Specializing in Regional Relevance for 50 Years!
It's been my distinct privilege since October 2003 to lead our publishing company as president and publisher, and now into 2017, Shelby Publishing's 50th Anniversary. The competition has been steady, even fierce at times, but we have methodically survived and thrived. Our truly unique publishing model—the only publication delivering national coverage via five regional editions, in both print & digital formats—came about because we have been fortunate to assemble talented, creative minds in all disciplines of our business.
Content—Lorrie Griffith, our editor-in-chief, directs an editorial staff (we like to call our "Newsroom") second to none. News, features or regional perspectives, this group of professionals squeeze every word out of a story. One prominent CEO in our industry even quipped, "If you didn't read it in The Shelby Report, it didn't happen."
From the Publisher
![Page 3: Delivering Print and Digital Content with a Unique Perspective · publications to read. It provides thoughtful, intriguing content that definitely gives me food for thought as my](https://reader031.fdocuments.in/reader031/viewer/2022042007/5e708e8595f91f144741ecf5/html5/thumbnails/3.jpg)
“Your publication is important for every executive to read because the majority of our industry are regional and indepen-dent operators. Where else is a regional chain like Stater’s, and a CEO like myself, going to get that information, except from reliable
sources like yours? So we thank you for that service to the industry.”
“It is the only industry-fo-cused news magazine that is informa-tion-packed, people- and company-focused and regional in nature. It addresses the topics and issues that are important to me in my geographical market area and relevant to my business.
“Thanks for creating such a targeted and comprehensive update on our industry every month. It saves me time and gives me what I want and need, every time I read it!”

“I look forward to The Shelby Report”
“The Shelby Report is an extremely useful periodical that I always look forward to reading. It keeps us well informed of happenings within the industry, our states and various markets and assists us in following people and promotions within our industry.”

“…an extremely useful periodical”
“The Shelby Report continues to be one of my favorite industry publications to read. It provides thoughtful, intriguing content that definitely gives me food for thought as my team and I strategically plan for Smart & Final’s future. Its regional focus is especially important for giving operators deeper
insight into the trends, innovations and people driving change in the markets we each operate in. I highly recommend it to all!”

Ron JohnstonPresident & Publisher
![Page 4: Delivering Print and Digital Content with a Unique Perspective · publications to read. It provides thoughtful, intriguing content that definitely gives me food for thought as my](https://reader031.fdocuments.in/reader031/viewer/2022042007/5e708e8595f91f144741ecf5/html5/thumbnails/4.jpg)
We feel fortunate to be part of the food industry.
Part of the charm is that food is a universal thing…we’ve
got to eat to live (or, if you’re like me, the opposite is
probably more true). We get to learn about new food
products every day, which is tough around lunchtime
but ultimately satisfying. We also get to sharpen our
minds with the new technology that’s flooding the industry these days, from
shopper apps to in-store beacons to warehouse automation. There’s never a
shortage of new things to learn and discover.
It’s not just that, though; we enjoy the people of the industry and getting to
know them and their stories. We have gained a reputation over the last 50
years for bringing you a larger helping of people stories than some of our
fellow trade publications, and it seems that it’s a welcome part of our content
package.
Yes, that’s right…50 years. That’s something we’ll be celebrating in 2017, with
the centerpiece being our June issues of The Shelby Report (our sister
publication, The Griffin Report of the Northeast, celebrated its 50th last year). It
will be a labor of love to try to deliver an issue that captures half a century of
publications and the people behind them (and in them). We hope it will be a
keepsake issue for many of you, and if you want to be a part of it, please call
your Shelby sales representative. If you don’t have one, call us and we’ll take
care of you.
Our late founder, Gary G. Shelby, and our current owner and chairman,
Dathan Mitchell, both had experience in the food industry—Mr. Shelby with
Kimberly Clark and Mr. Mitchell with Winn-Dixie and also a produce-centered
independent supermarket chain. Our publisher, Ron Johnston, has spent
more than three decades on the publishing side and has vast stores of
knowledge about our industry. We have a rich heritage of leadership that has
a vested interest in the industry, not just publications. And we want to see
that continue to that 100-year mark.
So that’s what drives us. (Well, that, and the need to eat.)
“The Shelby Report is a terrific resource"
“The Shelby Report is one of the tools we depend on”
“The Shelby Report is a terrific resource for staying in touch with major happenings in the marketplace—and for keeping up with old friends!”
“Keeping up with our ever-changing industry is critical to our success in the marketplace. The Shelby Report is one of the tools we depend on to bring us up-to-date, relevant information on a consistent basis. They provide diverse perspectives on all aspects of the food industry for retailers and partners, large and small. We count on The Shelby Report to keep us informed.””
For current, up-to-date knowledge of what’s happening in the grocery industry, I always look to The Shelby Report. This publication is consistently one of the most complete sources of information for the industry available to the grocer. The coverage and facts are not only timely, but extremely useful, keeping me up-to-date on a range of topics each month. I can stay apprised of our industry and gain valuable insight into the strides grocers are making across America.
“The content is relevant and all-encompassing”
“…consistently one of the most complete sources of
information for the industry”
“Whether you are seeking insight into consumer trends or inspiration from the accomplishments of industry colleagues, there is something in The Shelby Report for everyone. The content is relevant and all-encompassing, which is particularly important in an industry as fast-paced and constantly changing as ours. It has helped me stay connected in a comprehensive way.”
