Garth opened his eyes for a few seconds, takingin the scene. All around him, elves were rush-ing frantically, trying to wake him from his co-

ma. He closed his eyes again, allowing the image to sink in-to an abyss of black.

    What happened?Garth wondered.

A dark voice entered his thoughts. You have repaid your debt, the voice said.Who are you?Garth queried.I am Shadow. I sense your desire for revenge, your hatred for the

promise I forced you to keep. If you want your revenge, then take it. Iwill be waiting in the Fortress of Shadows, the voice replied.

    I will have my revenge.

The boy has received the message, Shadow said. He willcome to me and personally deliver what we need to takeEarth and destroy the Warriors. Then we can find what

    they will be looking for.

What exactly is it that they will be looking for? Et-nique asked.

The Warriors will attempt to locate the ancient weap-ons of the elements: The Blade of Pyr, the Daggers of

Aerus, and the Bow of Hydrus. Their amulets will leadthem to these weapons. We must arrive there first. I sensetheir power, even while they are away from Quorantalthi-en.

What must we do? Tranquill asked. Go to Crystal Lake and seize the Crystal Blade. Take it

to the Isles of Dread and place it in the Gates lock. I will

obtain the fourth blade myself soon enough. Now go,Shadow commanded.

    * * * * *

You can destroy Shadow,Garth heard in his thoughts.

For the first time in nearly four months, Garths armmoved. His eyes opened. Slowly, he climbed to his feet.He began to walk over to the chest by the wall. All aroundhim, people he didnt know were trying to restrain him, try-ing to force him to rest. He had done enough resting, he

figured. He continued toward the chest and opened it. Hereached inside and removed a long, silver sword, a skull on

A ripple appeared in the air around the icy-blue homes of

Crystal Lake. Tranquill and Etnique stepped through theportal. Tranquill created a mist that covered the lake.Slowly, their field of vision was reduced to a couple feet.

Trolls began to march through a larger portal onto the mistylakeshore.

Somethings wrong,Seran thought. This mist wasnt here fiveminutes ago and theres no way it would move in that quickly, not nat- urally. The Mages!she realized. Atanorkaritan, she thought,Crystal Lake is under attack. Please hurry.

Fire, lightning, and boulders flew through the mist, catching unsuspecting villagers and destroying homes. Eve-

rything in the elements paths was destroyed. Bones shat-tered as boulders carried elves into the trees and the largeice buildings. Fireballs bombarded the castles thick ice wall, melting it so the kingdom could be easily overtaken.

We must defend the Sword of the Crystal Tides,Seran

thought. A faint green glow filled her scars as she left thequickly melting castle that she had made her home. As eachinch of ice melted from the walls, her rage built up insideher, her scars glowing more intensely to match her buildingemotions.

Hydrus! she cried. The lake rose at her command. Water circled around her

and the elves, circling until it cooled into ice. Seran closed

her eyes and wept. It was too late to save the castle, too lateto stop the trolls and the Mages from obtaining the Swordof the Crystal Tides and seizing the throne in Shadowsname. The ice-shield began to melt away as she sat weepingon the frozen earth, unable to move. The wall that stoodbetween the elves and death was slowly being whittled away, and there was nothing she could do about it. No matterhow hard she tried to reinforce the wall, the trolls wouldjust continue to tear it down. She was defenseless, aban-doned amid her comrades, unable to face the grief that she

would soon have to bear. Her scars began to glow even

more intensely. Her brown eyes burned emerald in theirsockets.

Whats happening?she thought to herself. Its like when I first got my powers. I can feel something running through me, but itcant be my own energy. Im nowhere near powerful enough to create

this kind of power. The shield melted down to water again. The Crown of

Hydrus rose above her graying brown hair. The column of water rose upward to the sky. The mist began to clear, strengthening the pillar. She rose up into the column and itpassed over the lake. Water from the lake rose into the col-umn as well, feeding her power.

A sudden pain rushed through her spine. She looked at

the water with her glowing emerald eyes. An electric cur-rent raced through the circling waves and into her arms. She began to fall and the column collapsed. She collided

with the icy water and the air was forced from her lungs. The pain was unbearable. She couldnt breathe. Her visionfaded as she sank into the icy, black abyss.

Seran! Atanorkaritan called as he emerged from the por-tal. Tears filled his eyes as he watched Seran fall into theabyss.

Not you too,he thought. We already lost Kur, Vorum, andShius. I wont let that happen to you too!

Fire circled Atanorkaritans feet, climbing upward. Two words burst from his mouth as his scars began to glow.

    Pyr, eruptus!

The flames rushed outward, incinerating the troll army. The water began to evaporate. Serans scars began to glowand she rose to the surface of the lake. Cold air began tofill her lungs and blood began to race through her body toher brain. Her eyes opened as she reached the surface and

she gasped for air.Help her, Atanorkaritan told the Water Elves as he fell

    to his knees from exhaustion.

Nows my chance,Etnique thought. A pillar of flames engulfed him and he vanished into the

castle. He entered the throne room and found the chest be-hind the throne. He opened it and removed the CrystalBlade. Another pillar of flames engulfed him and he leftthe castle, returning to Tranquill outside.

Lets go, he said. The two Mages disappeared into the air and the remain-

der of the troll army returned to the trees.

A soft crimson glow shone on Tysons palms and foreheadin the soft morning light.

I cant believe it was real,he thought.Anna, are you still there? he asked. What? Oh, yeah, she replied, still staring at the Mark

of Aerus on her palm. Against her chest, she felt the Pen-dant of Aerus. A soft blue glow filled her dark room.

Weve got to meet somewhere, Anna said. Meet mein the field. Ill call Kelsey; you call Steve and Katrina.

    Okay, Tyson replied, bye.

Anna heard a click and set the phone back on the receiv-er.

Kelsey, try pulling some water from that stream, Anna

said as the five teenagers sat together in the field near Annas home.

Okay. Hydrus, Kelsey said. Water rose from the stream, but fell back within seconds.Just as I thought, Anna said. We still have our pow-

ers, but theyre not nearly as strong as they were in Quor-antalthien.

I wish we knew more about this, Tyson said. The eye of the water dragon began to glow, as did their

pendants and their scars. A flash of light filled the dark corners of Shadows throne room.

The Crystal Blade carried an eerie blue glow in the dim torchlight. We have obtained the key, Etnique said, laying the sword at his

masters feet. You have done well. Now go to the Isles of Dread and place the

key. We are one step closer to the Warriors downfall.

Another flash of light filled the room and the Mages vanished intothe darkness, heading for the Isles of Dread. Etnique removed thenearly transparent sword from his cloak and placed it in the western- most corner of the Gates keyholes.

The image of the Warriors came into focus.Only one sword left, he thought.Theyre opening the Gate, Tyson said. Weve got to

start training. Im sure Shadow will come too.

But we cant just use our powers in public. People willnotice, Anna said.

But if we dont train, people will notice when the Mag-es come and start wreaking havoc, Steve said.

The portal to Shadows castle opened and Garth steppedthrough, followed by an army of Fire Elves led by Alazon-eran. An eerie stillness filled the air. Black shadowsblanketed the mountains surrounding the ancient castle.

The sky was black. Not even a sliver of sunlight penetratedthe seemingly soulless clouds. An army of demons rosefrom the dark soil. The elves were outnumbered.

Garth, go face Shadow. We can hold them off untilyou return, Alazoneran said.

The Fire Elves all drew their swords and ignited the

blades. They formed a circle, facing the army of demonsaround them. Garth ran in through the thick double doors, the ancient hinges creaking. He ran through the empty hallsuntil he found the throne room. He entered the room anddrew his sword from its sheath.

Shadow, I cannot allow you to attack Earth, Garthsaid. I know your plan. You wish to force the Warriors to

surrender. Surely you must know that they will only fight

harder to defend their friends and families. Nave mortal, Shadow replied, you couldnt possibly

know of my true motives. You know nothing of the powerI seek. You will fall where you stand for getting in my way.

Garth lunged at Shadow, the Skull Blade angled fero-ciously at its target. A black glow appeared on Garthspalm. The word forced itself from his mouth.

Vort! Black tendrils bound Shadow where he stood. A black

glow filled Garths eyes. A malevolent grin tugged at hislips as power surged through his body. The sword was get-

ting closer and closer, aimed perfectly for Shadows heart. Yards became feet and feet became inches. Suddenly, darktendrils reached out from the ground and bound Garth

where he stood. The tendrils holding Shadow loosened.Shadow opened his enormous jaw and a sea of flames

erupted forward, consuming the motionless warrior.Fool, I am the master of darkness. I made you believe

that you could defeat me to make my victory that muchsweeter. You have delivered to me exactly what I needed.Etnique, come here, Shadow stated.

Yes, my liege, Etnique replied. Take the Skull Blade to the Gate and open it. Its time I

    returned to Earth.

Etnique vanished in a column of flame and arrived atthe Gate moments later. He drew the Skull Blade from hiscloak and examined the metal. The suns golden light re-flected off of the silver blade as he moved it around in theair. Time seemed to slow down as he lowered the blade tothe earth. The blade made contact with the keyhole and hedrove it further still until it was almost completely sub-merged in the ground. The portal opened violently, throw-ing Etnique back as the doorway to Earth exploded open.

The image of the Warriors home became perfectly clear. Shadow, the Gate has been opened,Etnique thought to his

master.Good, came the response, now send my message of destruction.

But save the Warriors for me.

    * * * * *

Tysons scar felt as if it was about to rip open. The visionreplayed itself in his head a thousand times. Garth was outof his coma. He attacked Shadow, and almost won. Tysonsarmy had been attacked. The Mages had opened the Gate.

    They were coming to Earth.

Tyson hid this information from the others. They didntneed to know about Garth or the Skull Blade being the final
