First thing first: what is Student

Response System (SRS)?

Technology products designed to support;

• Response

• Communication

• Interaction

In a nutshell:

• Starting point: traditional teaching

• The teacher present a question or problem

• Students discuss it in small groups

• They give their response: vote!

• Histogram display shows the distribution of class

answers

• Closure: thorough explanation after the voting

session

• The lecture proceeds as normal….

Testing in Trondheim

• Fall 2009 – spring 2010:

– eight classes

• one construction engineering class (HiST)

• five preparatory class for engineering (HiST)

• two senior high school classes (Ringve senior high school)

– two courses: physics and mathematics

– number of students: ca 410

– testing length: 19 weeks

– evaluation: 8 surveys and 11 large group interviews

Results from evaluation:

• Students perspective:

– instant and anonymous feedback

– group discussion: peer learning

– increased involvement:

• active participation

• they get to think for them selves

– teachers explanation (after the voting session),

increases their learning outcome

all in all: more active learning!

– preparation (key word):

• develop good conceptual questions

– instant feedback on students learning

– thorough explanation after the voting session:

what is the correct alternative, and why?

what are the incorrect alternatives, and why?

It's fun to be at lectures where SRS is used

Current testing at HiST

• Fall 2010:implementing SRS on a regular basis

– Two preparatory classes for engineering

• courses: physics, mathematics and social science

• number of students: ca 60 per class (120 students)

• two reference classes

• testing length: one year

• our goal: implement SRS as a real part of their

studies

• the students will borrow an iPod through the year

• eight teachers involved
