Students seeking to register for coursework, will do so by visiting the Center for Economic Development located at 3209 S Staples Street, Corpus Christi, TX 78411 (Corner of Staples and Kostoryz Road) or Call Career Counselor, Naomi Vasquez Freeze at (361) 790-3189 for more information. Students who have been displaced and were affected by Hurricane Harvey are encouraged to visit their local Workforce Solutions office to determine eligibility and approval for financial assistance.

Del Mar College – Rebuild Texas Carpentry Skills Training Texas continues to experience a growing demand for workers in the construction industry as we work to rebuild our communities and employ a construction trade’s workforce after the disaster of Hurricane Harvey. The Texas population continues to grow rapidly and Del Mar College (DMC) is committed to providing skills training in carpentry to help students move towards employment into the workforce in industries seeking qualified Carpenters in the Coastal Bend area. Del Mar College is in the business of training students for sustainable careers. The DMC Summer 2019 Rebuild Texas Carpentry Skills Training for Cohort #2 and #3 will begin Monday, July 29, 2019 kicking off with the foundation for Safety. The OSHT 1015 – Safety and Accident Prevention course is a pre-requisite to the Carpentry Skills Training funded by the Rebuild Texas Fund to ensure students understand the importance of safety on construction projects and job sites. Upon completion of the OSHA 30 Hour Construction Course, students will be offered to test for an OSHA 30-Hour Construction Certification making for an excellent resume builder. Students will transition into DFTG 1015 Introduction to Blueprint Reading course to understand how a set of blueprint drawings are put together. Starting at the very beginning, learning about drawing types, scale and the interrelationships between drawings and how project information is conveyed throughout a set of construction documents. Students will take two additional courses; CNBT 1018 Construction Tools and Techniques ending the training with CRPT 1000 in Framing and General Construction. UPON COMPLETION OF THE 10-WEEK REBUILD TEXAS CARPENTRY SKILLS TRAINING, STUDENTS MAY BE REFERRED TO CONTRACTORS AND BUILDERS FOR HIRE.

OSHT 1015 - Safety and Accident Prevention - TUITION FREE Location for training is in Rockport and Ingleside, TX

OSHT 1015 is a pre-requisite to the Rebuild Texas Carpentry Skills Training. Students who have a current OSHA 30-Hour Certification may be exempted from OSHT 1015. The course provides a comprehensive safety program designed for students involved in the construction industry. Students will recognize and evaluate hazards in the workplace and implement control measures including engineering, administrative, and personal protective equipment (PPE).

Students will address the common occupational hazards; describe the components of effective workplace design and accident prevention programs; and demonstrate correct selection and safe use of PPE. Upon completion of OSHT 1015, students will be offered to test for an OSHA 30-Hour Construction Certification.

DFTG 1015 – Introduction to Blueprint Reading – TUITION FREE Introduction to Blueprint Reading is an introductory blueprint reading for residential and light

commercial construction. The course provides students with scale prints using architectural and

engineering scales, identifying construction blueprint symbols and abbreviations; interpreting a set of

construction contract documents, and correlating elevations, sections, details, plan views, schedules

and general notes. This is a pass or fail course. Course grades are based on student scores on the

Module Exams and whether the Performance Tests are satisfactorily completed.

CNBT 1018 – Construction Tools and Techniques - TUITION FREE Construction Tools and Techniques provide and introduction to the carpentry trade including safety,

tools, equipment, terminology, and methods. Students will learn to establish safe work practices;

describe fasteners and adhesives; define terms associated with building materials utilized by

carpenters; describe handling and storage procedures; demonstrate the use and care of tools and

equipment; and perform mathematical computations used by the Carpenter. Course grades are based

on student scores on the Module Exams and whether the Performance Tests are satisfactorily

completed.

CRPT 1000 - Framing and General Construction - TUITION FREE Framing and General Construction provides students with the knowledge and skills required to erect

wood frame structures with emphasis on layout and construction of floors, walls, and roofs. Training

includes safety procedures for using hand and power tools and structural materials. Students will learn

the carpentry maintenance common to any construction. Includes drywall repair; caulking, sealing, and

weather-stripping; replacement of hinges and lock sets; glazing; and on-the-job safety with hand and

power tools. Students will understand how to list, layout and construct components of wood frame

structures, select, use, and maintain tools and equipment; and practice construction safety. Students

will demonstrate safe-work habits learning how to maintain tools and equipment; identify basic material

used to repair framed structures, windows, and doors. Course grades are based on student scores on

the Module Exams and whether the Performance Tests are satisfactorily completed.

This program is available to trainees, age 18 or above as well as displaced workers from Hurricane Harvey.

Schedule The program prepares students for immediate work into the construction and trades industry as an entry-level carpenter. The schedule begins with an OSHA Safety and Accident Prevention Course and the option to test for the OSHA 30-Hour Construction Certification. Students seeking to register for coursework, will do so by visiting the Center for Economic Development located at the corner of Staples and Kostoryz Road. Attendance To ensure compliance with program standards, your attendance is crucial. STUDENTS MAY NOT MISS ANY DAYS OF CLASS PER COURSE OFFERING. ANY DAYS MISSED MUST BE APPROVED BY THE INSTRUCTORS AND WORKFORCE SOLUTIONS. ATTENDANCE GUIDELINES WILL BE COVERED IN THE SYLLABUS YOU WILL BE ISSUED.

Students who wish to withdraw from the program MUST do so by the 3rd class day (census date) . See the course schedule in the previous pages to determine the census date for dropping courses.

Grading STUDENTS MUST PASS A FINAL EXAM FOR COURSEWORK AND MEET ATTENDANCE REQUIREMENTS IN ORDER TO RECEIVE CERTIFICATION. SEE COURSE SYLLABUS FOR MORE INFORMATION.

Program Outcomes Students will receive a Continuing Education, Certificate of Completion for each course completed upon full participation of the course.

Breaks Breaks will be provided throughout the day. Please be mindful of break times and return times from each break as indicated by your instructor. Excessive breaks without instructor consent will count against your attendance.

Cell Phone Use NO cellphone use is permitted during class time. You may use your phone before class after class or during breaks. Failure to comply will result in phones being collected at the beginning of class each day. Specific cell phone guidelines will be covered in the syllabus.

Smoking Policy Del Mar College prohibits the use of tobacco, E-cigarettes, vaping pens and any other related products and devices by any employee, student, or visitor on all premises owned, rented, leased, or supervised by the College District, including all College District facilities, buildings, and grounds.
