Contributions We would love to share your news. You are welcome to send emails and other material to the editor for publication. The closing date for the May issue is 13 April 2011. We will endeavour to publish all material submitted but reserve the right to edit or not publish your contribution. Any material published does not necessarily reflect the opinion of the Danish Club or the Editor.

From the Editor

Natural disasters in both Australia and overseas have dominated the news headlines in the past couple of months. Time seems to stand still every now and then while we try to absorb these events. It makes it even more important to look at the positive sides: volunteers helping flood victims, international communities reaching out with genuine help to New Zealand and Japan and at our local level, the inundation damaged the club severely and a lot of hard work is going into getting it back in working order, but the result will be a fresh new look at the club. We’ll celebrate the new look at our Easter lunch followed by the reception to mark the christening of the royal twins with all donations to be contributed to the Premier’s Disaster Relief Fund in their names. Thanks to all users for their patience and to all volunteers for their invaluable help.

What‟s on at the Danish Club?

Café Danmark 25 March 2011

from 6 pm

Come in and see what’s happened at the club since your last visit and try our tasty ‘smørrebrød’: the menu varies from time to time, but you’ll often find ‘rullepølse’

(spicy rolled pork), smoked salmon, roast beef, pate, roast pork and ‘Esrom’ cheese. And yummy hot dogs. The bar is stocked with fresh supplies of Tuborg and Carlsberg brewed in Denmark as well as your favourite Australian beers. There’s even Tuborg Christmas brew. If you prefer a glass of wine with your food, we have a good variety of whites, reds and sparkling on offer. It’s also an opportunity to buy delicious Danish pastries, ryebread and other specialty breads and organic biscuits direct from Britt’s Danish Delights. Tea is back with

smallgoods and quality meats from Flemming, the Danish butcher at Woolloongabba, as well as her own goodies including remoulade and ‘hønsesalat’. It’s a good idea to order in advance and pick up at the café.

Hævnen v. I en Bedre Verden

af Maria Christoffersen

In a Better World er den engelske titel på den danske film, Hævnen, som vandt både Oscar og Golden Globe for Best Foreign Film. Den danske titel passer bedre. Måske den har fået en blidere titel på engelsk for at markedsføre den bedre i engelsktalende lande,

ligesom Mænd der hader Kvinder blev til The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo.

Heimdal Went to Toowoomba

Saturday 12 March 2011

(photo: Paul Christiansen)

The Brisbane team of helpers and guests were lucky to have a relatively straightforward

drive to Toowoomba (many stopped at the Big Orange for refreshments) and Paul was

waiting for us at the Jazz Club in Water Street (which narrowley survived the floods without

damage) just before 11 am. While the guys organised tables and drinks, the ladies filled

the kitchen with lots of ingredients to make smørrebrød – as usual the results looked

delicious.

It was a great opportunity to say hello to new friends from last year and meet many new

faces. Happy to report that both our own freshly made smørrebrød and Britt and Rene’s

wienerbrød was very popular. Lone had also brought along a variety of pickled herring

(getter harder and harder to buy them in the Brisbane area) and quickly sold out. Plans

to organise a bus from Toowoomba to Newstead for the Easter lunch on 10 April 2011

were discussed and if you’re living in or around Toowoomba and would like to jump on

the bus, give Paul Christiansen a ring on 0432 331 496 or 4633 1287.

A big thank you to Paul and Lorna for their help in organising this event and to the many

helpers in the kitchen who made it all possible.

Project Rebuilding Heimdal

Update

Since my last report, the kitchen has been

tiled and is looking fresh and clean. Tune

Johansen, our carpenter, removed the old timber floor with help from Anders, Carlo,

Rick, Lone and Kurt on Monday 28

February and Friday 11 March the last

board of our great new timber dance floor

was laid. It looks just beautiful.

Monday 14 March our floor sander

commenced and the last coating was

applied Friday 18 March - the result was

stunning.

In the week starting 20 March, Tune

Johansen will complete installation of

doors, architraves, kickboards etc, and we

aim to have the kid’s room back in order by the end of the month.

Painting is also scheduled to be completed

by the end of next week, so you should all

be able to see the results at Café Danmark Friday 25 March. No doubt there will still

be many items to finalise over the coming

months.

Most importantly we get our hall back in working order, so we can host the regular

functions of the Danish, Swiss, Norwegian

and Swedish Clubs, the folk dancers and

the play groups, Folkies Old & New and

also meet our commitments to upcoming hall hire events such as weddings.

The first progress payment from QBE was

received early March and we anticipate

further funding shortly as we require a fair bit of cash to continue with our restoration

schedule and avoid delays.

Søren

The Danish Club in Sydney A general meeting is being held at the end of March to determine the club’s future at their current address. Their property (the Swedes hold 30%) is on a

crown lease with an annual rent of $10,000 and 10 years left. The lease terms prevent the Club from running a commercial business which again makes it difficult for them to make ends meet. Hopefully they’ll find a workable solution.

Dansk legegruppe Hver fredag 9.30-11.30 36 Austin St, Newstead 1. søndag i måneden 10-12

begivenhed har Malerfirmaet Flügger A/S

skabt to nye farver, der er specielt

udviklet til den nye prins og prinsesse.

Farverne hedder indtil dåben blot ’Prins’ og

’Prinsesse’, men vil ligesom børnene blive

døbt dagen efter de officielle navne

afsløres i kirken.

Prinsesse:

Prins:

En diset, maritimfarvet gråblå, der sender

tankerne i retning af havgus, vinterhimmel

og flintesten. Det er en smuk, kølig og

drenget farve, der ligesom Prinsessefarven

passer til enkle, råhvide børnemøbler og

tekstiler

Update from the Committee

The committee meets once a month and at our February meeting we discussed:

Our flood event – and insurance

Soren gave an update on current position: tiling had commenced, new posts were being installed, floor due to be removed on 28 Feb 11 and the schedule for laying the new floor, sanding, varnishing etc. Flemming Brickmann will paint the premises once the floors have been completed and we’re aiming to have the hall in a near state of completion by 10 April. A roof expert has had a look at the roof and in his opinion, the asbestos roof will continue to cause problems in spite of the sealing done in 2009. The colour bond roofing on the kids’ playroom section is severely rusted, the old windows have deteriorated and overall the roofing is not cyclone-proof. Suggest that the club applies to the QLD Gambling Community Benefit Fund for removal of asbestos roof and replace-ment with colourbond. (Quotes have subsequently been obtained indicating a

total cost of $120,000 and the club has applied to two funds for funding assistance). Ceiling tiles in current ceiling will need to be replaced, including the hard ceiling tiles in the kids’ room to improve acoustics (with the timber floor it will become very noisy).

No insurance refunds have yet been

received and to keep the work going, both the club and Søren has outlaid funds totalling $35,000.

Events

The last Sunday in February will be busy

with both a ‘High Tea with Martin Pearson’ event (private function) and a Norwegian Folkloric Concert with performers from Norway (function held by Norwegian Club).

The April Store Kolde Bord will be held on Sunday 10/4 and we have invited the ambassador to participate. We’ll combine it with a reception-style event to celebrate the christening of the royal twins (14 April). Details to be discussed.

The April Cafe Danmark will be on 29 April (22 April is Good Friday), no event scheduled for 2nd Saturday in May and 11/6 will be a Skt Hans event with Saga Vikings at their Petrie village.

Money

Accounts for January 2011 showed a

deficit of approx 8,000 after large payments in the month for insurance and rates and initial inundation expenses.

Membership

7 new members came on board in the last period. Total membership is getting closer to 200 individuals and families which is good news. 11 members still unfinancial.

Committee

Iben Lund is interested in joining the committee and we’ll invite her to our

March committee meeting.

News

- Lise and Peter will be added as

signatories to the bank account

- New furniture options to be

investigated – maybe have large

floor cushions instead of bean bags

in kids’ room

- Lone to get quotes for new taps in

bathrooms

- Hall hire rates will increase from 1

July 2011 to $400 with another
