Demystifying Augmentations & Capstones
Augmentation - Definition
Occurs within the framework of any course in which you are enrolled
Typically expands on a particular course topic or material not covered in the course but related to the course material
Project is NOT part of the typical coursework and supplements knowledge on the subject
Augmentation - Styles
Creative work, exploratory study, experimental investigation, or scholarly research. It may focus on one subject area, be interdisciplinary and/or cross-cultural in scope
Project must demonstrate mastery of the topic and show competency in whatever medium of expression & involve some form of written component
Augmentation - Methodology
Approach professor during first couple weeks of the semester with request to augment the course and with ideas for a project
Submit augmentation proposal form by due date – requires appropriate signatures; includes 150 word abstract describing project including final format; and list of preliminary references
Perform work on project and present findings to professor (typically at least one draft prior to final submission); Don’t wait until completion deadline to seek approval from sponsor!!
Submit augmentation completion form by due date – requires appropriate signatures, 30-50 word abstract, and project
Augmentation – Final Format
Please consult with faculty sponsor
Examples: paper, poster, PowerPoint, or DVD
Creative works and other audio-visual projects require a short reflective paper on the nature of the work and its relevance/importance
References/resources should always be cited!
Presentation to a general audience not required but augmentations are often adapted for presentations at conferences
Augmentation – Honors Credit
No grade assigned to augmentation
Professor does not consider work a part of course grade
Honors credits awarded toward graduation requirements (21 total needed) – exact number of credits awarded depends on credits associated with course (i.e. 4 credit course = 4 credits augmentation)
Augmentation – FAQ
