As this church is currently on its annual break, there is nothing much to report for the month of August. However, some very noteworthy activities took place in July, and they deserve mentioning here. ANNUAL CHURCH BAZAAR Our 61st Annual Bazaar was held on July 4th and 5th. Thanks to our dedicated and hardworking members and their families and friends, the affair was its usual success. In spite of the extremely hot weather both days, the bazaar was attended by a great number of patrons, young and old, who came to enjoy our offering of various tasty foods, game booths, bingo and a handicraft booth with an array of crafts and baked goods. The rousing performance by the ever-popular Sacramento Taiko Dan was an added crowd pleaser. BCA HONORS HIGH SCHOOL GRADUATE At our monthly service in July, Blythe Nishi was recognized by Buddhist Churches of America on the occasion of her high school graduation. Rev. Roy Mayhugh presented her with a certificate on behalf of the BCA. Congratulations, Blythe! BEREAVEMENT Mrs. Yae Kusaba, a longtime friend and member of the Walnut Grove Buddhist Church, passed away on July 3. We were always so glad to see Yae and her husband, the late Henry Kusaba, at our annual New Year’s luncheon, knowing they came all the way from Grass Valley to be with us. We extend our sincere sympathies to her family members. OBON ODORI HELD ON JULY 18 People came from near and far to join our annual Bon Odori. Many of the out-of-town participants are former Delta residents and have families and friends living here. Others came because they love to dance and/or watch Walnut Grove‘s homey and joyful ways of celebrating Obon. All present seemed to be enjoying the event. As usual, Craig Nakahara, our DJ, provided the music for the approximately fifty dancers, who were led by Sandi Kawamura and her cousins, Karen Adachi and Yvonne Ishimoto. The latter two are active members of the Sacramento Betsuin and, on very short notice, graciously agreed to learn our dances and help lead our dancers. During intermission, cold drinks and sack bentos were served to all dancers and spectators. The refreshments were prepared by Chairman Mitsuko Norikane and her assistants Toshiko Hamada, Christy Ishizuka, Sandi Kawamura and Nellie Kawamura.

CEMETERY VISITS On July 19, Reverend Katsuya Kusunoki and Reverend Roy E. Mayhugh conducted grave site services at the Franklin and Rio Vista Cemeteries, and followed with a brief service at our Nokotsudo. OBON SERVICE Officiated by Rev. Katsuya Kusunoki and Rev. Roy E. Mayhugh, Obon and Hatsu-Bon Services were held on July 19, with Rev. Yuki Sugahara of the Florin Buddhist Church as guest minister. Also present on the Onaijin was Florin’s Minister’s Assistant Tadao Koyama. Audrey Nishi served as service chairman, and Myra Okasaki as organist. The families of the late Chizuko Oto and the late Lily Iseri observed Hatsubon and were given lovely floral bouquets personally supplied and presented by Rev. Kusunoki. The larger than usual Sangha enjoyed the English and Japanese Dharma talks delivered by Rev. Sugahara. At the conclusion of the service, attendees were invited to join our guests for tea in the adjoining hall. We are pleased that this too was well attended. COMING SPECIAL EVENTS A Bazaar meeting is scheduled at 10:00 A.M. on Saturday Sept. 12, with financial reports and critique. All interested parties are asked to attend. Fall Ohigan Service on Sunday, Sept. 20, from 1:30 PM. with guest speaker, Reverend (Emeritus) Masao Kakuryu Kodani of the Senshin Buddhist Temple in Los Angeles.

[The 70th

Anniversary of A-Bomb]

“The basis for peace is for people to understand the pain of others.”

An atomic bomb victim, Mr.Katsuji Yoshida, left this passage for us. He was a member of my family temple,

Kougenji. He passed away a few years ago.

I think Human beings have some weapons because of their/our weakness and fearfulness. We need to

understand the pain of others and have harmony in our mind to create “peace”.

The month of August is very important month for me to think about “peace”.

On August 6th

1945, and on August 9th

1945, the atomic bombs were dropped by the USA army on Hiroshima

and Nagasaki. Tens of thousands of people were killed. My father who was born in Nagasaki, Japan in 1938 had

personally experienced WW2 and he was exposed to radiation when the atomic bomb was dropped onto

Nagasaki city.

I want to share with you a story, which my father wrote from his recollection of the summer of 1945.

[My father’s recollection] I am now living in peace. Because of living in peace, I am forgetting how valuable “peace” is. I made my

resolution to make an effort to create a world without war because I experienced the hell of war and the atomic

bomb. But, now, it seems that I am forgetting about my resolution. I really feel that I need to remember my

experience and resolution, again.

I want to introduce to you to a passage from “NIDOTONAI JINSEI DAKARA (Because my life is

unrepeatable)” written by a poet, Mr. Shinmin Sakamura.

“Because my life is unrepeatable, I want to devote my effort to create this world without war and write many

poems to convey how valuable “peace” is. I want to write my poems to the younger generations to whom I

bequeath this wish after I die.” This poem touched a chord deep within me. Therefore, I started writing my

unforgettable memories, which were deeply branded on my mind.

August 15th

, my family temple was full. My family temple was the temporary Headquarters of the Nagasaki

Newspaper. Everybody was listening to the news on a radio that Japan surrendered to the USA.

A rumor was circulating that the American soldiers were about to land in Nagasaki very soon. Therefore, people

started moving away. I walked, walked, walked. I crossed over the HIMI pass. I am not sure how far I walked.

My mother was pulling me along and was shouldering my younger brother so that she could run miles away

from the American soldiers because they might kill us or capture us.

I recently contemplated that day. I wondered why my mother had so much power and energy because my

mother was unhealthy and sickly.

“I must help my kids at all cost.”

I think that was my mother’s thought. My mother’s wish is one of my big and important causes of my life,

which is to be able to live now. I am here now because of my mother’s wish.

I think kids are living each single day because they are receiving their mother’s thoughts, father’s thoughts, and

their family and friends’ thoughts. These thoughts become the kids’ power and energy to live their life as much

as they can.

Our founder ,Shinran Shonin, wrote in his writing, Wasan, Hymn.

“When sentient beings think about Amida

Just as a child thinks of its mother

They indeed see the Tathagata – who is never distant –

Both in the present and in the future.”

(CWS 357, NO.115)

Now I am being moved deeply by Shinran Shonin’s reflection and appreciation of Amida Buddha through this

Wasan hymn, Wasan and my life after the WW2.

Anniversary of A-Bomb]

“The basis for peace is for people to understand the pain of others.”

An atomic bomb victim, Mr. Katsuji Yoshida, left this message for us before he passed away in 2010. He was a

member of my family temple, Kougenji and also a good friend of my father. He was thirteen years old when the

A-bomb was dropped on Nagasaki on August 9th

, 1945. He was badly burned because he was close to ground

zero. Later, he made a big effort to tell his experience to younger generations. He also came to the U.S.A. to

convey his experience and wish for peace. I truly appreciate his words, which are related to the Buddha’s great

compassion. I would like to introduce his article written in 2005 and think about “Peace” with you.

<Suddenly “Kaboom!”>

I cannot forget the day even though I try to forget it. It happened on August 9th

, 1945 at 11:02 AM.

The air-raid warning had been called off in the morning, so my friends and I, seven of us, left a place of

refuge at a commercial high school and began to walk back to an industrial high school. On the way there, we

found a water well by a farmer’s house. We were so thirsty so we decided to stop there and have some water. By

chance, I looked up and saw two parachutes coming down from a break in the clouds. My friends also held their

hands toward sun and looked at the parachutes. At that moment, “Kaboom”, An A-bomb was exploded. It is

difficult to find words to describe the moment.

My body was blown off and flew over a vegetable field, and road. I flew to a rice field about 40 meters

away (about 44 yards). Some people described the sound of the explosion of A-bomb “Pika-Don”. However, I

didn’t understand at all what happened at that time. I didn’t feel any pain. I was quite conscious while my body

was in the air. ( I think it was about a few seconds.)

After a while, I felt burning pain and my body was curling up. It was as if my body was a dried squid

that was being grilled. I only had experienced slight a burn that formed blisters before. However, this time my

burn was more severe. I was covered in blood and my skin was hanging down. My head’s skin was still there

but got charred. The cold water in the rice filed brought me back to myself. At first, I felt at ease that it was just

a burn and I could cure it if I applied some ammonia water. I didn’t feel any terrible pain. I experienced severe

pain later.

<It was a nightmare. The Urakami river was dyed a blood red and was filled with people.>

When I looked around, everybody, men, women, young and old people, were burned and had charred

skin. These people screamed and came down from a hill and gathered at a riverbank. I could hear an airplane’s

menacing sound from the sky. I covered my body with leaves to hide. Around that time, I began to feel fear. My

burned body felt more pain.

After the explosion, my friends and I were talking to each other without knowing what happened to our

faces. One person had a piece of mirror and we looked at it. Something weird was reflected in the mirror. We

were shocked and frightened more when we saw our burned faces.

We could not distinguish these people who were walking down from the hill. We couldn’t tell if they

were men or women. They were almost naked. When we went near ground zero, we found a charred body, a

person whose eyes fell out, a person whose internal organs came out, and a person who had no arms and legs.

People wandered around. We found many burned people at the Urakami River near Shimo Ohashi. The river

was dyed the color of blood and oil. It was very dirty. Some of the people went down to the river and drank the

dirty water. They died there one after another. We saw the horrid sight from shore. Our school song said “The

Urakami river is pure and beautiful…”. The river was dyed a blood red and filled with dead people. It was the

horrible day.

「平和の原点は、人間の痛みがわかる心をもつことです。」

長崎で被爆した故・吉田勝二さんは、この言葉を残して、２０１０年に往生されました。吉田さん

は、私の自坊、光源寺の門徒で父の親友でもありました。原爆で体や顔に大やけどをおった吉田さん

は、自身の体験をできるだけ多くの人へ伝え、平和な世の実現のために尽力されました。吉田さんが

残してくださったその言葉は、仏様の慈悲に通じる思いです。吉田さんが１０年前に書かれた体験談

とその思いを聞かせていただき、みなさんとともに、平和について考えていきたいと思います。

<いきなり「ドカーン」とやられた>

忘れようとしても忘れることが出来ない６０年前８月９日午前１１寺２分…。

空襲警報が解除になったというので私を含め学友７人は、油木町にあった避難場所「商業の堤」か

ら工業学校に戻ろうと堤を下っていた。商業高校と大橋の中間のあたりに来た時に喉が渇いたので、

道端にある農家の井戸水を汲もうとしていた時だった。右上をひょいと何気なく見ると雲の切れ間か

ら落下傘が二つ落ちてくる、友達も手をかざし落下傘を眺めていると、突然、何と表現したらいいの

か、いきなり「ドカーン」とやられた。

私の体は畑を越え、道路を飛び越え、田んぼの中まで４０数メートルあまりも吹き飛ばされた。

人々は、“原爆ピカドン”と言うが、私はこの時、何が起こったのか判らなかった。瞬時の出来事、

痛さは全く感じなかったが、飛ばされながらも意識ははっきりしていた。（ほんの数秒と思われ

る。）

ちょうどスルメを焼いている状態、じりじりと体が丸くなるような感じだった。火傷というと、水

膨れだけしか頭になかった私は、気がついたときは、全身血だらけ、皮膚は剥がれ体の下の方にだら

りとぶら下がっていた。頭も皮膚は付いていたもののどす黒く焼け焦げていた。田んぼの水の冷たさ

で気がついたが、「なあに火傷じゃないか、アンモニアを付ければすぐ直るさ」とたかをくくり、今

思うほどの悩みは全然感じなかった。

<全くの悪夢 血に染まり、人で埋まった浦上川>

ところが周囲を見渡すと老若男女が全身赤むけの裸となり、焼けただれた身体で山の方から泣き叫

びながら下りてきて、堤のそばで一塊となった。空には不気味な飛行機の爆音が聞こえる。敵機に見

つかるからといって、焼け残った草の葉で体を隠したが、その時から恐怖に取りつかれ始め、焼かれ

た身体はちかちかと痛みを覚え始めた。

お互い自分の顔を知るよしもなく言い合っていたが、隣にいた人が鏡のかけらを持っていた。友人

同士「何か顔がものすごく変っとるぞ！」と、割れた鏡で自分の顔を見て驚き、恐ろしさがさらにつ

のった。

男か女か見分けもつかない姿、全裸に近い人々が続々と山から下りてくる。爆心地の方に向かうと

黒焦げで炭化した人、目が飛び出してる人、内臓が飛び出した人、手足がない人たちが右往左往して

いた。下大橋の浦上川にたどり着くとここも焼けただれた多くの人が、油と血と汚れた水、その水を

飲みながら次々に亡くなっていった。私たちは、岸辺からその様子をじっと眺めていたが、校歌にあ

る“流れも清き浦上川…”と歌われた川は血に染まり、そして、人々で埋まっていった。全くの悪夢

だった。（つづく）

SPECIAL THANKS FROM THE 2015 BAZAAR CHAIR, AKI ITO Every year out of the 52 weeks there is one week that will require the most effort and support especially the weekend of the bazaar. It's the behind the scene preparation from construction and food preparation requiring 110% effort from all the members and volunteers to make it safe and enjoyable with good food during the bazaar weekend. I, as Bazaar Chairperson for 2015, would like to take this time to thank all the church members and all the volunteers. The WGBC and I greatly appreciate the countless hours and dedication that it takes for a successful bazaar. So once again, thank you to all the church members, volunteers, and to the general public that came out to support the bazaar. PLANNING AND SONENKAI NEWS FROM AKI ITO The Walnut Grove Buddhist Church just underwent a major restoration project at the cost of $21,000. The project consisted of refinishing the columns and replacing the sidewalk and these expenses were minor compared to the complete restoration of the entire lower portion of the south and east wall. Thanks to AD New Construction it was all completed before the bazaar. The Walnut Grove Buddhist Church will be holding its annual golf tournament fundraising event on October 10, 2015 at Wildhawk Golf Course hosted by the Sonenkai to help with the cost of preserving the church. Well, bazaar is over, and I for one am looking forward to a chance to relax and join the other

members of our dharma circle to listen to the talk and discuss the topic with each other! We meet on

September 20th at 10 AM for meditation practice, and at 10:30 for service. Adult study and school will

follow service as usual.

BUDDHIST WOMEN’S ASSOCIATION NEWS Hopefully all our members have had a chance to rest from all their hard work at this year’s bazaar. What a wonderful turnout of dedicated members and volunteers we had! Thanks to all of you who made another successful year of superb food! Our next meeting is scheduled for September 6th at 11:00 AM.
