    DELPHOS FIRE & RESCUE

History of the Delphos Fire DepartmentThe Historian is wondering how many

persons, now residents of The city of Delphos, Allen and Van Wert Counties,as it officially is designated can rememberthe days when the old frame Fire EngineHouse was located where the munici-pal building now stands: How many willremember the rubber buckets first used infighting fires? Or who can call to memorythe advent of the hand pumper, responsiblefor many a blister in the palms of the handsof valiant and sturdy citizens of Delphosin earlier days? Or who can remember thetransition from hand drawn to horse drawnequipment?

In these days of motorize firefightingapparatus, made necessary by the onwardtrends of the times perhaps only the olderpresent and former residents of Delphoswill recall events of the days when yourhustling and enterprising city forged itsway upward and onward as a desirableplace of residence, a business communityof no small fame and so well governedby its chosen officials that no examinerfor the State Bureau of Inspection andSupervision of Public Offices has everfound occasion to seriously criticize.

It was not until after May 3, 1872, theday of Black Friday as it was later called, when a disastrous fire swept over Delphos, that determined steps were taken in thedirection of providing adequate firefight-ing apparatus. Public demand for betterfire protection resulted in official action bythe town council. The citizens of Delphosdetermined that never again would they bein a position of helplessness should the firefiend attack.

The history of the Delphos FireDepartment, the comparatively limitednumber of fires, and unusually small lossessince that time attests to the wisdom of thepeople, and the efficiency of the firefight-

ers. Delphos has been an organized munic-ipality since March 3, 1851. Previously, the territory comprised four settlements,Section Ten and East Bredeick on theAllen County side of the town and Howardand West Bredeick on the Van WertCounty side.

At that time the only firefighting equip-ment consisted of buckets, water takenfrom the canal, the creeks or from wells, depending on where the fire was located. The buckets were passed along lines of citizens, serving as volunteers. The cityfathers, recognizing that a bucket brigadeafforded small protection against a seriousfire in a growing community, took stepson April 25, 1857, to remedy the situa-tion. Authority was voted to purchase sixfire ladders at a cost of $72. Practicallynothing more was added until after BlackFriday. Forty-five stru ctures were con-sumed by that fire at an estimated cost of $150,000 in damages. The conflagrationprevailed for the most part in the businessdistrict between Second and Third streets, and Miami-Erie canal and WashingtonStreet.

Again the public demand for better fireprotection resulted in action by the towncouncil, who in 1872 caused to be erecteda fire engine house 20 by 40 feet at a cost of $250. A hand pumper was also purchasedfrom the city of Xenia, with 500 feet of hose. That same year the Washington FireEngine and Hose Company was formedby John Walsh, Sr. This was the first orga-nized firefighting unit for the municipality.Feb. 14, 1873, a hose reel was purchased, and the construction of seven fire cisternsof 250 barrel capacity each, located in dif-ferent parts of the village, was authorized.

The first steam fire engine, a Silsby, was brought to Delphos in 1874. A secondsteamer was purchased in 1880, an Ahrens.

That same year, an up-to-date hook andladder truck and equipment was purchased, and an organization known as the J.W.Feely Hook and Ladder Company, wasoperated independent of the WashingtonFire Engine and Hose Company.

In 1883, a new steamer was procured, the older steam pumper being turned inas part payment. After the City Hall nowthe Safety Building on E. Second Streetwas erected, in 1888, the two firefight-ing units then operating were united andbecame known as the Delphos VolunteerFire Department. However, each groupcontinued to elect its own officers until in1898 both organizations were disbanded, but reorganized the same year, adopting aconstitution and by-laws which place bothunder the command of the same chief andhis assistants, functioning as a single unit. The firefighters were paid 50 cents foreach alarm answered.

During the years when horse-drawnfirefighting apparatus was in use, promptresponse to alarms sounded by the oldfaithful bell in the tower over City Hallwas the order. Fire losses were reducedaccordingly. William Lehmkuhle, JohnA. Burkett, and M.H. Westrich followedin the order named in those days as chiefsof the department. B.H. Shabbing, FrankFoster, Adam Weger and A.M. Fettig wereamong those who served as hostlers anddrivers in that period, caring for the fourbig dappler gray horses.

Before the horses were secured for thetask of whisking the apparatus to fires, members of the hook and ladder truck vol-unteers attained considerable prominencein tournaments staged during the annualconventions, making runs with the truck.

The Delphos Department was motor-ized in 1916 by the purchase of a com-bination hose and chemical truck from

the Service Truck Company of Wabash,Ind. This served well until 1919 when aGramm truck chassis was secured fromthe Gramm Truck Company, a local enter-prise. It was equipped with a 500 gallonBoyer pumper and chemical tanks. Later, the chemical tanks were removed and thetruck converted into a triple combination, equipped to carry 400 gallons of water inits booster tank. This firefighter is theengine which the Jaycees enshrined in amuseum at Canal Parking Lot on WestSecond Street.

In May, 1930, the department wasstill further modernized with the installa-tion of a 1,000 gallon triple-combinationSeagrave pumper, fully equipped. Fourfull-time firemen, two on each shift, andone substitute made up the regular force. Two part-time men were added for nightservice and fifteen volunteers were on callat all times.

The current available number of vol-unteers firefighters is at 30 which wasincreased in 2005 from 28. The full timestaff consists of 7 personnel.

The current fire department apparatusconsists of the following: 1997 E-OneCyclone II Custom 1,500 GPM Pumperw/preplumbed Class A & Class B FoamSystems, 1983 1,000 GPM Ford/BoyerPumper, International 2002 truck with2,000 gal. tank, 2008 American LaFrance,1250 GPM pump with 2500 gal. wate tank,2002 E-One Typhoon 18 Non-WalkinHeavy Rescue, 2002 Chevrolet H.D. 3/4Ton 4 DR Pickup Primary use 1st OutEMS response and tow the 2000 PaceAmerican Water Rescue Trailer, Chiefsvehicle - GMC 1997 Yukon, Medic 1 2007Braun Ambulance Ambulance, Medic 21999 Braun Ambulance, Medic 3, 2003AEV Trauma Hawk Ambulance and a2005 Ford Wildfire Grass Truck.

STOP HOME FIRES BEFORE THEY STAR Check the cords on all appliances and electronics. Replace any frayed or damaged cords or wires. Do not overload outlets or rely heavily on multi-plug power strips.

Keep cords out of the reach of children and pets. When cooking in the kitchen, always be present while food is on the stove or in the oven. Flare-ups can occur at a moments notice. Dont store items over the stove. They can fall and ignite. Turn pot handles so that children cant reach them and pull them over, risking burns. Be sure appliance vents have room to breathe. Have the chimney checked and cleaned regularly. Use a metal or glass fireplace screen to block embers. Limit the use of portable space heaters around the home. Use extreme caution with cigarettes and ashtrays. Empty them frequently when signs of heat and burning are gone. Use light bulbs that are at the recommended wattage for a fixture. Dont place any electrical items by water in the bathroom. Store flammable materials in a locked metal container in the basement or garage. Service the furnace and hot water heater on a regular basis. Do not store items too close to the furnace. Be sure the home is equipped with working smoke detectors on every level. Keep one or two fire extinguishers charged and at the ready.

A fire at home can occur in just about any room of the

house and even outdoors. While one cant account fornatural disasters or other

unforseen problems, thereare many steps homeowners

    can take to prevent fires.
