Ministers Report

Dear Friends,

“Grace and peace to you from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.” (Philippians 1:2)

It is such a joy for me to be writing my second message for the Annual Report. As of today, I

also completed writing my 18 month Supervised Ministry Education report and am gearing up to

write my final report in anticipation of my Conference Assessment Board interviews in February.

I have been with you in ministry for 18 months. In many ways, it feels like having a new baby; I

can’t believe its already been 18 months, but then again, I can’t imagine life without being part

of Delta-Toledo Pastoral Charge. With some seemingly insurmountable odds, we have

continued my internship journey together and all of us have grown, changed and are becoming

the people that God has always intended us to be. We are community. Community that cares

deeply for each other and deeply for the world and I thank God everyday for what we are

becoming.

We are, however, on a journey that is sometimes rocky and difficult to navigate. Our buildings

have had costly but necessary repairs that we have had to scramble to find both the funding and

the willing hands to get the work down. Attendance at Sunday morning worship is down from

last year because many people have struggled with health issues and needing to move to more

accessible homes. There are fewer people to do the work in the same way we always have. But

despite this sometimes-rocky road, we are still on a path of transformation and hope.

We continue to work together and like the church at Phillipi that Paul wrote to so many years

ago, all we can do is hold on to the Good News offered in Jesus. In times of change, that path is

never clear, but together we can do anything, if we focus on who we are and what we are called

to do; We are God’s people, called to further the kingdom of God in our world – proclaiming the

good news of new life in Christ for all.

Today, with this annual report, we look back on a year well travelled, and look forward to a year

of hope in a community called together by Christ Jesus.

Thanks, be to God,

Lynne Gardiner

Student Intern Minister.

Council Chair’s Report

Another year has passed and we have been very fortunate to have our student minister Lynne

Gardiner leading us, who also brought some musical talents with her and with husband Hugh and

daughters Emily and Elizabeth.

We are still in search of a Sunday School teacher (kids waiting to attend) and an organist (a choir

just waiting for accompaniment) but through prayers we know they will come.

I cannot say thanks often enough to our congregation and our community for all their support

this past year. We have a lot of strengths within our church and a few challenges which we are

continually working on.

We have a very active and growing UCW which enables us to support several community

organizations; Monday morning coffee with hostess Barb MacLean; a very supportive church

council; a dedicated choir; an outreach program that matches no other; individuals who are there

at a call to help with our fundraising which keeps us in the black; a hall that is available to

community organization for their use; our behind the scenes “elves” who keep the church in top

shape; our South Crosby Breakfast club volunteers and to all those who volunteered this year on

Council and to all those willing to stay on or come on board for next year’s Council.

Our challenge for 2017 is to bring a friend to church and show them that we offer a warm,

friendly atmosphere with great leadership in both Worship and within our church family.

Trustees Report

A huge thanks to all those who went to work on digging around the church hall rerouting the

pipes from the building to try to stop the flooding that was occurring after rain. With this work

and the cleaning of the main roof eaves trough it appears that the hall has finally been sealed off,

we hope.

There have been some fund-raising efforts to help with funding to repair the main roof; however

touch wood, it seems to have stopped leaking so far so let’s hope it will continue.

The sanctuary around the pulpit chancel had new electrical upgrades done and has helped

tremendously with our speaker system. We now have use of the Pulpit microphone, the stand

microphone and the portable cordless mike. Now everyone can hear what is going on.

Another RBC Five in One GIC came due in May 2016, so $2000 plus $2000 from last year was

reinvested and we gained $185 interest with a total of $10,409.00 in our investments. Each May

$2000 is deposited into the RB general account so we decide whether to reinvest or keep it the

account in case it is needed for building maintenance.

We extend a very special thanks to Gerald & Pat Phillips for collecting $779.97 this year in scrap

metal, spent batteries and copper wire. Since 2011 and approximately 30 bins later a total of

$17,428.35 in cash has been gained for our Capital Projects Fund. This project has not only

helped to raise money but has been very instrumental in cleaning up Delta and area. Thanks also

to Glenview Iron and Metal in Smiths Falls who have donated the bins at no charge just because

over 50 years ago, their parents were married at Delta United. We are truly blessed to have such

faithful friends.

With memorial donations received from the family and friends of Helen Ross, Lorna Pearson,

Kathleen Chant and our UCW we purchased a large 2 door beverage fridge. We are very

thankful for this fridge as it kept all our summer salads and desserts cool over a very hot

summer; a huge asset for all our fund-raising efforts and safe food storage. A plaque was

dedicated in their honour at our September Anniversary Service and is hung up on the wall in the

kitchen. I am sure that these faithful ladies would be pleased with this purchase as they were

some of the best cooks in the area.

Thanks to everyone who cares and works hard for the Delta United Church.

Worship Report

Isaiah 41:10: Do not be afraid - I am with you! I am your God - let nothing terrify you! I will

make you strong and help you; I will protect you and save you.

The year 2016 was one with lots to think about - here you go Chris

We heard of the many remits that will decide how to make the United Church of Canada better

and more streamlined; we heard that we need to look to the future to make changes as not many

people are sitting in the pews on Sunday morning; we heard that this world is changing so fast in

technology and we are concerned about how much more can be done; we heard that the entire

world is in turmoil with hatred against nations, hatred against religions and hatred against each

other; but what we forget to hear is that small voice inside each of us saying Do not be afraid - I

am with you!

A couple of weeks ago, I had the opportunity to travel with Councillor Linda Carr to Toronto to

the ROMA (Rural Ontario Municipal Association) Conference being held at the Sheraton Hotel

on Queen Street in downtown Toronto. We arrived by train on Saturday evening and we didn’t

need to register until Sunday at noon so that left us with Sunday morning to go to church,

something we both do every week.

Linda is Anglican and the year prior she had gone on her own to The Cathedral Church of St.

James on Church Street just around the corner from where she was staying, so she asked if I

would like to join her this year and of course I said yes and I am thankful that I did.

St. James is one of the oldest churches in the city and we sat at the front in the very first pew that

had a plaque stating the “Cawthra Pew purchased by Joseph Cawthra in 1803 in memory of five

generations of the Cawthra family”. Each pew had a door and a latch that closed you in, “the

Steward said it was so we couldn’t get away”.

Of course, I love Heritage Buildings, their architecture, like that plaque tells a story of the past,

the huge pipe organ, the beautiful chancel and the brightly coloured stained glass windows were

healing to my soul. I felt at home even though I told everyone I was United, they warmly

accepted me anyways. I even took communion, watching Linda closely to see what I had to do

as their rituals are different than our denomination and they used real wine.

Over the past while I had been struggling with my own faith as things were happening all around

me that were beyond my control and I was getting discouraged, but after the heartwarming

homily, feeling the pipes vibrating from the bass, the smiles of welcoming from strangers and

then joining them for coffee afterward, I realized that the decisions of our church, our world, our

entire being are not ours…they are Gods. God will take care of me, our church and our world as

only God knows how…

Delta United Church Annual Report 2016

Annual Meeting February 19, 2017 Page 18 of 40

After the service, we had to go outside to another building for the coffee time, and those who

know Linda, knows she isn’t shy, so she invited 3 young people as well as others to sit with us.

As it turns the Youth were refugees who had moved to Toronto just two weeks prior and it was

their first time at that church, in fact at any church in Canada. They were from Zimbabwe and

Uganda, uprooted from a world they had known, leaving family and friends to start a new

beginning in a new and welcoming country. I pray they will survive in this cold weather and that

the people of St. James will continue to welcome them.

This also brought my spirits up. It was as if God had planted these three young refugees, at that

time, in that huge cathedral that takes up almost a city block in downtown Toronto. We didn’t

know their circumstances as to why or how they had ended up in Canada, what they had gone

through to get there, perhaps they were students, I don’t know, but it made me think about how

small our world really is and how we are all going through it together.

Also, this humungous church might have had 60 people at the 9 a.m. service, with another at 11

a.m., and could have easily seated 500 or more so they are also struggling in these times just as

we are. When we were waiting for Uber to show up to take us back to the hotel, I recall standing

outside this huge building looking up at it’s tall spires and I suddenly realized it was very quiet

and peaceful, which was very strange for downtown Toronto. It was very humbling to me to see

that even the larger churches are having the same issues that my little church in Delta is dealing

with. For some reason, it brought me peace and I felt better for having been there.

God is With Us Always no matter what and will guide us through the years ahead. We may not

look or be as we are now but we need to trust that God will guide us and be there and help us to

be what we are meant to be… I recently read on Face Book, sometimes there is some good stuff,

that when your life is in turmoil and things are not going right that means that something good is

on the horizon. For me I guess it was a trip to Toronto – who knew! Amen!

We give thanks for Intern Student Minister Lynne Gardiner and for all she has been doing for us.

At the writing of this report we now know that Lynne will be ordained at the Bay of Qunite

Conference Wall Street United in Brockville at the end of May, which is very fitting as that is

her home church before going into Ministry. We are going through the process to Call her to our

Pastoral Charge and will keep you informed on what we need to do.

We give thanks for Bonnie Bilton who helped us with choir practises prior to her health issues

and we pray she will be well enough to return to our church soon.

Special thanks to the choir... Chris, Louise, Lillian, Jana, Bruce, Bonnie, Millard and Irene who

were always willing to come early on Sunday to practise and put up with me trying to organize

and lead them. Thanks to Hugh, Emily and Elizabeth when they could join us.

Thanks to our organist Jean Yves Dupperon who came out early on Sunday mornings to help us

practise. At our lovely Christmas Eve Service, full of beautiful music we bade Jean farewell

after 10 years, as he was taking on a full-time Choir Director position at Portland United in the

New Year. He is not far away and we may seem him once in while when we visit Toledo.

Delta United Church Annual Report 2016

Annual Meeting February 19, 2017 Page 19 of 40

Thanks to Florence who worked behind the scenes to make sure there were people in place to

greet and take up the offering, set up and put away after communion. Thanks to Barb for making

sure there were flowers in the church for special occasions and that the candles were ready to

light. You may think it isn’t much but it is and we appreciate all you have done to make our

church a quiet, holy place to come and give our thanks to God.

Very special thanks to our own lay people…you are amazing and always willing to take on a

service when needed. Thanks to Rev Bruce our Minister Emeritus, Chris Whitty, Millard

Goodsell and Ron Woods for helping again this year. We are so very fortunate to have people in

our congregation who are willing to lead in Worship and I know the amount of time it takes to

put a service together; but in the end, I believe, it helps us to grow stronger in our faith. Thanks

to all those who are willing to read Scripture and Minute for Mission each Sunday.

Thanks to Pat Greenhorn for her work with the Sunday school children. They were always

excited to see what had been planned for them each week. Now that Pat has resigned from the

position she is truly missed but we pray that someone else might come along to help.

We hesitated about getting an artificial tree for the church, but we found a 9’ tree on sale at

Michaels and I believe it was a beautiful addition to the white lights that circle the sanctuary and

it was a lot easier to put up. Thanks to Gerald Phillips for donating a tree from his property for

many years and to all those who make sure it is up and decorated. The Memorial Tree is a

beautiful contrast with its white branches and coloured lights in remembrance of loved ones we

hold dear in our hearts as is Lillian’s hand crocheted village and ceramic white tree. If you wish

to add a star in memory of a loved one, please see Pat or Cathy.

Delta United has always been a place where we can feel welcome and even though

circumstances change we continue to move forward. It is a place where we can weep, we can

laugh and we can be discouraged over things that are out of our control and yet we are still

accepted and loved; perhaps more so.

I read somewhere that one of the best gifts you can give someone is the gift of thanking them for

being part of your life and for that I truly give thanks for each one of you and I am thankful to be

part of the Delta United Church family.

Christian Education Report

Our Sunday School curriculum for the past year has been: “SPARK Activate Faith”. The

program followed the church calendar, with Old Testament lessons in the fall and New

Testament stories in the winter and spring. As we learned and experienced the stories, we learned

of God’s love and care for us, His gift of Jesus, and His call to service.

On Sunday, May 8th, we launched a fundraising project in partnership with ‘Arms of Jesus

Children’s Mission’, who opened and dedicated a new high school in Guatemala that same day.

We called our project the “Wheelie Big Deal”, and challenged the congregation to raise funds for

bicycles for children who would have to walk up to two hours to get to the new school. Each

bicycle cost $170 and we were hoping to purchase two bikes. Through the incredible generosity

of our congregation, and money donated at the Fiddlers Service, DUC raised over $1,900 –

enough for 11 bikes! In addition, our sister congregation at St. Andrew’s donated $680, enough

for an additional 4 bikes! (This total included funds from the Masons, and the cyclists on tour

from Ottawa who had lunch provided by the St. Andrew’s congregation on June 11th and 12th.)

A special thank you to Emily Gardiner for her enthusiasm and commitment in sharing leadership

in Sunday School.

For the past five years, it has been my privilege and joy to lead Children’s Ministry at Delta

United. I thank you for your support and generosity, and for entrusting me with the incredible

responsibility of passing on the stories and foundations of faith to the next generation. I pray that

our children may always love God with all their hearts, give thanks in all circumstances, and

reach out in love and service to their neighbours, both here and far away.

Yours in Christ

Delta United Outreach

As a small rural church, we are “the little church that can” make a difference in the lives of

others locally and in the greater world.

The church raised $4000.00 and the UCW gave $500.00 to the Mission & Service Fund of the

United Church of Canada.

Another great Lenten project led by Pat Greenhorn and the Sunday school partnering with ‘The

Arms of Jesus Mission’ was the “Wheelie Big Deal” project. We were challenged to raise $340

dollars to purchase 2 bicycles; however, we raised over $1,900 – enough for 11 bikes! In

addition, St. Andrew’s donated $680, enough for an additional 4 bikes! What a great outreach

project helping others in need in the world! Thanks Pat.

Our hall continues to be the home of the Beverley Seniors who meet monthly, the Delta

Community Food Bank which actively helps many families in the community and the Good Food

Box program for the community to pick up pre-ordered fruit and vegetables.

Our Prayer Shawl Ministry continues to be well received by all those who have been given

shawls as well as those who are creating them.

The Kid’s Club continues to attract over 15 children from the community who gathered every

other Monday to do a craft, play a game and have a snack.

The Rideau Islands and Lakes Theatre group met once again on Thursday evenings. Rachel

Marks is always willing to help in the community whenever an event requires a talented group of

actors/actresses and in turn her students help serve at our annual Turkey Supper.

In October, our church partnered with the Delta Mill Society by hosting a Ham Supper at the

church hall as part of the 2nd annual Harvest Festival.

In November & December we took part once again in the 12th annual Celebrating the Season

partnering with Lower Beverley Lake Park to serve meals during the five Saturday nights.

We also have a dedicated crew who every Thursday morning serves breakfast to students as part

of the Breakfast Program at South Crosby Public School.

Branch 207 of the Royal Canadian Legion and Ladies Auxiliary use our church hall during the

winter months for meetings and other events as well as the Delta Agricultural Society during the

winter months.

May we continue to be a caring and giving church, doing God’s work by loving our neighbours,

by opening the doors of this church, by going beyond our walls to serve and give to those in need

and may we continue to reach out and make our church a place where all can feel welcome!

2016 saw some electrical work completed which improved our PA system, outside light and

some improvement to our Jesus light. We also had our well blown out and a Big O installed

and eaves troughs cleaned which has helped to stop the flooding of our kitchen and hall.

Once again thank you for your continued support in maintaining YOUR church. A very big

thank you to our summer family and community volunteers for their support and to Mac and

Thank you to everyone who provided worship, programme, and lunch for our meetings. A

special thank you to Edith Woods and Effie Warren for looking after the sending of meaningful

cards and for the Bake-less Bake Sale, to Lillian Willison and others whose busy hands make

prayer shawls and to Cathy Livingston, President, Pat Phillips, Secretary and Barb Bentley,

Treasurer for keeping us well organized and busy.

The volunteer time of many members helps the Monday morning coffee time (Barb MacLean)

the South Crosby School Breakfast Thursdays (Sheila Riskie). As well there are many fund-

raising events such as catering throughout the year, the Bake Sale at the Maple Syrup Festival,

sales of the Maple Cookbook, a raffle for a throw and 2 pillows, and the Bake-less Bake Sale.

We hosted the funeral luncheon for the family & friends of Chris Menzies and Henry Bond and

helped with catering to the funeral luncheon for Betty Ostrom.

From these activities donations are made to the Delta Church, UC Mission and Service and to

others in the community.

Our UCW Purpose states “To unite women of the congregation for the total mission of the

church and to provide a medium through which we may express our loyalty and devotion to

Jesus Christ in Christian witness, study, fellowship and service.”

Well done ladies and thanks for all your support. This has been a very fulfilling year!

Annual Meeting February 19, 2017 Page 30 of 40

Notes from President Cathy

I would like to take a moment to honour one of our long time UCW and Church Ladies - Edith

Woods. For health reasons, understandable at the age of 89, our Edith relocated from Delta,

where she lived her entire life, to the Carveth Care Home in Gananoque. A good move for Edith

as she is enjoying herself talking to people, helping them out and doing puzzles together. She

was pleased to have her neighbour Eileen Halliday join her last fall, just a few rooms away.

I remember when I was a newbie with the UCW and Edith tried to explain to me when I became

President that I needed to do a program. I had no idea what she was talking about – President

and Program what did I get myself into…but as it turned out it was a list of all the meetings and

what we were going to do at each one. So, okay that was easy enough but it still wasn’t what

they were used to but eventually she gave in or perhaps she gave up and learned to use what I

had created.

I want to thank Edith for all her contributions not only to the UCW but to the Church as well.

Edith had attended Delta United ever since she was a child and has seen many changes over the

years. She helped teach Sunday School, organized the annual church suppers, helped with

funeral luncheons, helped with Cheer for the UCW by sending out cards and gifts to those who

needed a bit of sunshine in their life. You could always depend on Edith being early to church on

Sunday mornings to see if there were anything she could do to help.

Edith was instrumental in helping gather up information for the 50th Anniversary of the UCW

with pictures and memorabilia, as an original member of the WA before it changed over to the

UCW she is one of the few Chartered Members remaining.

Even though Edith is further away, Delta is always in her thoughts. Our UCW held their March

meeting at Carveth and celebrated her birthday, with Glen Chant present, and we plan on doing

the same for her 90th birthday this March.

Thanks Edith for all your help, cares and concerns for each one in our church and community.

You can truly say that you lived a life with God as your guide,

I am very proud of what this small group of women have accomplished over the years and

especially this year. This year with fund raising efforts along with memorial donations we raised

over $5000.00 giving $3010 to others. We transferred $400 to the church to help with septic

pump outs, donated $500 to Mission and Service, donated $250 to the Laming Family plus to

other local non-profit groups in need. Thanks to everyone for their continued support.

All women are welcome to join us so if you want more information please speak with myself or

Pat Phillips. Our meetings are normally the 3rd Wednesday of the month at 11 a.m. but can be

subject to change depending on schedules. We do have a good time when we all come together!

aggressive to try to earn a higher interest rate. The $8000.00 investment is like all the rest

with a gradual increase in intererst each of the 5 years with option to pull our once a year.
