ALTONAThe Town of Altona in western DeKalb

County was founded in 1865, predating Garrett by 10 years. Altona was not incorpo-rated as a town until June 1906.

Its roots go back to a sawmill and lumber business and the building of the railroad. It was named for a town in Germany that many of its early residents once called home.

Recent repairs and improvements to the Town Hall, constructed from a residence in the building that formerly served as the Altona Fire Department, include new doors and windows, insulation and removal of barn doors at the back of the building that once allowed access to fire protection vehicles.

Last summer, an abandoned home was demolished under the town’s recently adopted unsafe building ordinance.

GOVERNMENT: Beth McMaken is the town’s clerk-treasurer. The three-member town board includes President Chris Seely and members Vicki Brumbaugh and Dellas Burns. An election is held every four years for all officials, with the next slated for June 2016. The board meets the first Monday of the month at 6 p.m. at the Town Hall, 1312 W. Quincy St.

EDUCATION: Altona residents attend

Garrett-Keyser-Butler schools including Garrett High School, Garrett Middle School and J.E. Ober Elementary School on East Houston Street.

RECREATION: Mary Comesky Park is just east of the Town Hall on West Quincy Street. Improvement plans include addition of a teeter-totter, spring-mounted horses and handicap-accessible sandbox toys.

UTILITIES: Altona residents have their own water wells. Garrett Municipal Utilities distributes power generated by American Electric Power Co., and Northern Indiana Public Service Co. supplies natural gas. Sewer services are provided by the City of Garrett. The telephone company is Frontier.

POLICE: The DeKalb County Sheriff’s Department, Indiana State Police and Indiana Conservation Officers provide police protection.

FIRE: The Garrett Fire Protection Territory is contracted to provide fire protection on an annual basis for the Town of Altona.

POST OFFICE: Although once having the first post office, Altona residents now are served by the Garrett Post Office at 115 W. Keyser St. and have Garrett addresses and zip code of 46738. The original post office, housed in a general store at the corner of West Quincy and Baker streets, was discon-

tinued in 1911.LIBRARY: Altona residents are served by

the Garrett Public Library on the corner of Houston and Randolph streets, along with Garrett residents, and Keyser and Butler townships including Altona.

POPULATION: The U.S. Census Bureau in 2014 estimated 197 residents. The town is bounded by C.R. 7 on the west, Union Street on the east, and West King Street to the south. The northern boundary includes some homes on the north side of the CSX Railroad tracks. The town limits encompass some 70 homes and three small businesses. The town’s assessed evaluation is $3.1 million.

COMMUNITIES

ASHLEYFounded in 1892, Ashley straddles the

DeKalb-Steuben County line. The northern third of the town is in Steuben County and the southern two-thirds in DeKalb County. The center line of S.R. 4 (State Street) is the county line.

The town is known for its “smiley face” water tower that greets travelers on Interstate 69. The highway is a key to the town’s economic development, boosted by industrial and distribution operations along the road at the town’s eastern edge.

In the newest addition to the town’s business community, RES Polyflow has chosen Ashley for the site of its first plant on an 80-acre site. The company will convert scrap plastic into ultra-low sulfur diesel and gasoline blendstocks for the petroleum market. It expects to create up to 136 new jobs by 2019, with hiring set to begin this summer.

GOVERNMENT: A three-member town council meets on the second Monday of each month. Council members are Randy McEntarfer, Mike Hasselman and Robert “Bob” Thompson. The clerk-treasurer is Karen McEntarfer, 587-9276. Randy McEntarfer is the town planner, 587-3982. The official town website is ashley.in.gov.

EDUCATION: Country Meadow Elemen-tary School is two miles south of town at C.R. 10 and C.R. 23, serving students from Ashley, Fairfield and Smithfield townships and a portion of Richland Township. The school’s phone numbers are 920-1017 and 587-3371. The entire town is part of DeKalb Central United School District, and junior and senior high school students attend DeKalb Middle School and DeKalb High School, between Auburn and Waterloo.

RECREATION: Ashley has four parks totaling 20 acres. Ashley Memorial Park is on South Union Street under the “smiley” water tower. Sunset Park consists of 12 acres at the west end of Ruby and Pearl

COMMUNITIESstreets. Carpenter Field is on Ashley’s north side on North Grand Avenue. A children’s playground is outside the Ashley Community Center on South Gonser Avenue. The parks include three baseball diamonds, three basketball courts, a tennis court, a half-mile walking trail, three shelter houses and several play areas. Jim Bush is the parks superintendent.

HEALTH: Cameron Hospital in Angola and DeKalb Health hospital in Auburn both are approximately 15 minutes away.

UTILITIES: Residents use the town’s water and sewage systems. Northern Indiana Public Service Co. provides electricity and natural gas.

AUBURNSeveral major projects are underway in

Auburn for 2016.Auburn is working on eliminating the

overflow of untreated wastewater into Cedar Creek by constructing new sewer lines in the city. A major phase of the project is ongoing on the city’s southwest side and is scheduled to be finished this summer.

Changes to McKenney-Harrison Elemen-tary School are in progress with the demoli-tion of the old Harrison building, which dates back to 1930. Construction of a new Harrison section along Indiana Avenue that will house classrooms and the administration office is scheduled to begin in spring.

Students will occupy the new Harrison building in late 2016 or early 2017, and demolition of the existing McKenney building will take place in early or mid-2017. Renova-tions to existing facilities, including the gym, art and music rooms and media center, will take place during summers and should be complete by the end of 2017, according to a project schedule.

GOVERNMENT: Auburn has a mayor and seven-member common council. Two at-large council members and five district members serve four-year terms.

City officials are Mayor Yoder, Clerk-Treasurer Patricia Miller, and council members Kevin Webb, Todd Sanderson, Matthew Kruse, Mike Watson, Mike Walter, Jim Finchum and Dennis Ketzenberger.

High School and DeKalb Middle School north of the city, with two elementary schools (McKenney-Harrison and J.R. Watson) in Auburn. All are part of the DeKalb Central United School District.

RECREATION: Facilities in Auburn include the YMCA of DeKalb County, the Skatin’ Station, Auburn Bowl, Bridgewater Golf Club, NCG Cinemas and the Auburn-Garrett Drive-in on S.R. 8 west of Garrett.

Eckhart Park and Rieke Park are Auburn’s major parks, along with Thomas Park, Memorial Park, Smith Acres Park, Don Lash Park and smaller neighborhood parks. The Auburn Community Pool, which has a water slide and diving board, is in Eckhart Park.

The Auburn Outdoor Theater presents entertainment events during summer months, including many performances with free admission. It lies along the east bank of Cedar Creek, across the creek from the DeKalb County Fairgrounds, with an entrance off Center Street near Fifteenth Street.

The Heimach Center, on East Seventh Street, serves as a meeting place for senior

citizens.The DeKalb County Free Fall Fair takes

place at the end of September, with 4-H events at the DeKalb County Fairgrounds and rides, food and games on downtown Auburn streets.

Three museums salute the city’s automo-tive heritage: The Auburn Cord Duesenberg Automobile Museum and National Automo-tive and Truck Museum of the United States, both on Wayne Street, occupy buildings of the former Auburn Automobile Co. The Kruse Automotive Museum at C.R. 11-A and I-69 is housed inside the National Military History Center.

The Auburn Cord Duesenberg Festival, celebrating the city’s automotive history, takes place each Labor Day weekend.

HEALTH: DeKalb Health hospital is on 7th Street (S.R. 8) in east Auburn, serving Auburn and all of the surrounding area. DeKalb EMS provides ambulance service.

UTILITIES: Water and sewer services are maintained by the city. The wastewater treatment plant is at 2002 S. Wayne St. The city-owned Auburn Electric utility distributes power generated by American Electric Power Co. Natural gas is supplied by the Northern Indiana Public Service Co. AT&T, Mediacom and city-owned Auburn Essential

truck will be the first fire truck featuring an aerial device to be placed in service in Butler.

The Butler Police Department will relocate to the former City Hall building at 120 W. Main St. later this year after that building undergoes a renovation project. Police used the 1963 building for many years, but shared it with the fire department, street department, utility office and city court. When the police department moves back to the building, it will be sole occupant.

POLICE: Chief Jim Nichols leads a department of six full-time officers and seven reserves. Call 911 for emergencies or 868-2171 for nonemergency business.

FIRE: Chief Jeff Shultz leads an all-volun-teer fire department of 24 firefighters. The fire department provides fire protection to the city of Butler, as well as Wilmington, Franklin, Stafford and Troy townships. Call 911 for emergencies or 868-2044 for nonemergency business.

LIBRARY: The Butler Public Library is at 340 S. Broadway. The director is Ellen Stuckey. The library offers a variety of programs for children, teens and adults. There are several public-use computers for Internet access. The library’s website is

butlerpubliclibrary.net.EDUCATION: The DeKalb County Eastern

Community School District serves children from Butler, St. Joe and Spencerville, plus Concord, Newville, Spencer, Stafford, Troy and Wilmington townships. Butler and Riverdale (St. Joe and Spencerville) high schools consolidated in 1963, creating Eastside Junior-Senior High School. Elemen-tary students attend Butler Elementary School, 1025 S. Broadway. The high school is at 603 E. Green St. Administrative offices are at 300 E. Washington St.

RECREATION: Programs for baseball, softball and football are offered in the summer and fall. Maxton Park and South Side Park feature large playgrounds and picnic areas. Neighborhood parks include Mason Park and Hathaway Park. The Filling Station Youth Center, 315 S. Federal St., offers social and spiritual activities. Butler Days takes place in August.

HEALTH CARE: The DeKalb Health Medical Group/Butler, 409 E. Washington St., is a satellite clinic for DeKalb Health hospital. Dr. Mark S. O’Brien, MD, MS, is the full-time staff physician. The Laurels of DeKalb Health Care Center serves the community. Kenneth Arnt, DDS, provides dental care in Butler.

ACCESS: U.S. 6 (Main Street) and S.R. 1 (Broadway).

UTILITIES: City utilities include water and sewer service. Ted Miller is superin-tendent for the street, water and sanitation departments. The utility office is at 215 S. Broadway, 868-5881. Indiana Michigan Power provides electricity, and Northern Indiana Public Service Co. provides natural gas.

GOVERNMENT: Ron Walter is the mayor. City Council members are Ron Baker, Tammy Davis, Jerry Eldridge, Eric Johnson and Larry Moore. Angela Eck is clerk-treasurer, Steve Bingham is city planner, and Richard Obendorf is city court judge. The Board of Public Works and Safety meets the first and third Mondays each month at 7 p.m. The City Council meets the same days at 7:30 p.m. or immediately after the Board of Works meeting. BUTLERThis spring, the Butler Fire Department

will receive a quintuple combination fire truck that features a 78-foot aerial ladder.

The fire truck, being manufactured by Rosenbauer America of Wyoming, Minnesota, will have the traditional pump, water tank, ground ladders and hose. The

northwest DeKalb County, Corunna became a town in 1902. It was a stop for trains on the


COMMUNITIESNew York Central railroad and, according to history books, boasted three schools, a bank, two mills, and a hotel in 1914.

Now, the town is home to a thriving business, Albright’s SuperMarket at the corner of U.S. 6 and S.R. 327.

FIRE DEPARTMENT: The town’s volunteer fire department is known not only for the emergency services it provides to the community but also for its popular fundraising fish fry meals that are served every other Friday evening at the fire station on the north side of U.S. 6.

POST OFFICE: The town has a post office on S.R. 327.

GOVERNMENT: Corunna is governed by a town council consisting of three members: Democrat Jay Christian and Republicans Lori Hyde and Steve Faulkner. The town provides municipal water and sanitary sewer services.

POLICE: Police protection is provided by the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Department. Call 911 for emergencies and 925-3365 for nonemergency business.

EDUCATION: Students attend DeKalb Central elementary schools, DeKalb Middle School and DeKalb High School, south of Waterloo.

POPULATION: The U.S. Census Bureau estimated that population at 254 in 2014.

GARRETT A project to renovate and repair the

100-year-old City Hall in downtown Garrett began in October. The city sold a $3 million bond issue for the project earlier in 2015.

Work includes roof replacement and parapet repairs, masonry restoration, window replacement and plaster wall repair, basement exterior wall repairs and underslab drain installation, including structural repairs to the main stair landing, attic structural repairs, replacement of wiring in the attic to meet code compliance and an automatic fire alarms with smoke detection in the attic.

Also included are north wall exterior insulation, replacement of exterior doors and overhead doors, main stair landing repair and replacement of the stair terrazzo and wainscoting and masonry restoration.

Hamilton Hunter Builders Inc. of Fort Wayne was hired for the lowest bid at $1,205,327 with $159,085 in additional repairs, totaling $1,364,412.

Scott Carnegie from DLZ Indiana antici-pated construction costs at $2.3 million to $2.5 million plus contingency costs at $370,000-$400,000.

Substantial completion is expected by August without the winter conditions contin-gency plan.

GOVERNMENT: Todd Fiandt is the city’s mayor. Common Council members are Bradley Stump, Todd Sattison, Amanda Charles, Tom Kleeman and Dave Demske. The clerk-treasurer is Marcie Conkle, with Milton Otero as city planner and Dan Brinkerhoff as city attorney.

EDUCATION: Garrett-Keyser-Butler School Corp. includes Garrett High School, Garrett Middle School and J.E. Ober Elemen-tary School on East Houston Street. Matt Smith is the high school principal, and Lucas Fielden is the middle school principal. Kristi

Surfus is the elementary school principal. School board members are Terry Yarde, president; Wayne Funk, vice president; Dan Weimer, secretary; and Larry Getts and Phil Lemper, members. The school superinten-dent is Dennis Stockdale.

St. Joseph Catholic School at 301 W. Houston St. offers elementary education through sixth grade. The principal is Kristine Call.

water slide and several ball diamonds and basketball courts. The city has three neighborhood parks: East Side Park on East King Street, West Side Park on Ijams Street and Union Street Park. Ocker Park’s 20-acre site on the city’s north side on West Railroad Street features a stocked pond for fishing and picnic area and pavilion. A sledding hill was added on the north side of the park during 2013. Heritage Park with a railroading museum is off Randolph Street on the north side of the railroad.

POLICE: Chief Keith Hefner oversees 14 full-time officers, including one full-time and one part-time investigator. The depart-ment also has one full-time administrative assistant, one active part-time officer and four reserve officers.The Garrett Police Department also has one canine officer. Dispatching is handled by DeKalb County Central Communications. The Garrett Police Station is at 200 N. Cowen St.

FIRE: The Garrett Fire Department

operates out of a six-bay station at 200 N. Cowen St. Fire Chief Chad Werkheiser and 30 volunteer firefighters provide fire protec-tion for area residents and businesses. David Mix serves as the department’s chaplain.

HEALTH CARE: Miller’s Merry Manor nursing home is on S.R. 327 (South Randolph Street) and is the base for the Garrett unit of DeKalb EMS. DeKalb Health Hospital operates a medical clinic in downtown Garrett. Garrett has two dentists, an optome-trist and a chiropractor. Garrett is home to St. Martin’s Healthcare Clinic, 1359 S. Randolph St., which provides health care for uninsured residents of DeKalb County.

POST OFFICE: 115 W. Keyser St.LIBRARY: Garrett Public Library, on the

corner of Houston and Randolph streets, serves Garrett, as well as Keyser and Butler townships. The building is handicap-acces-sible. A new, 6,500 square-foot, two story addition provides children and youth areas, two meeting rooms for adults and a second elevator and a new entry on the south side of the building. The library opened April 24, 1915.

Calling itself “the playground of northeast Indiana,” Hamilton lies on the border of Steuben and DeKalb counties and is known for its scenic lakes.

The town lies alongside Hamilton Lake, which covers about 800 acres. Downtown Hamilton rises above the south shore of the lake, offering restaurants, merchants and professional services.

The town’s population increases in the summer months due to the appeal of the lake and wildlife.

GOVERNMENT: The Hamilton Town Council meets on the first Monday of each month at 7 p.m. Town Council members are president Jenni Heisler, vice president Mary Vail, Bob Howard, Sandra Biegas and Steve Blum. Hester Stouder is the clerk-treasurer. Brent Shull is the town manager. The town website is hamiltonindiana.org.

EDUCATION: Students attend Hamilton Community Schools at the south edge of town on S.R. 427.

RECREATION: Boating, fishing and water skiing on Hamilton Lake, which borders the town, are favorite pastimes. The two-mile Fish Creek Trail links Hamilton’s Girt L. Gnagy Park to Ball Lake. The Hamilton Park Board manages Gnagy Park, Fish Creek Trail and the public beach and offers a variety of recreational activities, programs and special events throughout the year.

HEALTH: Physician Teresa Smith has an office at 2500 E. Bellefountaine Road. The phone number is 488-2211. Hospitals and other health services are available at Angola and Auburn.

UTILITIES: Allied Waste of Bryan, Ohio, handles refuse collection. The Town of Hamilton operates its own water plant, with Justin Stouder as superintendent and Brad Haskins as assistant superintendent. COMMUNITIESSPENCERVILLE

Spencerville is known for its historic, wooden covered bridge, built in 1873. It crosses the St. Joseph River at the east edge of town. The bridge has been rebuilt and renovated several times, with the most recent renovation completed in 2013. The bridge is used by vehicles, horsedrawn buggies and pedestrians.

Each year, the bridge is the focal point for the “Supper on the Bridge” event. The event typically takes place in August each year with two meals offered. The community also holds a Thanksgiving dinner each November at the Spencerville Community Building.

GOVERNMENT: Spencerville is an unincorporated town. The Spencer Township trustee is Cheri Bushee, 238-4243.

ST. JOEThe community of St. Joe borders the St.

Joseph River in southeastern DeKalb County.St. Joe town officials have acquired the

former Knisely National Bank building for use as a new town hall, according to Town Board President Dave Burns.

Town officials are considering possibly hiring a town marshal to provide law enforcement protection for residents.

St. Joe’s website proclaims, “A great place to live and visit.” Roadside signs entering the community welcome visitors with the message, “We pull together with

community pride.”St. Joe is known for its annual Pickle

Festival that celebrates the famous products of Sechler’s Pickles, made just north of town. The Pickle Festival will celebrate its 20th anniversary this July. The festival attracts visitors from around the country.

GOVERNMENT: The Town Board is comprised of president David Burns and members Tom Moody and Jeff Studebaker. Allison McKean is clerk-treasurer. Beginning in March, board meetings will be at 7 p.m. the first Monday of each month at the current Town Hall, 102 3rd St. The Concord Township trustee is Stacey Crowl, 450-3764.

EDUCATION: Riverdale Elementary School at 6127 S.R. 1 is part of the DeKalb County Eastern Community School District. Students in grades 7-12 attend Eastside Junior-Senior High School in Butler.

RECREATION: Residents can enjoy Wild Cherry Park on C.R. 59, the St. Joe Valley Conservation Club on C.R. 60 and the St. Mark Memorial Park on Washington Street. Another attraction is the St. Joseph River Greenway. It follows the river’s west bank for one mile, starting behind Riverdale Elemen-tary School.

WATERLOOWaterloo lies along three major

transportation corridors — the east-west highway U.S. 6 that runs through the town, the north-south Interstate 69 at the town’s western edge and the east-west Norfolk Southern railway line.

A project to move the historic Waterloo Depot to the southeast corner of Van Vleek and Center streets is in the works in 2016. The depot will become a station for passen-gers traveling on Amtrak trains that stop in Waterloo. Amtrak uses the Norfolk Southern rail lines for two trains that each stop twice

daily on routes from Chicago to the East Coast.

GOVERNMENT: The Waterloo Town Council meets on the second Tuesday of each month at Waterloo Grant Township Public Library and has five members: President David Bolton, Alex McConnehey, William Hubartt, Dorsey Brown and Jess Jessup. DeKalb County is governed by three commissioners — Donald Grogg, Randy Deetz and Jacqueline Rowan. DeKalb County has a seven-member
