slippery conditions, hence the

green color. Like other text indicators, they intend to inform more directly than diagrams.

Color is important. A yellow indicator, particularly if it is accompanied by the Master

Warning, indicates a problem with the system that your dealer should address. The systems will likely

be turned off as well if the Check Enginelight is on.

These symbols indicate Dynamic Traction Control (DTC) and Traction Control

System(TCS) Warnings, variants in the name. Again, green or amber indicates the system is on and

functioning or that the system has a malfunction, respectively. The TCS light will also be illuminated if

the system is turned off using its control switch.

This light will be active when the traction control system is turned off and is generally

amber, indicating a malfunction in the system. Note that traction control sysems use the verhicles

brakes and throttle in their operations and the malfunctions may be in the antilock brakes or the

engine. The ABSor Check Engine light(s) may be on as well.

These symbols indicate a malfunction in the traction control or a

related Stability Controlsystem. Separate warning lights are generally the rule, but some of the first

Page 44: den tin hieu a

vehicles that employed the systems had their warning lights combined. The vehicle should be taken to

the dealer as soon as possible for repair.

Variable Gear Ratio Steering Indicator Symbol Symbols and Tell-tales

Variable Gear Ratio Steering (VGRS) Indicator symbol. This light indicates a malfunction in

the variable gear ratio steering system. The vehicle must be inspected by your dealer as soon as

possible.

Tow Mode Indicators Symbols and Tell-tales

Tow or Haul Mode Indicator symbols. If your vehicle is equipped with Tow

Mode, one of these lights will be lit when the mode is selected.

Sport and Comfort Suspension Setting Symbols Symbols and Tell-tales

Sport Suspension Setting and Comfort Suspension Settingsymbols. Many high-end

vehicles provide the ability to adjust the shock absorber damping mode. A Sport setting will stiffen the

Page 45: den tin hieu a

ride, while a Comfort setting will soften the ride. If neither is selected, the shock absorber damping will

be ”Normal” and no indicator will be shown.

Note that most vehicle manufacturers require that the vehicle be stopped in order to

change these settings.

Malfunction Indicator Light Symbols and Tell-tales

Malfunction Indicator Light  (MIL) symbol. This light, on steadily or blinking, indicates a fault

in the emission control system. It may also indicate that the gas cap is loose or missing.

If this light is on and the gas cap is installed properly, see your dealer as soon as you can. If it is

blinking, reduce your speed, avoid hard acceleration and deceleration and see your dealer as soon as

possible.

Roll Sensing Curtain Airbags Off Indicator Symbols and Tell-tales

Roll Sensing Curtain Airbags (RSCA) Off indicator symbolshows that this set of airbags

has been disabled, generally by a switch found on the dashboard. These airbags are generally found

on vehicles more prone to rollovers such as sport utility vehicles and deploy when a rollover is

detected instead of an actual collision. For this reason, an off switch is likely added for off road use.

If the switch is in the on position and the RSCA Off indicator is on, take the vehicle too your dealer for

repairs.

Hybrid Ready Indicator Symbols Symbols and Tell-tales

These are both Hybrid Ready Indicatorsymbols. These indicators effectively tell

a driver when a hybrid vehicle can move. This is a replacement of sorts for the sound of a running

gasoline engine. The vehicle’s Ready indicator can be activated when the key fob is present, the

vehicle is in park and the start or power button is pushed when the brake pedal is depressed. Cold

weather may slow the appearance of the Ready indicator.

Rear Differential Temperature Indicator Symbols and Tell-tales

Page 46: den tin hieu a

This is a a Rear Differential Temperature Indicator symbol. If this light is on while the

engine is running, it indicates that the oil in the rear differential is too hot. If you are driving, reduce

your speed and stop at the nearest safe place. Allow the differential to cool down and the light to go

out. The vehicle will then be safe to drive. If the light does not go out, call your dealer or roadside

service for assistance.

ower Mode Indicator Symbols and Tell-tales

The abreviation PWR stands for Power and this is a Power Mode Indicator symbol.

Whether it is from an electronically controlled transmission or throttle (ECT) or in a hybrid vehicle, it

indicates that this mode is active. The option controls the transmission electronically, keeping it in a

lower gear for more powerful acceleration in mountainous terrain. It may also indicate control of the

throttle in order allow more powerful or deliberate acceleration.

There will likely be additional text with the abbreviation PWR. See theAcronyms page if it is not a

whole word.
