Suffrage in Britain (1832 Reform Bill)• Fears of French style violence• Once middle class received vote working

class ( Chartist movement 1838-1867) and rural farm workers ( 1884) demands vote

Women’s lives change

• New jobs open opportunities (secretaries, typist, clerks, education, social work and health)

• First Birth control clinic opens in Amsterdam in 1882

• Middle class had more leisure time. Working class working by 9 years.

Victorian Age- Politics• Became Queen at 18

and ruled for 64 years (1837-1901)

• Although influential eventually gave up power of Monarch

Women Suffrage Movement• Chartist Movement did not

include women

• The only country to have women suffrage prior to the 20th century was New Zeland

• 1848 Seneca Falls (Mott and Stanton)

• Peaceful non threating efforts were unsuccessful turned to more militant such as protests, hunger strikes and suicides (Emmeline Pankhurst- Women Social and Political Union)
