Demonstration of teaching methods.
i. Teaching method: Grammar-translation Method
The teaching method that I chose to demonstrate which was Grammar-
translation method, uses the aid of the learner’s first language to teach English to
them. The main goal of this method of teaching is to enable students to read and
translate literature written in the target language which in this case, English, and to
further the learners’ general intellectual development. This method was targeted to
Primary Year 2 students whom use the KSSR syllabus in school.
ii. Activities:
Set induction – the teacher tells the students that today they are going to learn
about some words in English and how to construct sentences using them. (note
that the medium of instruction in this class is English followed by Malay
translation)
Activity 1: Name the Pictures
Step 1 – the teacher pastes a set of pictures with words below them on the
whiteboard.
Step 2 – the students were introduced to the names of the objects in the pictures
in English language. They are asked to read along the words with the aid of the
pictures.
Step 3 – students are asked to memorise the words.
Activity 2: Let’s Read Sentences.
Step 1 –students are shown cards with sentences containing words that they
previously learnt in Activity 1.
Step 2 – students are asked to follow the teacher to read the sentences. The
teacher translates the meaning of the sentences.
Step 3 –the teacher point up students name and ask them to read the sentences
and say the meanings.
Peer Feedback
I observed the teaching method used by my friend’s group, Nur Nasyitah Nadia
bt. Rusli and Muhamad Fazly b. Lukman, which is Direct Method. This kind of
pedagogical approach uses the language that is going to be taught to the students as
the medium of instruction. For this purpose, English is used fully in the teaching
process. This method focuses on the process of familiarising the students with the
usage of English and how English structure is.
The activity done during their teaching process was the introduction to the
meaning of new words. Their topic was ‘Hot & Cold’, so the students were asked to
match and classify the synonymous words which fall either under ‘Hot’ category or
‘Cold’. So far, the students take part actively in the class though some can’t match the
words correctly. For this case, the student who was unable to answer correctly was
been corrected by the teacher and the student had no hard feelings about it.
They also focused on the question-answer technique which is one of the core
elements of this method of teaching. Students were asked many questions in
relationship between the topic of the day and the student’s daily life and surroundings.
Students excitedly give feedbacks to the teachers and some students who used their
mother tongue would be corrected by the teachers. This gave the students awareness
of the usage of English in the class.
Overall, the pair manages to bring the interest of the students in learning new
words in English tough the teachers use English fully in the class, which students are
most probably not familiar enough with. The method is most effective if facing with
students who are more exposed to English in their daily life –family, media, etc. Apart
from that, Direct Method teaching approach will have some problems in facing those
students who never been exposed to English at all, as they will lost interest of learning
the language they don’t understand.
