It’s a unique ecosystemthat requires much workand study to ensure itspreservation.
Burns Bog water leveland chemistry monitoringwill continue this year tohelp develop a water bal-ance model to show howmuch is entering thoughrainfall and howmuch isleaving through drainage.
Delta engineeringdirector Steven Lan saidan accurate water bal-ance model is needed toimprove the municipality’sunderstanding of bog con-ditions and guide hydrol-ogy management for thefuture.
“We want to achievea greater understand-ing of what happens inthis of bog environment. The number of projectsbeing done at a universitylevel in terms of researchprojects outlines the factthere’s still a great deal wecan learn about the bogand how important it isin its role in the environ-ment,” said Lan.
A raised bog that’sa wetland above theregional water table, BurnsBog’s only source of watershould be precipitation, but the concern has beenit could dry out.
In 2004, four partners— federal, provincial, regional and municipal
governments — jointlypurchased 2,042 hectares(5,045 acres) of Burns Bogto be protected as an eco-logical conservancy area.
Delta assumed respon-sibility for managing itshydrology and over theyears has undertakena number of projects, including internal ditchdams to ensure the envi-ronmentally sensitive wet-land doesn’t dry up.
So far, almost 240 damshave been installed and10 to 20 more will be builtthis year.
Meanwhile, a numberof studies, including thoseat the university level, have taken and more areplanned for 2016.
In a presentation toDelta council earlier thisyear, urban environmen-tal designer Sarah Howienoted, theoretically, water
could be captured fromditches and pumped backinto the bog, however, lastsummer was a dry one andthe ditches had very littlewater flow.
Last fall, Delta staff co-presented a paper at theCanadian Water ResourcesAssociation B.C. confer-ence in Richmond, whichexamined how Burns Bogmay be affected by cli-mate change. The paper
also discussed how Deltais working to protect thebog from climate changeby blocking ditches andmanaging water levels atits perimeter.
According to Delta, thepriority is ecological pro-tection, not public use.Bog vegetation is highlysensitive to trampling, andpeat fires can easily sparkand burn underground forweeks.

Delta council this weekapproved two new bylawsin an effort to stimulategrowth and investment inthe community.
Civic politiciansMonday night approvedtwo revitalization taxexemption programbylaws — one aimed atindustrial developmentand tourism, and the otherto encourage investmentin the retail and commer-cial centres in South Delta.
The industrial develop-ment and tourism pro-gram strives to promotehigher-end industrialdevelopment by offering
incentives for propos-als in excess of $10 mil-lion, encourage rezoningof land to higher valueindustrial uses, protectthe Burns Bog EcologicalConservancy Area fromdevelopment on adjacentproperty, and encouragediversification and expan-sion of tourism accommo-dation and facilities.
The South Delta revi-talization tax exemptionprogram bylaw aims toencourage investment innew and existing retail, commercial and mixed-use projects to create astrong local economy andexpand local employmentopportunities, invest-ment to enhance the
town centres of Ladnerand Tsawwassen, and topreserve and enhanceexisting heritage buildingsand developments thatleverage the heritage feelof Ladner Village.
This bylaw is a directresult of the South DeltaBusiness SustainabilityStrategy, said Sean McGill,Delta’s director of humanresources and corporateplanning.
The strategy was puttogether following exten-sive research by a con-sultant, which includedconsultation with Delta’sbusiness groups. The strat-egy is aimed at helpingthe business communi-ties in South Delta adjust
to life with the massiveTsawwassen Mills andTsawwassen Commonsshopping centres set toopen later this year at theTsawwassen First Nation.
Coun. Sylvia Bishopsaid she was happy to seethe incentives extendedto include proposals thatmaintain and enhanceheritage buildings.
The municipalityalready has four similarexisting bylaws, includingone offering incentivesfor developments alongLadner’s waterfront.
When questioned byCoun. Ian Paton, McGillsaid the lack of develop-ment along Ladner’swaterfront to date, despite
efforts by the municipal-ity, can be blamed on theprovincial government’spolicy of only signing two-year water lot leases.
“It’s 100 per cent of thereason why we’re not mov-ing forward right now,”McGill said, adding thatstaff are in contact withprovincial staff on a weeklybasis and are pushing for30-plus year leases.
Both bylaws come withtax exemptions and feereductions if proposals fallwithin a certain criteria.Qualifying developmentscould be eligible to haveproperty taxes frozen forup to three to five years,as well as a 60 per centreduction in civic fees.

Getting caught reach-ing for that cell phone willsoon cost B.C. drivers evenmore.
The government thisweek announced higherfines and more penaltypoints in an effort to elimi-nate distracted driving,a leading factor in manydeaths on B.C. roads.
The new fines, whichstart June 1, begin at $368for a first offence, which isup $200 from the currentfine of $167. The fines fora first-time offence alsoinclude a $175 ICBC driverpenalty point premium fora total of $543 in financialpenalties for a first-timeoffender.
Fines will increase forrepeat offenders. A secondoffence within 12 monthswill net a total of $888 infines — the $368 base fineplus a $520 penalty pointpremium.
The government hasalso raised distracted driv-ing to the threshold forhigh-risk driving offences,
putting it on the samelevel as excessive speedingand driving without duecare and attention.
Repeat offenders willhave their driving recordautomatically reviewed, which could result ina driving prohibitionranging from three to12 months, and repeatoffences could mean long-er prohibitions.
Drivers in theGraduated LicensingProgram face interventionafter a first offence and apossible driving prohibi-tion of up to six months.
Delta Police Chief NeilDubord, who is also chairof the B.C. Associationof Chiefs of Police trafficsafety committee, said thisis one of two priorities thecommittee is working onwith the province.
“I definitely think it willhelp,” he said of the new, higher fines, adding thatit seems like a large num-ber of drivers still aren’tgetting the message thatdistracted driving is dan-gerous.
“It still is the number
two killer, reasons fordeaths, on our roads.”
“Distracted driving, like drinking and driving,is entirely avoidable, yettoo often has devastat-ing consequences,” MikeMorris, B.C.’s Minister ofPublic Safety and SolicitorGeneral, said this week.“Since 2010, when weintroduced tough, imme-diate sanctions for drink-ing and driving, we’veseen a dramatic decreasein alcohol-related trafficfatalities.”
The latest statistics, from 2014, show 66 deathsand 630 serious injuries incrashes where distractedand inattentive drivingwas a contributing factor.
Over the past threeyears, approximately50,000 distracted drivingtickets have been issuedannually. Here in Delta, officers have issued a totalof 3,610 distracted drivingtickets since the law wasestablished in 2011.
So far in 2016, officershave already issued 249tickets to distracted driv-ers.

The real estate market is onsteroids and Delta’s planningefforts need to catch up.
Rarely can a day or two goby without hearing, “Did you
see what they’re asking for that place?”or “Did you hear howmuch they gotfor that one?” Today’s sky high pricesare making a lot of homeowners a lotof money while rapidly increasing thenumber of people that are being pricedout of the market.
What it’s also doing is putting pres-sure on the plans local government hasdrawn up over the years, documentsthat have utilized the collective wisdomof the public to determine how ourcommunities should evolve. There willalways be pressure from developersto push the envelope when it comesto these plans, but as the demand forland escalates, so too does the desireto maximize its value, which is creatingunprecedented stress on the system.
Check out the real estate ads thesedays and you’ll see countless exam-ples, somemore overt than others, ofthe potential opportunities to reshapeneighbourhoods that were largelydeveloped a half-century ago. Whetherit’s replacing one house with two orthree or turning a strip of older, strate-gically placed homes into townhouses,or even condos, there are all kinds ofpossibilities out there.
There’s no doubt this type of rede-velopment was going to take place overtime, but with a trickle-down effectfrom the big city accelerating prices atan absurd pace, it’s happening, or atleast trying to happen, right now.
Do we want townhouses or condoswhere single-family homes now stand?Do we desire lots so narrow you havestep outside to stretch your arms? Willwe accept greater density if it helpskeep prices down? There are all sortsof questions that need answers in thissupercharged market, and not juston an ad hoc basis when a developercomes forward with a specific proposal.
Rising prices will continue to placedemands on our neighbourhoods sowe’ve got to be ready to meet themhead on. I can’t blame homeownersfor trying to cash in, but when theyattempt to do so we’ve got to make sureit’s done in an orderly fashion.
Good planning has created a mostenviable place to live, but that canchange in the blink of an eye if we’renot prepared for what’s coming ourway.
Playingcatchup
Next Friday is FoodRevolution Day.The Jamie OliverFoundation cameup with the idea a
few years ago and its main goalis to have children from all overthe world partake in meals thathave been designed around chefOliver’s nutritional recipes.
The foundation has long ten-tacles around the globe and hascorporate support frommanylarge multi-nationals. A resonat-ing theme within the founda-tion is to reduce the amount ofexposure to sugar in a typicalwestern child’s diet and to reducethe alarming and growing rate ofchildhood obesity.
Recently, and after much lob-bying, the foundation achieveda milestone in British parlia-ment. In 2018 a “sugary tax bill”will be introduced in the UnitedKingdom. The tax is expectedto raise close to a billion dollarswhich would go back in to theschool system to promote nutri-tional health and education aboutfood and cooking within theschool environment.
The idea of a sugar tax hasbeen bandied about in variousNorth American jurisdictions forquite a while and it is time thatgovernments sharpened theirpencils and took a look at how thebenefits of such a tax could takepressure off our medical system.
Dietary life lessons are bestlearned at home, but increasingly, the school environment is playing
a key role in providing access toknowledge about food and goodeating habits.
In the United States and inGreat Britain, school cafeteriasare common place and have beenthe distribution point for manynational nutritional health plans.More often than not though, many inner city schools that havegood intentions in these settings, lose out on the home front whengood eating strategies bow tosocio-economic realities. This iswhere the price/quantity boon-doggle raises its ugly head. Leftwith little choice, some familieshave to resort to the couple oflitres of $1 pop and some $5 dol-lar frozen pizza for the dinnertable.
This path to poor food choiceis not just price driven. Workingparents are taxed for time andenergy and sometimes con-venience trumps common sense.Imagine how these circumstances
subliminally impact our kidsand imagine how they will affectchoices for their families in thefuture. To break away from thisunfortunate cycle, parents, edu-cators, school districts and gov-ernments have to do a better jobof promoting nutritional healthframeworks to steer children inthe right direction.
In the grand scheme of things,we are lucky here in Delta in thatour school district is supportingprograms related to nutritionalhealth.
By next week, and to celebrateFood Revolution Day, hundredsof local young farmers will haveplanted over 1,000 cucumberseeds. Meanwhile, they have beensnacking on salads with veggiesthey have grown, are growing, and will be growing over the com-ing weeks. We have been callingthese sessions tailgate parties asthe salads are dished out from theback of my truck. A recent sessionat a local school was both delight-ful and disturbing.
A couple dozen kids chowedtheir fruits and veggies but therewere several of them who clearlyneeded food. They were hungry.I’m talking real hunger. If youhave school aged children, let’smake an effort to appreciate whatthey need next week and always.Mike Schneider is founder of
Project Pickle and likes to writeabout growing, cooking and eat-ing food. He was named as aJamie Oliver Food Revolutionambassador.

Editor:Port Metro Vancouver
has a fiduciary respon-sibility to use their portland efficiently but whenit comes to sharing thewealth they do not seem tobe interested.
On any day you cansee containers stacked tothe sky on port propertiesand if just a small por-tion of those containerswhere moved by train toan inland terminal likethe Ashcroft terminal wewould have less incentiveto destroy farm land.
PMV bought theGilmore farms inRichmond as a study area
because it was next doorto industrial land.
In my opinion, the rich-est farm land in Canadacannot become ware-houses.
The Ashcroft terminalis 340 kilometres awayand they have both theCN and CP lines runningthough their 320 acres. Ifcontainers where removeddirectly from the ships totrains, there would be lesstrucks on the road, lesspollution and less motiva-tion for speculators to buyfarm land.
The inland shippingoption works becausethe rail lines have direct
links to the East Coast,America and the Gulf ofMexico. Would we needthe $3.5 billion megaMassey bridge if 10 percent of trucks were off theroad and rail cars whereused instead?
Ports all over the worldhave options to use inlandshipping and many aretaking advantage of usingthose facilities for sortingand moving containers.
The creator of FedExcame up with the idea, touse a central location fordistribution of goods andyears later it has proven tobe a successful businessmodel.
The more we learnabout the options availa-ble to move our goods andkeep Canada economicallyhealthy the more we real-ize that getting creative, sharing the business andworking to create partner-ships will be the future.
I just wish Port MetroVancouver spent lesstime trying to re-brandthemselves and insteadimplemented real changewith modern solutionsfor a more positive futurethat put as much impor-tant on being able to feedourselves as the all mightydollar.

nations, letter to the editor,May 4
When on November22, 2006 the House ofCommons overwhelm-ingly passed a motionrecognizing Québécois asa nation, Canada officiallysanctioned ethnicity as adefining element of whatconstitutes a nation.
Within a self-imposedcountry-wide setting ofbilingualism and legislated
multi-culturalism, we areconfronted with the chal-lenges of meeting growingand increasingly militantdemands for special“national” status from 625aboriginal First Nationscommunities.
Indeed, we have con-demned ourselves to for-ever grappling with whathas become Canada’soverriding political syn-drome of howmanyseparate “nations” wecan accommodate in our
very ownmatryoshka dolland still remain a distinctnation.
Howmany nations arethere in Canada’s matry-oshka doll?
While the concept of“civic nationalism” isbased on the notion of“One Nation – Indivisible,”in which the state derivesits political legitimacyfrom the active participa-tion of all its citizenry,Canada’s “ethnic national-ism” has fragmented the
country and its peoplealong hereditary and mul-ticultural lines on the roadto ever less than the sumof its painfully dividedparts.
We keep talking aboutnational unity and nation-al reconciliation andCanadian values while, inreality, legitimizing evermore “national” solitudes.
Howmany more arethere in Canada’s matrys-oshka doll?

eal estate speculators and foreign buyers are pricing farm-land in Delta and elsewhere in the Lower Mainland out ofreach, says a Ladner woman who warns it spells bad newsfor the future of farming.Jennifer Grenz used to farm on a rented plot in Richmond
and wants to get back into the business in her new hometown. Shehas written to Delta council and others hoping for action when it comesto buyers purchasing farmland as an investment to flip or hoping forchanges in the agricultural zoning. An agrologist, Grenz is concerned land that’s not being farmed willcontinue to escalate in value, something the Agricultural Land Reserve(ALR) was originally intended to prevent. Grenz said she has seen, aswell as been told by farmers and local realtors, that foreign buyers, including Chinese buyers in real estate tour buses, are eyeing primeagricultural land with no intention to farm. The B.C. Agriculture Council has no official position on foreign owner-ship of farmland, but Grenz believes it needs to be examined as well aswhat’s required to uphold the original purpose of the ALR.“The ALR was designed to protect farmland and one of those protec-tions was to keep the price reasonable, but in this new market I don’tthink the ALR is protecting us from that problem anymore,” she said. “Ithink the government needs to look at what it can do with that designa-tion to adapt to the current market.“In the current market, you have people looking to invest large sumsof money on behalf of investors or a single investor who is not engagedin agriculture, but they’re looking safe, long-term investment. So if youhave a $5 million property and want to store your money safely, you cando that. Further to that, you’re eroding the value of that agriculturallyzoned land because if it doesn’t get farmed for 10 or 15 years, if theywant to rezone it because they can say it’s not useful.”Unlike some provinces that have restrictions, B.C. has no limits on for-eign ownership of farmland, including land in the protected ALR. Usesof those lands are regulated by the Agricultural Land Commission. When it comes to speculators owning farmland in Delta, it’s a concernthat dates back many years. In 1969, for example, Murray Davie, chairof the Delta Chamber of Commerce’s agriculture committee, compileda report suggesting the formation of a regional farm district four yearsbefore the NDP government introduced the Agricultural Land Reserve.
His report pointed out that over 2,000 acres involving 20 farms in Deltawere owned by “foreign” syndicates, while over 1,300 acres were eitherheld for speculation by B.C. investors or metropolitan developers seek-ing subdivision approvals.“It’s safe to assume that the future potential of agriculture in Delta is injeopardy,” Davie was quoted as saying in 1969.When the ALR was introduced in 1973, New Democrat MLA Carl Lidenexplained it was necessary because speculators owned most of thefarmland in Delta. He said the government was helping the farmerwith the legislation because “this bill will keep farmland prices down towhere farmers can afford to buy farmland for farming. It will stop farm-ers from leaving their lands.”Fast-forward to 2013 and a Metro Vancouver survey found 28 per centof farmland in Richmond, Delta, Langley, Surrey and Barnston Islandwas identified as not being in agriculture production, even though ithad the potential for farming. The survey also concluded the situationwill not change “without some significant intervention.”At the time, long-time Richmond farmer and city councillor HaroldSteves, one of the architects of the ALR, warned how some investorsare allowing their land to get overgrown and fallow so they can claimtheir properties are no longer suitable for agriculture.

Jennifer Grenz, who would liketo get backinto farming, isfrustrated byrapidly rising landprices she saysare a result ofspeculators
ReaFarmlandprices Farmscan be seen byspeculators as asafe, long-terminvestment.
Delta CAO George Harvie that year noted most of the properties heinvestigated were foreign owned in what appeared to be a form of land-banking.The Corporation of Delta looked into how many local farms were al-lowed to go fallow either because of foreign ownership or inactive farm-ing, but Delta farmers said the issue appeared overblown.According to Delta’s latest Agricultural Profile, the municipality’s agri-cultural sector is unique. Its commercial farms are among the largest insize in the Lower Mainland and make use of a high level of land leasingin their operations. Several factors are conspiring to challenge the sec-tor, however, including “a growing population is competing with farmersfor farmland for rural-residential purposes, creating non-agriculturalcompetition for farmland in its wake.”The Corporation of Delta has taken measures as a local government toprotect farmland, including maintaining its policy to generally not per-mit lot splitting because smaller parcels are viewed as less viable. A fewyears ago Delta also took the lead to prevent buyers from purchasingfarmland as a cheap place to build mansions, limiting house sizes anddefining a farm “home plate” on agricultural properties. The municipality also has new soil bylaws aimed at preventing farmproperties from being used as dump sites for construction and otherwaste. However, those measure don’t mean those lands can’t be purchasedfor speculation, something that can be seen with the much talkedabout options made for hundreds of acres of prime South Delta farm-land by an industrial real estate developer. Those lands would haveto go through what certainly would be a contentious application to bepulled out of the ALR, though.Responding to Grenz’s letter to council, Coun. Ian Paton, a Ladnerfarmer himself, said Delta has done all it can, and continues to do whatit’s able to do, to keep farmland farmed. He said speculators are nothing new when it comes to farmland here.“She (Grenz) is frustrated with the fact she’s unable to afford somefarmland to do a bit of farming in Delta, but I can tell you that justabout every farmer in Delta would also like to be able to purchase farm-land to expand their farming operations,” Paton said.“She has suggested mayor and council has done nothing to alleviatethe fact that farmland in Delta is going up in value, but I really don’tknow what a mayor and municipal council can do about the price offarmland… when I was a kid growing up in East Delta, there’s beenland speculated upon, ever since the early 1960s,” he said.“On 88th Street in Delta, we had at least two pieces of property, bigfarms that we always wondered who owned. Some of the old-timers willremember a fellow named David Burr, who was a property managerand he went around and managed properties throughout Delta thatwere owned by foreign owners who lived in different parts of the world. When they finally realized that the Agriculture Land Reserve came intobeing, they basically had no choice and sold those farms to Delta farm-ers and they are owned now fee simple.”Paton noted the ALR is still considered sacred and that Delta leads allmunicipalities in actively farming those lands as well as rank-ing highest in leased lands.“I can say, from my experience in Delta, any land that maybe owned by a foreign owner or speculator, a hundred percent of that land is actively leased out to farmers who wantthat land. So I don’t see any land that is being purchasedby speculators and sitting idle.”Grenz said she’s disappointed with his response, notingit’s an issue that should have at least gone to the civicagriculture advisory committee for discussion. She saidthere are many things Delta can try as a local govern-ment.“He says 81 per cent of ALR land in Delta is farmedand that’s fabulous. This is not a criticism of Delta butthis is a warning if you want to maintain those fabu-lous statistics that differentiate us from Richmond, forexample, we need to make sure we’re not putting ourheads in the sand,” she said.Grenz said she looked at one Arthur Drive non-agri-cultural property for potential high-intensity farmingand was surprised to see its price shoot up over$700,000 in a short time. She said she was also looking at land thatshe was told was hopefully going tobe rezoned into industrial forthe future.“How can youcom-
pete with that?” she asked.“I was also told that real estate prices are going up, but agriculturalland was never meant to be keeping up with the residential market andthe increases are almost the same.”Melanie Tennant, director of research for the Real Estate InvestmentNetwork, said an increasing trend is people selling their pricey homesin Metro Vancouver and buying small hobby farms, generally under 10acres, further out, although that’s not the case here. Not everyone isselling and moving to grow carrots, but there is a widening gap of whatsomeone can get outside of Vancouver versus Metro Vancouver, shesaid.
As far as Ladner and Tsawwassen, because it’s part of Metro Vancou-ver, the land and house values are still extremely high comparatively,so there is not a lot of spread in selling in Vancouver and buying inLadner.“People are moving rurally and outside of the Metro Vancouver bound-aries - think Chilliwack, the islands, north and northeast B.C. Addition-ally, people are not generally buying large operational farms like we seein Ladner; but rather small hobby farms with plans for some chickens,a cow and veggies,” Tennant explained.“Some are even just purchasing larger estate-type properties with nointention of pursuing any type of agriculture. They are purchasing moresquare footage and more land for half the price or less than their MetroVan homes.”The expansion of the Port Mann Bridge and Highway 1 has played amajor role in increasing demand for farm properties out in the Langleyand Abbotsford region and Ladner and Tsawwassen will receive thatincrease in demand after the bridge to replace the George Massey Tun-nel is completed, she added.

The ALR was designed to protect farmland andone of those protections was to keep the pricereasonable, but in this new market I don’t think theALR is protecting us from that problem anymore.– Jennifer Grenz I Agrologist

LifestylesSabotaging fitness, and theconsequences
There are a few thingsthat can frustrate me.Slow internet speed, noaccess to WiFi, sale itemsat grocery stores that aresold out, traffic, weeds (Ihate gardening), and evenFacebook frustrates mewhen they change theiralgorithms— yet again!
As I have gotten oldertechnology, and such, isfrustrating me at fasterpace than it used.
People, however, aren’t.With age I am finding
I actually have greaterpatience with clients andindividuals than I ever
have had before. That isuntil they do this:
They head out of townfor a vacation, or a busi-ness trip, or because offamily matters, and theyleave their home and theirrunners behind.
They decide thatbecause they are “away”they don’t need to main-tain their fitness andhealth program.
I’m not quite sure whythey do this. I have heard avariety of excuses, though.
For instance: I didn’thave time, there wasn’ta gym, or my personalfavourite, I never workoutwhen I’m away.
It baffles me that peo-ple would consciouslyand purposely lose thestrength, flexibility andaerobic capacity that theyhave just spent the lastnine to 10 months work-ing so hard to get. Becauseyou will lose it. Youraerobic fitness will startto diminish in as little asseven to 14 days.
As for those muscles
that you have been work-ing so hard to build, inthe most drastic scenariostudies have shown thatyou can lose as much as 80per cent of your strengthand tone in as little as twoweeks. Eighty per cent! That’s a big loss.
For the more decon-ditioned individual, youwill lose even more withany hiatus. Studies havefollowed new exercisersas they began an exerciseprogram and then stoppedit and found that after twomonths of quitting theirnew-found fitness pro-gram they had lost all oftheir original gains. Theywere back to square oneagain. Fit people — youroutcome is not as bad, butit is still worrisome.
After two months offyour program it is estimat-ed that you will lose about30 per cent of your gains.
The question then begsto be asked— how longwill it take to get it all backthen? Researchers say thatis hard to predict, but for
athletes it could take asmuch as three months toregain your previous fit-ness level, and for newexercisers it might be asmuch as three to fourmonths.
It’s a vicious cycle, withno end in sight and abso-lutely no fitness gains to beseen. That is, unless, youdecide to break the habitof thinking that exerciseis something that can bedropped from the sched-ule and put back in againwhen it suits you better.
Exercise is a necessityat maintaining a healthylifestyle. It is our onlyproven fountain of youth,disease-fighter and “I-feel-awesome” medicine allrolled into one. So I askyou, why would you pur-posely give all of that up?PJ Wren is a local trainer
who would love for you tokeep on exercising 365 daysof the year. Need workoutideas? Try any of the 80free workouts available forfree on her website www.fitnesswithpj.com.

Above theshoreline of asheltered covestands a row oftotems. They
lean, crumbling with agebut with still discernibledetails.Carved more than 100
years ago, their faces stareout to sea and their sym-bolism reaches across theages in a mystical way. After decades of talking
about visiting Haida Gwaii,Gary and I finally standamongst the poles at oneof the most sacred sitesin these islands, SGaangGwaay Llnagaay. Wehave but a short week forexploring some of the nat-ural and cultural treasureson this remote archipelagooff the northern coast ofBritish Columbia. The morning of our
SGang Gwaay expeditiondawns clear and calm.Perfect for the hour
and a half float plane ridesouth, over lushly forestedislands surrounded bybrilliant blue waters, toRose Harbour. After don-
ning survival suits, wehave a half hour bouncyzodiac ride to SGangGwaay or Anthony Island. It is a UNESCOWorld
Heritage Site and home toone of the best examplesof a traditional coastalFirst Nations village site.We meet Ken, one of the
Haida Watchmen who actas guardians at the ancientsites during the summer. He relates the legends ofthe animal, human andmythic figures while wewander amongst the mor-tuary and memorial polesof the village.Taller memorial poles
commemorate an ances-tor. Mortuary poles werecarved to honour a chief ordignitary upon their pass-ing and held bent woodboxes with their remains. It is said their spirit stayswith the pole until it falls. Many moss covered
mounds hint at polesreclaimed by the forest. Istand on the beach imag-ining how attractive thevillage must have lookedso long ago. The row ofmortuary poles fronteda line of cedar houses,each with a frontal pole;
all backed by the verdantforest. We learn more about
the ancient ways of lifeat the Haida HeritageCentre at Kay Llnagaayin Skidegate. Each of themonumental poles setalong the beach repre-sents one of six ancestralsouthern villages. Figuresinspired by the natural and
spirit worlds are carvedon the cedar logs and thetops soar almost to theclouds. In the carving shedlie some partly finishedpoles and huge, traditionalHaida canoes. The richsmell of cedar pervadesthe air.Not far from Port
Clements, we walkthrough the quiet, moss-
draped forest and view thefelled Golden Spruce tree. The tree was revered by
islanders and is the stuffof legends for the Haida. Itwas much mourned whenit was cut down as a pro-test against logging. Thereis not much to see of thedead tree but the livingones along the windingpath are humongous andfilter the sunlight. It feelslike we are walking in fairytale woods. Our cultural experi-
ences continue at a tra-ditional Haida dinner atKeenawaii’s Kitchen. We sit family style at
a long table by windowsoverlooking the water.Appetizers include Sguu(dried seaweed), driedK’aaw (herring eggs onkelp) and Gilgii (driedsalmon) artistically servedon a scallop shell.Almost everything
Roberta serves is eithercaught, foraged or grownon Haida Gwaii. The tangywild cranberry sauce ismade from the berriesshe painstakingly pickedone by one. Young help-ers from the village serveup crab, salad, salmon,
venison, vegetables anddessert. The evening con-cludes with some hauntingtraditional Haida songs, accompanied solely by adrum.Fancy feasting calls for
walking and the expansivebeaches like the ones wesee from the viewpointson Tow Hill beckon. Whilewalking near the TlellRiver on East Beach, oneof the longest beaches inNorth America, we meet alocal who says he often hasthis strand all to himself. From where we stand,
we cannot see anyoneelse but spy the far distanttip of Rose Spit. We couldwalk there along the beachbut from here it wouldtake at least four days. Asa parting gift, he hands mea handful of agates he col-lected on his walk. For these, and all our

The University ofVictoria Self-ManagementB.C. office in Ladner is ahub of activity as they rollout a new province-wideself-management pro-gram for cancer survivorsand their families calledCancer: Thriving andSurviving.
Surviving cancer is avictory, yet many peoplefind the time after treat-ment is different than whatthey expected. It can bedifficult to make sense ofhow cancer has affectedand changed them. Alongwith a renewed outlookon life, the feeling that onehas been given a secondchance, there may be painor scars from treatment, changed relationships,a sense of distress overwhat has happened, orpossibly worry about thecancer coming back. It is atime of adjustment, takingcare of oneself, and find-ing a new “normal.” Thisis part of recovery, and itmay take more time thanexpected.
The Cancer: Thriving
and Surviving Self-Management Programwas developed at StanfordUniversity by Dr. KateLorig, a cancer survivorherself. It was designedfor people who are livingwith cancer or have beenaffected by cancer.
The program is facili-tated by two trained peerleaders and teaches skillsto help manage one’shealth after cancer treat-ment, as well as offeringvaluable support on get-ting back to an active andfulfilling life.
“There is a belief thatwhen you have cancer,a year later you’re fine.In reality, you might becancer-free, but you’redifferent. Lots of peopleget stopped by that whenobjectively there is no rea-son they can’t get on withtheir lives,” Lorig says.

A couple weeks ago,a Princeton Universityprofessor, who has animpressive resume ofdegrees, positions andawards, published a“CV of Failures.” In it helisted degree programshe was not accepted into, jobs that he applied forand didn’t get, awardsand scholarships he wasrefused, and academicarticles that were rejected.
It went viral — so muchso that he added anotherfailure to the end of thelist: “This darn CV ofFailures has received waymore attention than myentire body of academicwork.” It was shared onsocial media and featuredon newscasts.
There is somethingoddly encouraging aboutreading of someone else’sfailures. It makes them
seemmore human and wefeel less alone. But the truevalue of failure, whetherours or someone else’s, iswhat we learn.
We often learn morefrom failure than success. We learn what not to donext time, or what to dodifferently.
We also learn howmuchwe need God.
The Apostle Paul, aftera particularly rough time, reflected on how Godwas working in his life.Thinking back on whathe had learned, he wrote:“But (God) said to me,“My grace is sufficientfor you, for my power ismade perfect in weak-ness.” Therefore I willboast all the more gladlyabout my weaknesses, sothat Christ’s power mayrest on me. That is why,for Christ’s sake, I delightin weaknesses, in insults,in hardships, in persecu-tions, in difficulties. Forwhen I am weak, then Iam strong. (2 Corinthians14:9-10, NIV)
Sufficient grace; strengthin weakness. This is themost important lesson wecan learn from failure.Contact Mike at mike@

Let Us Get Real. The first thing to understand is that u.v. whether from the sun orbulbs is the same. A photon of light is a photon of light. There isno magic change to make a sunbed more risky than the solar uvlight. Our sunbeds provide a U.V. spectrum similar to solar uv atnoon - 95% UVA and 5% UVB, the strength of the dose may bestronger but the duration is shorter which is why you don’t burnif a sunbed is used properly. In fact cancer care Ontario, in a 2013report on ultraviolet radiation reported that the melanoma risk foroutdoor exposure was 61% versus 15% for indoor devices whenused properly. So based on this research, using a sunbed is 4 timesless risky than outdoor sun exposure. That is certainly a differentmessage than what is often reported for the risk of indoor sunbed
use. Is there a “hidden agenda”? - just asking!See www.tanresponsibly.ca for a complete set of standards. Ourstaff have been trained extensively in North American standards. Our clients tell us a “base tan” before their holidays and summerworks for them.
Is this “No U.V. light message the same as : Don’t use salt! Toquickly be replaced by “oh a little salt is o.k.” or don’t use butterto be replaced later by “oh a little butter is good for you” or redwine is bad to soon be replaced by “a little red wine is good for ourdigestion.” Or “Don’t eat red meat or too much fat” to be replacedby, (Front Page April 3, 2016 Province) “We should be eating morefat and red meat.” How long do we have to wait before we are toldoh! By the way we do need U.V. light in healthy moderate doses? With all these second thoughts are we finally getting real?
Are we being lead by the nose? - still just asking!
Look at these outdoor Burners, they probably lost the fun of theirnext 3 days of vacation they did not sleep easy for a few nights.
Acclimatize Your Skin Before Summer And“Hot Place” Holidays.
OW! No Base Tan!

Coping with an arthritic hip, I called the TWC at therecommendation of a friend. Absolutely no regrets!Their staff is very friendly and supportive. From myfirst class with Anne, my activity without pain hasimproved massively. Where walking would cause mepain, I am now climbing stairs pain free. I now lookforward to activities that I used to avoid because ofthe pain. My posture has improved and I feel thatI am on a path to a stronger healthier me.

Research has left no doubt that Vitamin Ddeficiency - which affects 97% of Canadiansin winter - is nothing less than a Canadiancrisis and world wide problem.
Dr. William Grant (www.sunarc.org)calculates the cost of Vitamin D deficiencyto be no less than $9 billion annually.
A Creighton University study showedthat people rich in Vitamin D haveup to a 77% lower overall cancer risk.
The Canadian Pediatric Societyrecommended that pregnant womenconsult their physicians about getting2000 I.U. of Vitamin D daily - 10 timesthe current government recommendations.
The Canadian Cancer Society has calledfor all Canadian adults to get 1000 I.U. ofVitamin D daily.
The key message the Vitamin D Societywants Canadians to receive is: that we areat risk of Vitamin D deficiency becauseof our country’s relatively weak sunshinemost of the year and the fact thatVitamin D is rare in diet.
With thanks to the Vitamin D Societyfor this info, who incidentally recommendsasking your doctor for an annual blood testto check your Vitamin D levels.Optimal Vitamin D blood levels are50ng/ml (125nmol/L). Calcidiol Test.

One of Delta Ice Hawks biggestwins in their 19-year history mayhave come at municipal hall.
At last month’s Delta parks andrecreation commission meeting,Ice Hawks owner Wes Mussiopleaded his case on why thejunior “B” hockey team shouldbe able to continue playing out ofthe Ladner Leisure Centre for thecoming season.
It was back in March, the com-mission recommended the Ice
Hawks not have their season-to-season contract with Deltarenewed to free up more timefor youth user groups for thenext three-year ice allocation. However, Mussio told the com-mission the Ice Hawks should benot be classified as a non-Delta/commercial group but rather anorganized youth sports ice user— pointing to the team alwayshaving several local teens on itsroster.
He said the club would onlyrequire ice time for one homegame each week and two practice
slots would be moved to the GreatPacific Forum for the coming sea-son.
Mussio added it was too latefor the team to find an arena else-where for the 2016-17 campaign.
The commission agreed andsaid the decision needed to berevisited.
A motion was passed for the IceHawks’ contract for a three-hourgame slot be extended one furtheryear.
The agreement would thenbe looked at again no later thanNovember, giving the Ice Hawks
adequate time to find a newhome should the contract not berenewed or if they even wish tore-locate.
Mussio met with the Deltaparks and recreation director KenKuntz last week where the homegame ice time for the 2016-17 sea-son was further discussed.
It is expected to be finalized atnext week’s parks and recreationcommission meeting and pre-sented to council at the end of themonth as part of the new three-year ice allocation for main usergroups.

Islandersneed to tightenupDelta haswon4of 5 games but have to bemuchbetter at ownendof the floorMARK BOOTHmbooth@delta-opt imist .com
High scoring and thrilling finish-es maybe exciting for the fans butnot for a coach trying to take theDelta Islanders where they havenever gone before.
The Islanders made it four winsin five games out of the gate witha wild 16-15 triumph over theNewWestminster Salmonbellieson Tuesday night at Queen’s ParkArena.
Delta is averaging 13 goals pergame and features the top twoscorers in the B.C. Junior JuniorLacrosse League in Tre Leclaireand Evan Messenger, with 31 and25 points respectively.
If that’s not enough, ChaseFraser and Jon Phillips havereturned from U.S. college balland provide even more scoringpunch. Fraser has 11 points in justtwo games, while Phillips had fourgoals in his season debut againstthe Bellies.
However, all is not well at theother end of the floor.
The Islanders are surrenderingnearly as many goals as they havescored (64-62) and have alreadyracked up a whopping 144 pen-alty minutes — 74 more than thenext highest team in the league(Victoria 70).
“I might just be the most unhap-piest 4-1 coach in league history,”joked head coach Greg Rennie.“Our goaltending is not good
enough right now and we are play-ing undisciplined lacrosse, takingfar too many penalties, espe-cially in the attacking zone. I’m notimpressed at all.
“We are never going to beat thetop teams playing this way.”
Rennie has already benchedplayers for unnecessary penaltiesor poor play and says he will haveeven more options with veteransReece Callies and Jayden Campbellset to rejoin the team.
The Islanders had all kinds oftrouble with the Langley Thunderin their home opener last Saturday,
needing a seven point night fromLeClaire and a shorthanded thirdperiod goal from Fraser to help pullout a 13-11 win.
Tuesday’s win was hardly agoaltending clinic as Ryland Hoodstruggled with a .706 save percent-age while the NewWest goalten-ders combined to allow 16 goals onjust 41 shots.
“Fortunately, their guys werestruggling more,” added Rennie.“Ryland is battling a knee injuryright now but knows he can playbetter. He has to.”
The Isles did get a glimpse of
the league’s best goaltender whenChristian Del Bianco limited themto just four goals on 36 shots in an8-4 loss last week to the defendingchampion Coquitlam Adanacs.
The Islanders led 3-2 after 20minutes but didn’t score againuntil Messenger found the net with5:33 remaining.
Delta has a home-and-homeseries with Nanaimo (1-3) startingSaturday (5 p.m.) at the LadnerLeisure Centre. The games will takeplace over eight days giving Renniequality practice time to get hisplayers firing on all cylinders.
Homegrown standout EvanMessenger is second in league scoring for the 4-1 Delta Islanders.

It’s next stop Calgaryfor the Seaside Surf boysvolleyball team that domi-nated last week’s B.C. U16Club Championships fromstart-to-finish.
With a roster featuringsix local players and DeltaPacers senior boys coachJay Tremonti serving as anassistant, the South Surreybased club didn’t drop asingle set en route to pro-vincial gold.
That has been the storyall season as Seaside hascompeted mainly againstU18 opposition thenpromptly taken care of U16teams when they do dropback down to their own agegroup.
The Surf went 3-0 inround-robin play andcompleted the provincialrun with three more winsin the tier one playoffs, capped by a rather easy25-14 and 25-15 victoryover Vancouver’s ApexMassive in the champion-ship match.
Now it’s off to Calgary,May 21-23 for the U16 WestNationals.
“The key thing aboutour season and our run togold has been the com-petitive nature of our prac-tices,” explained Seasidehead coach Dave Dooley.“We have 13 players onour roster, as well as one‘red-shirt,’ and guys areconstantly being pushed toimprove.
“In fact, the last practicebefore (provincials) weplayed a wash drill that wasfiercely contested, and the‘starting’ players ended uplosing to the ‘bench’ guys,an amazing reality checkbefore the championship!”
Seaside’s roster is rep-
resented by eight differ-ent schools — Delta, EarlMarriott, Semiahmoo,Elgin Park, WalnutGrove, Burnsview, PacificAcademy and GabrielleRoy. The core has beenplaying together for aboutfour years.
The players include:Kevin Stewart, MichaelDowhaniuk, Jordan Payne,Hugh Brown, AndresBarrero, Keatan Mann,Teo Ardanaz, Evan Hixt,Markus Niebuhr, GregMoore, Malachi McMullin,Adam Paige and SamMcPherson.
“Equally important has
been the depth of ourroster and the ability ofplayers to assume differentroles,” added Dooley. “Thistruly makes us a team notonly of six on the floor, buta team of six on the floorwith seven on the benchsupporting from the side-lines and ready to step in atany point to get a job done. Many of the matches inthe championship sawmeusing up to eight of my12 allowed substitutions, ensuring that all 13 playersstayed well-rested.
“It’s been a great seasonso far, with one more goalyet to be achieved.”
GoldenrunforU16SeasideSurf
After a dominating run at provincials, Seaside Surf will be looking for more suc-cess at the U16 Nationals in Calgary, May 21-23.

After a year hiatus, theBoundary Bay Air Show returns
next weekend.Boundary Bay Airport manager
Lyle Soetaert said organizers have
lined up a lot of great acts for the
free event, which is set for the
afternoon of Saturday, July 28.The show’s aerial lineup fea-
tures Red Bull Air Race pilotPete McLeod, L29 jets flying in
formation, a simulated air race
with Harvards and much more.
There will also be displays on the
ground. The air show is presented by
the Corporation of Delta in part-
nership with Alpha Aviation, the
company that operates the munici-
pally-owned airport.• For more on the show, see
pages 27-30.
Elephant’s Ears!
Tsawwassen’s Doris Segers’ granddaughter Corrine Van Vliet (left) and daughter Kathy Van Vliet pose for a photo
beside a huge plant in Segers’ back yard. Segers calls the plant “Elephant’s Ears” and says the leaves range from
three to six feet wide. “It’s really, really big,” she said, noting the plant is still growing.
Museum is tooLadner-centricThe Delta Museum and
Archives wants to be more well
rounded by bringing together the
three solitudes.That’s the description executive
director Mark Sakai offers when it
comes to Delta’s three communi-
ties — Ladner, Tsawwassen and
North Delta — which all have
their own unique histories, demo-
graphics and concerns. The museum, which is located
in Ladner Village and whoseboard of trustees is mostly from
that community, still seems some-
what Ladner-centric, he said.In his society’s most recent
newsletter, Sakai discussed how
artifacts, photographs and docu-
ments in the collection could use
more flavour from Tsawwassen
and North Delta. He told the Optimist that many
of the museum’s exhibits andprograms are based on Ladner
history, an unacceptable situation
he’d like to see changed by filling
in the gaps.“It is a challenge to connect the
communities that are so different
and have their own reasons to feel
that they’re Deltans,” he said.Delta is in a unique position
in the Lower Mainland because
there’s such a wide geographic
distance between the major popu-
lation nodes, he explained. The largest community is North
Delta, attached to Surrey, while
both Ladner and Tsawwassenessentially function as islands.
What’s more, there doesn’t seem
to be a natural north-south con-
nection, which poses a challenge
for the organization trying toserve all of Delta.
Executive director appeals to Tsawwassen
and North Delta to help bolster collection
